BD_DESIGN'S PROFILE

Just another ex-gaming industry hopeful, going to school and learning as much as I can. I don't think making a game will directly affect my chances of getting a job, but it will teach me the process as well as organization, something I sorely lack. I'm no longer working for Zynga, which is too bad.

What else? I like Japanese food and cinema (but I'm not an otaku), CRPGs (of course), electronic music (90's Industrial FTW), Belgian ales, meat cooked over fire, 420, CGI, 3D animation, cats, SNES, subversive or black comedy, dystopian sci-fi, and any epic fantasy brave enough to step out of the Tolkien shadow.

My dislikes include all forms of bigotry, country music, fast food, factory farms, multinational corporations, warfare, social networking, romantic comedies (in general), and politics.

Howard the Duck

Reveal your secrets: where did you get your ideas?

I get my ideas from real life:

Sunburn status condition

post=145587
It'll be a whole party cure item rather than a single party member (which is what i wanted initially) and it'll be more complicated if it were to remove sunburn on only a single party member.

That sounds a bit more realistic, since one person doesn't need a whole bottle of suntan lotion (unless you allow multiple uses).

Hope he's wearing his sunscreen!

Treating heat with sunscreen... asbestos underwear might work better.

What are you working on now?

A couple of things are in the works for my new project. When not hammering out my design document, I've been fiddling with height maps for what will eventually become panoramas. Now that school's out for two weeks, I'm also going to read as many .pdfs as I can about Ruby and game design in general.

I gotta ditch that 2K3 sprite.

How do you purchase VX?

At least those crooks aren't involved anymore. They charged me six times for one license of XP and never answered their phone / e-mail. By the time it was finally resolved, VX was out. :(

How to make good puzzles

It all depends on what you want to do, or what the purpose is. You could have all sorts of boxes with different properties:

• Moves one space
• Slides until it hits an obstacle
• Has handles / can be pulled
• Falls down a hole to floor below
• Moves in one direction only
• Can be destroyed
• Explodes one space in all directions (3x3)
• Redirects a beam / completes a circuit
• Forms a bridge / opens a path to allow advancement (you could also combine this with a two-party system)

Of course, the real challenge lies in conveying the relevance of said puzzle. If there's no logical reason for the puzzle to be there, you may want to rethink including it.

Using Panoramas as Backgrounds in XP - Scrolling Problem (and a tilemap program you may find useful)

This is great.
