2014 Indie Game Development Contest: $10,000 Grand Prize!

Nice that it's not limited to RM.

Got an idea and getting started.

Win $50k - Unity + Windows Store contest

If only it wasn't Windows phone, haha.

Dimensions of 2 or 3?

I wanted to thank everyone for the input on this! It's been really helpful and we've been asking around through a few different avenues.

Our current plan is to take this commercial in 3D - before we get too far we'll be doing a small demo with a completed environment and some rough combat. If that looks as good as we hope we'll probably continue on the 3D path, otherwise we might switch to 2D if it doesn't look possible or too hard to maintain.

@BurningTyger: If Krisanna took on a normal job her rate of finishing either 2D or 3D artwork would REALLY slow down - to the point that it'd be half a year before we likely even had a working demo.

Dimensions of 2 or 3?

Thanks for the responses so far!

To clarify a few things:
1. We will continue to use the face sets and 2D ART assets:

It's just the spriting that Krisanna isn't good with - we'll still use a lot of 2D artwork and faces for the expressions.

The monster design will remain the same designs, just in 3D:
Cello
Flute

2. 3D IS more work, but not too much more - I'd say probably double or a bit more than 2D? But you gain a lot of advantages from that (expressive movement like jumping, or reeling back in shock, etc.)

@Solitayre: It's not a do or die kind of making money, it's to help pay some extra bills faster and get some money stored up for buying a house. We won't starve if it doesn't sell well (or at all) or anything. : )

An RM Venture

If only this has been during this week and not the previous. : (

Yes.

Outlaw City Review

Yay! A review for our first game ever finally! : )
(Did you know this game is older than RMN itself?)

It's more positive than I thought, I can agree with a lot of your issues there, I love the ideas and combat behind this one but the characters do across really stale.

One thing I learned is that when I started writing (still something I'm learning the basic amateur level stuff about) the characters had more personality in my head, and it never really comes across in the dialogue and and scenes.

Sorry for some of the issues you had while playing this and glad some of it was interesting at least!

The Screenshot Topic Returns

I like seeing all the different styles people are posting now! Is there a name for that hard-pixel style like that and Sworcery?

Female template successfully used! Long hair and a short skirt are working fine.

@LockeZ: We used full-size before, but the effort wasn't really worth it, especially since animations needed to look more realistic too. So we modeled it after the sprites from the game and stylized it a bit to an approach that remains easy to use but high quality looking (hopefully!)

Since the art style is heavily anime-ish, makes sense to go with models that suite the same style. Gotta play off your strengths!

Her eyes are so massive and her feet are so tiny.

I really like the outfit though.
That's a he! @Anaryu when/where are you posting about these exciting new developments?

We haven't posted much except those images on our blog.

A few 'inside' updates I still have URLs for though:
http://screencast.com/t/tPucP3CS
http://screencast.com/t/qIlECm0ly1v

and I've been finishing some tools for the 'tile' style editor we're using:
http://screencast.com/t/DSJ4hLrQSPu
http://screencast.com/t/bKP5uEKa4

Those were from about a week ago, lot of progress since then. : )

In particular I've got an event system very akin to an RM one working now, just finished parallel handling (so any 'event' can run it's own interpreter instead of going through the main one.)

Next is the culling and handling of switching floors so that you only see your floor and down and only see inside when you're inside a building. Once that's automated I'll start on the combat system.

Alaria's one is almost done, takes a bit over a day to 1.5 days to finish one of these guys (minus animations) now that we've got the base done and rigged (female and male base):

just finishing the hair and then seeing about using soft bodies to move her tie and hair.

We were going to wait until we had a working tech demo before posting the new project and maybe taking it a bit further!
