Casting Call! Part 2 of 3: Flynn

Gotta wonder how those rings stay on the open side of the staff... /pointless injection of logic

He's a wind mage, he does that just to look cool.

(Also, we were betting whether someone would mention that or not, congrats on making me LOSE THE BET!)

Updooken!

I like to keep a record of my stuff as I got along to see how much I've progressed:

A new version of the ring, with most of the flaws fixed:

Once again, I'm looking forward to your criticism as to what to improve next :).

My only complaints are:
1. Door on the left, maybe use something other than a strong black for the outline?
2. The fuzziness on the curved parts of the colored ring ropes

But they're minor compared to the original.

The main reason I'm not continuing is that I'll be working 5 of the remaining 7 days (overtime shifts). No chance in hell I can finish it with just 2 days.

Like I said, shorter contests are better suited to me. Especially during summer when my schedule is more unpredictable.

Couldn't you just make a 2 week game during the month?

A tip to those who haven't started yet: make non-RPGs. But yes, there's still time.

Darn! I really wanted to make an RPG this time (been doing way too much non-RPG stuff lately) so we're on the RPG boat!

Barely on schedule, but there. We should put a game page up, but I want to get some more screenshots of the surreal aspect first (and a titlescreen.)

We should have something done by the end.

Weird Dreams

Fixing and re-submitting is certainly not only allowed, but I'd say encouraged. Getting done early allows you to spend time on precious beta testing and revisions - that's an advantage you'll have over most that I'd use as much as you can.

Fire Woman

The contest required people be able to play it without extra stuff installed, right?

I just downloaded and tried to run the .exe and it won't run - is there any way to make a 2K/3 game stand-alone? (I do not have the 2K/3 editor installed on this computer.)

I think the judges would have the 2K/3 materials so maybe it's moot, but I was hoping to be able to play the 2K/3 entries this time around. : P

Fire Woman

Sadly I'm already on a team - if ideas are the tough part, you might find some by just relaxing and playing some other games (either on RMN or Flash portals, calunio posted some he likes in terms of surrealism in the Summer Contest thread.)

Obviously don't steal ideas out-right, but getting inspiration or sparking new ideas from playing games is something I'm pretty sure nearly every developer does.

Play favorites, play games people all hate, and play ones that interest you - the extremes are a bit more informative.

Also, get others to play your game (join IRC and ask if anyone is willing to give feedback, or get it posted and post a blog asking for it) - games are like any other medium, the first version is always rough, that's not a weakness or a sign of a bad developer. Improving it and polishing with feedback from others, however, is the sign of a GOOD developer!
