I've had to use the RTP for so long because I don't feel right using rips and neither me nor my partner can do pixel work.

If you want oohs and aahs make a custom tileset or edit and put in lighting effects. Custom artwork is a semi-close second, and custom music and programming are tertiary winners, but I think pixel work in a community that is based on nostalgia is huge and will always be the easiest thing to judge at a glance (which is paramount when there is so much information constantly in our face.)

Remember, you're marketing this game to people; when you see a really neat title screen on the front page I bet you're curious to check it. If you see an RTP one do you even give it a second thought? What about when that title screen is just hiding RTP-looking gameplay? Now what about the screenshots section; how many RTP-looking ones do you check there? (Don't answer, these are questions meant to spark honest introspection.)

It's a problem I've been mulling over for years since I do this only as a hobby, and trust me when I say that the RTP is a difficult hurdle to climb (not impossible.)

You still need a solid game behind it however, don't mistake that.
