What are you thinking about? (game development edition)

The beauty of it being a fangame means it's not at all canon, so people shouldn't go into it expecting it to be 100% accurate or even what they want to see. If you feel it's well justified to do what it is you want to do and you're sure it fits in well in a realistic interpretation of the original story, I say to hell with it and just go for it. It'd be nice to see people making fangames where brave (but still realistic) steps are taken and things in the storyline actually - you know - change. Like a story, and like real, breathing characters.

There are so many games I've played/shows I've watched that have ended with certain cliffhangers or bits of information missing and it's driven me totally crazy. I'd hound the internet for weeks looking for comics/pictures/videos that tied off ends, even if it wasn't canon. If I was someone who's played the original game and you've offered some reprieve or given them the ending they were looking for, I'd certainly thank you a million times over. And if I disliked what you did to the characters, I'd reassure myself with the fact it's not the original story and move on to the next fangame.

With that said, there's nothing to stop you from making two separate fangames if you really couldn't decide. One where the person dies and events unfold as you'd like, and another where they live and the game takes an entirely different route.

NaGaDeMo Review Drive

Looks like there's already a review, but I'mma review Epic Elf as I'd planned to do so before the event! *continues playing*

Map Linking Help?

You can use a simple switch to stop this from happening over and over again.

So on the player touch event where the player walks over it and the squirrels run across, at the end of the page where the squirrels are done, go to "Switch Operations" or something to that effect and make a switch called "Squirrels." Turn it on. Then make a new page on the event and on the side, tick one of the boxes that says "switch" and select your "Squirrels" switch. This will stop the event from happening over and over again, as it will play whatever is on the second page from that point on (in this case, there is nothing on the page).

If you are using XP or VX, you can use a self switch which doesn't take up a regular switch slot. Just select self switch A to activate, and on the next page, tick the box that says self switch and select A from the dropdown box.

Oh balls, I didn't notice the hero was there.. my bad. Just uhh.. just ignore him.. maybe.. :P He was meant to be invisible. Just as well he wasn't, or I may never have noticed that issue.

Thanks for pointing that out, I will totally go do that now!

The Screenshot Topic Returns

@Jaydee - It's already been mentioned, so I won't tell you about the lighting. I'm digging that tileset, mind you! I dunno what to suggest for an abandoned house.. It really depends on the back story. Perhaps smashed bottles, broken windows.. a few creepy effects might be what you're going for?

@King of Games - I love those screenshots, especially the first one. Keep doing what you're doing, 'cause it's going super nicely!

Story line Maker Event

(Don't tell her but I totally stole the 'character/location descriptive piece' idea from CLOSAT. XD)

Story line Maker Event

Naw, I'm not sure I could handle the pressure of getting things posted at specific times currently, like results, etc. :P I'm happy to offer my suggestions on the competition, though!

Story line Maker Event

I think that it should link back to the original synopsis at all times, and you should get points for how well it links back to it. You could always introduce different characters in your next piece, but it should carry that same vibe and themes. And maybe more themes should be added as you go along.. you know, just to make it difficult and more interesting to read/judge.

Maybe if you got those 9 finalists to write something a bit bigger than a synopsis but less than a page.. Maybe a descriptive piece about a character or location in the story? Then that gets narrowed down further to 3 people who have to write the first page (maybe 600 words?) of the story? That way, the judges wouldn't have to read quite so much and it would still keep it interesting and fresh.

As an example:

Round 1:
Write a 200 word synopsis including these themes:
- Must use the word 'pantry'
- Must be about ninjas
- Must contain a secret cave
- Must not use the word 'like'
- Theme: daring adventure

Round 2:
The 9 finalists chosen must write a descriptive piece (200 words) on a character. The character:
- Must be called George/Georgia
- Must wear some kind of mask
- Must be over the age of 60

Round 3:
The 3 finalists from the past round must write a first page to the story (600 words). It:
- Must be based loosely around the beginning synopsis
- Must include your character from round 2
- Must end in a shark attack

Story line Maker Event

Yeah that'd be really cool, especially if a lot more people joined up! I think writing a 200 word synopsis is a lot less to ask, so I'm hoping more people will want to join in.

But what would happen to those 6-9 finalists after they're voted best in category? Would they have to write another synopsis under different requirement rules, or perhaps a first page to their story? Or maybe even something completely different?

Story line Maker Event

Maybe you lose 1 point for every 10 words you go over the limit or something. That'd really discourage people from going over the limit, and quite a bit can be said in 10 words.

If you judged entries in the same categories like with the Story Line competition:
- Romance
- Thriller/Suspense
- Comedy

Perhaps each entry is marked out of 5 on each. Then possibly there'll be a total of five theme requirements, for example:
- Must use the word 'pantry' (1 point)
- Must be about ninjas (1 point)
- Must contain a secret cave (1 point)
- Must not use the word 'like' (1 point)
- Theme: daring adventure (1 point)

So if you do all of those things, you get the full 5 points. If you only do 3, you get 3 points, etc.

The numbers may need fixing around, this is just off the top of my head as an example. :P But I doubt anyone would get the full marks, especially considering it'd have to be the most thrilling, romantic and hilarious 200 word synopsis ever written. XD
