Yeah, I was never overly fond of VX's RTP and the way it makes absolutely everything look so.. square. I've been trying to make my own tilesets as of recent which hopefully aren't quite so blocky. Still slightly blocky, but not so much.

Thanks Sana! ^^
There we go, updated the map to have much, much less clutter. I think in the case of these tiles, less is definitely more.

Thanks! I'm hoping to get enough decorative stuff made to get a decent, actually-in-game map done soon.

Oh, oops, sorry, I forgot to mention that this wasn't made to show off mapping, just the tiles themselves.. if this was to be mapped out properly, the path to the house would have a lot less clutter and there wouldn't be quite so many lampposts. :P Forgot to point that out in my rush to get this uploaded before sleep.
And yeah, I won't be using RTP VX sprites. I was planning on using a much taller sprite to fit the size of the tiles.
EDIT: Cleaned a bit of crap out of the way of the house front.

Having trouble kickstarting my plot...
Maybe you need to think of the reasons for why people steal things to begin with: greed, infamy and reputation/to show off, being forced to by another person, mind control, or even just because they can. Ever seen that movie 'Jumper'? It was terrible, but the guy had a magical power that let him jump to any place in the world that he could picture in his mind. Pretty much first thing he did was teleport to a bank and rob it. He didn't need the money, but he did it just because he could. I wouldn't say that this movie was good or worth copying ideas from, but it's just a good example of testing a new power out by doing something a little bit evil or mischievous. Like if you could turn invisible, you probably wouldn't test it by volunteering to help the police or something, you'd more than likely sneak into the bathroom of the opposite sex for a laugh.
Or perhaps this kid is arrogant about his prowess in the theft department and wants to show off in front of a big gang. Maybe he wants a feeling of community and those people are the only ones who would offer him a place to feel as if amongst friends. People fall in with the wrong people all the time, especially thieves/shoplifters.
Just think of a realistic reason for why you'd want to hang out with a person, regardless of whether they were a thief or otherwise. It's only then that you've befriended them that you realise the trouble you're in, and how you're going to continue to fit in amongst them.

@TheRexion - Oops, didn't notice your image before, but now that I have I can tell you that it's pretty freakin' sexy. I love that aurora.. And the logo is so crisp and nice!
@thatbennyguy - Thanks! I'm trying to aim for something slightly cute but painted-looking, so knowing that there's a cutesy vibe definitely helps. :P
As for my screenshot, I have changed a few things around yet again. I'd say it's improved considerably but it's still not quite there yet.

EDIT: Been pootling around with some props for the outside environment and also some lighting effects.

And a night time version:

Ohh, I see what you mean about the lighter dirt now, and I see the lines. I guess I was so focused on hating the darker dirt that I didn't even pay attention to the lighter stuff.. :P I think I'll be changing the colour of the darker dirt yet again because it contrasts too wildly from the other browns on screen, and it's fighting with the trees for eye-catchingness. I'll try desaturating it a bit until I'm happy.
The border will definitely be changed. It reminds me too much of VX's RTP lines between each tile which drives me mad. Thanks for all your help, I'm finding it really useful considering I've not really made tiles before. ^^

Yeah I was never truly happy about that dirt, but I couldn't work out why. I'll scrap it and do another one with far less detail.
I see what you mean about the building being flat. I think it's to do with the colours being far to desaturated in comparison to the grass/leaves. Thanks for pointing those things out! I will dive on them right away!
EDIT: Changed some colours, added windows to maybe try to help and make it look more like a building and (hopefully) less flat, redid the dirt (doesn't look quite so obvious now). I'm a little bothered by the way the tiles touch the bottom of the house. It's mainly because of the mapping, and I think there should be a little garden or something there just to fill it out a bit and give a bit of room to the 'residential' side of the environment.

Have tried out making some custom autotiles. Trouble is, I've been staring at this thing for so damn long that it's all merging into one giant blob of colour in my brain. I can't tell what looks okay anymore, so I'mma leave this here and ask if the colours are too weird against eachother, or maybe if more shadowing is needed, or something less obvious that I'm missing.
Feedback hugely appreciated, good or bad. I just need another person to tell me what's wrong with it really.
(Oh and I'm aware that the door looks like pants. I just threw an RTP door in there to show it's actually a house and not some weird rock formation. Will make a new door later.)
