Newbie asking for RPG Recommendation :)
WIP should have also probably recommended "The Frozen World", so I'm going to pretend he did and second that!
But uh, can you be more specific? Are you looking for primarily traditional RPGs? Or just games that are made in Rpg Maker? There are a couple games out there that really break the mold that are absolutely amazing.

This is a really amazing stylistic adventure puzzle game!
Legacies of Dondoran: http://www.rpgmaker.net/games/85/
This is (from what I've heard) a very long and quality game. I haven't really progressed very far into it, but I intend to. This is a more traditional RPG.
The Frozen World: http://www.rpgmaker.net/games/88/
The Frozen World is probably the game I recommend most. It's also probably the only complete game with a custom battle system and menu. Lys is also one hell of a story teller.
You also might want to check out this game called Sunset over Imdahadhljdslfkjsdalfkj, it's extremely good, though it isn't really an rpg. Can someone check my spelling? I think I'm slightly wrong.
Oh, and keep in mind I only posted complete games! There are other good demos out there. But who plays demos anyway?

Dreaded, maybe you just need something for fitting... a more cartoony pixel art kind of picture. Or you could just move it into the background of the menu. Just a faded trasparent backdrop of the menu might look neat.

I'll just do a top 5, although there's actually 6! There seems to be a tie at 5th.
5) Ennio Morricone - I consider this dude the best thing to ever happen to movie soundtracks, he did the soundtrack to all Leone films, including The Good The Bad and the Ugly!
5) Radiohead - Ok Computer is certainly one of my favorite albums of all time.
4) Jeff Buckley - Best vocalist ever? Maybe. Check out the song Lover you should have come over.
3) Iron And Wine - This dude is getting better all the time... His latest album is among the best I've ever heard. He has a very unique style! Also one hell of a songwriter.
2) Elliott Smith - I tend to stay away from his earlier stuff, but Figure 8 is beautiful!

Your opinion on RTP
I am not really wanting to do away with my RTP heroes.
I'd say this is your answer. You should do exactly what you like, that's the purpose of making your own game. You arn't in this to satisfy others are ya?
But seriously, I love RTP, especially 2000's. 2000 probably had the best RTP of any of them. Either way, RTP or not, if the game behind the visuals is of good quality, people will look past the RTP.
