Gaming and game design are my hobbies. I've spent the most time with VX Ace and 2k3 (prior to Steam release), but the only thing I've ever finished anything with is 2k.

Psychology was my first degree, but being responsible for depressed kids was too stressful. So I got a Masters in Healthcare Management and now I'm responsible for depressed adults!

Is it worth upgrading to Windows 10?

My brother just upgraded from Windows 7 to 10, and so far it's working fine. It boots faster, and the new web browser that replaces Internet Explorer rivals Chrome in terms of speed and appearance. I'm probably going to switch from 8.1 to 10 today or tomorrow and see how it works on my laptop compared to my brother's super computer.

[RMVX ACE] Good sites for tilesets? Is DS pack good with RTP style sprites?

The DS+ Resource Pack also includes a character generator, although it isn't as easy to use as the default VX Ace one.

And add Last Quest IV to the completed list.

The battles in this are actually pretty well balanced. The skillsets for the heroes are pretty well built and each skill has it's uses. There was a cheese skill, though - the MP healing one. Outside of battle you just fill up mage girl with MP using the skill, restore everyone else's MP then restore her own again. Made it so that you didn't have to use Mana Leaves except in battle. That might be by design, though, since Mana Leaves only fill up 20 MP (about the same amount as the skill).

Story-wise I enjoyed it. It was simple but good for what it was with a few tongue-in-cheek parts. I quite liked it all up. The only real issues I can pick on is that dungeons seemed really short, and the ending felt cheap (though I did smirk at it).

There was a bug that I found - talking to Mayor Dad again will net you another five potions. Being the cheap person that I am, I filled up on free potions, then sold them off so I wouldn't have to grind for money. Because I could. ;p

Overall, I thought it was a pretty good little game. Kudos!

I'm glad it went over well. I wasn't sure how it would do since the story did get a little weird towards the end. As for the MP skill, it resulted from some Play Tests where I tested out the game at under-leveled and over-leveled levels, and somebody playing under-leveled would effectively be wiped out by bosses once their MP ran out. I had considered making it user-only, but it wasn't the mage who kept running out of MP.

The ending was kind of a cop-out since I wanted to add more to the game, but ran out of time due to other commitments and simply because the time I had spent on just the 30 minutes game indicated that I wouldn't have time to go a full hour. I figured a joke ending was better than no ending.

As for the potions, I'll probably fix that at some point but they only sell for a couple gold so even maxing out on free potions wouldn't get your full party the best equipment in the game.

I'm really glad it did well, especially since it's the first fully playable RM game that I've actually finished.

BC, if you post a link to your game here people will probably still give it a go. Hell, I know you had your page up before the day was over and the time stamp on your download was before time end, so I'll count it. Just keep in mind for next time that submissions in events need to be added to the event page itself.

Wow, thanks! I missed that part up in the contest rules section (and partially because I never finished any previous contest submissions), but now I know for next time.

So if anybody wants to take a look at it, free of any major bugs thanks to previous feedback: Last Quest IV: The Prequeling

Map Weight in RPGs

The Mana Khemia branch of the Atelier series featured maps that incorporated platforming, and where you also collected resources from fishing spots, plants, mining rocks, etc. The resource gathering was as much a part of the game as the battles, since the entire premise of the game is alchemy.

Final Fantasy XII was a seamless flow of environments where the battles took place in semi-real-time as you traveled through massive landscapes. It was set up like an action/adventure game with RPG stats and formulas. If you disabled the "pause when selecting an action (Wait/Active)", it became real-time.

I usually put way more emphasis on the maps if I'm not racing against a deadline, since that's what people are going to see regardless of whether or not the game even features battles, and screenshots of maps are a bigger draw to a game than screenshots of a front-view battle system with menus.

How did the list get cut down to seven entries?

Oh, I see it now. We had to hit an additional submit button. Well I screwed myself on this one.

I found two bugs in the beginning of your game.
- The unmoving guard speaks in a neverending loop while the event with Major Dad.
It's difficult to leave the village.
- When re-entering the village the loop starts again and you can't enter your home.

Thanks for letting me know. I had inadvertently created the guard loop when adding extra dialog for some NPCs. I removed the guard's dialog, so he won't loop anything anymore.

The boss fight nearly freezes, but after waiting a moment, I could tipp again.

I didn't notice anything out of place in the eventing and I didn't experience the issue myself in another Play Test but I'll check it out.

Oh and finding the same equipment in chests that you can buy earlier in the village or the town isn't really helpful (except for money and the last two chests).

That's actually one of the cliches/tropes for the contest. Buying equipment just to find something equal to or better than in the next dungeon. I'll probably rebalance it after the contest is over.
