Aww, I bet you'll make a fun game. Afterall, you are a super plush kitty. And if you feel your game is getting boring...just add more cats! Cute doggos are fine too, but mostly cats.

I think the hardest part of this type of event is constraining oneself to a short narrative. It is definitely good practice tho. >.> 'Reasonable goals' and not 'MMORPG RPGMAKER game with 20000+ hours of content as first game.

Well, since no-one else has yet, how about a Bunny Goo. Its like a cute slime blob with a smile and floppy gooey bunny ears. Not much else to say about it really...it could be doing cute things...Maybe it hopped on Kloe's head. Much squeeing to be had.

When do you have too many side quests?

I felt Witcher 3 pulled off side quests well. There was a story, it was more than "kill x of y", and they tend to have a lot of meat to them. Not that there's anything wrong with "kill x of y", because I love slaying side quests. If you want to keep the objectives simple, Diablo 3 did a good job of keeping the side quests along the route to where your main quest was, so it never felt like you were doing a wild goose chase by completing them.

As far as implementation goes, working in 3s can be helpful. Three side quests per major area or hub.


I agree. Even when it was just a monster slaying quest, Witcher 3 did it very well. Heck, those type of quests actually tie into Geralt's actual job. (You know, slaying monsters normal humans can't deal with.) In addition on those quests you usually learned more about characters, the world, or just why the creation of witchers was deemed a necessary evil in the ages long past.

Also, if you love side quests check out the Winterruption event going on now. Its all about dem sidequests. Makes for good practice in implementing them.

Woo, this seems quite doable, ergo I signed up. And the premise could tie in well with the game I'm working on. Now to accumulate more resources and prep and brainstorm. >.> Brainstorm the snow clouds away...its bloody cold outside and there are frostwolves out.

Sidenote: if anyone wants to be an npc, just toss me a message. (using your sprites, pref already in MV size, is welcome too.)

jRPG Essentials

Personally I prefer Illusion of Gaia over Terranigma, just because the story and atmosphere are better (the bits about the Mu people is darn creepy...one man became as water...)That said, Terranigma is an awesome game I wish had made it to the States back in the day.

People have prolly already posted everything I've played already, but here it goes.
-Chrono Trigger, basically my fave jrpg ever, only minor faults with it are the balance of dual/triple techs late game, they don't scale well, Luminaire ftw
-Lufia II, because good puzzles that don't make you want to strangle hobos, also capsule monsters, Foomy
-Final Fantasy 4,5,6, so you can see how different systems evolved over time, also what not to do when balancing a job class system (5) ie so op with a few setups
-Persona 3: Fes or Persona 3 Portable, awesome games, and they have best waifu, Aigis. (Have you ever wanted to date a toaster?)
-Persona 4 (not golden, because I dislike chie's new voice, she was mah waifu!)
-Persona 5, only seen it as I have no ps4 yet, but it looks great
-Dragon Quest 8, because Jessica...oh and Mr. Satan clone, also pocketmonsters
-(If only snes Shadowrun was a jrpg...it'd make the list...oops)
-The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky series, its a new old school jrpg, lot of fun, on steam and gog, cool magic equip system
-Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, thats jrpg-ish enough, right? Interesting due to story, characters, different 'combined mp system', timed attacks
-Secret of Mana (better than Seiken Densetsu 3 *avoids rocks*) more action-y, but has interesting levelup spell/skill mechanics, which you can totally abuse at water palace, and a wide variety of weapons
-Robotrek(Slapstick in Japan) you create/upgrade/mod your own capsule robot, the Combine system is pretty interesting and could be used as a basis for an Inventor/Alchemist focused game/main char. (For serious crafting there's some Eushully games, but I won't list here, they're rather nsfw)
-Dark Cloud 1/2, haven't played, but heard they have amazing crafting systems. (So want DC 2, but I'm not gonna shell out 50 bucks for a used ps2 game, heh)

There is a ton more, but can't think of em right now.

(Description)
Devil Squirrels are large rodents, resembling its smaller non-monstrous cousins, and vary wildly in size and weight depending on subspecies, mutations, or magical influence. Common varieties average a length of 2.6 feet and weigh 20 pounds. Noteably, almost every variety of Devil Squirrel has the ability to breath fire. These gouts can extend upwards of 12 feet and 2-3 feet wide. This ability does not appear to be fully under the monster's conscious control. Some species have toxin glands in their mouth or paws.
(Ecology)
Devil Squirrels are most likely not wholey native to this world. Several theories exist, with the more popular suggesting it was a sub-planar mutation during the Night of Awe. They are well adapted to many environments. Considered a nuisance at best by humans due to the Devil Squirrels habit of starting fires. They have also been known to accidently set fires to their nests, brush, and forests.
(Economy)
Their hides are prized for its durability and heat resistance, but the poor fur quality has kept it from being a luxury commodity. Hunting DS is common among the Acomat territories where the vermin is pervasive. The meat is edible if properly cleaned with fern fronds, whitecap mushroom spores, or copious amounts of high proof alcohol. (See 'Cooking with Mina, a guide for Adventurers' for more info.)

Black Head, Silver Streak, Jawless, Flying, Jorren's, Rock Biter, Arctic, Sand, Plague Skin, Markut Nanfested, Eastern.

McBacon Jam #4

Bit of a spoilers, but several characters use firearms (its kinda western-y, Wild Arms 3 is awesome and I need to finish it) and so ammo amount comes into play. I have yanfly, hime, victor, galv, and some other scripts playing nice...ish with each other. So each individual weapon item has its own ammo count, but ran into issues with dual wielding or weapon switching, so had to scale back some customization options. Could prolly create a custom plugin to do a proper system IF I was Queen of Javascript, but you know, novice coder here. Still, it works, and if I have time I'll add improvements to it all along the way. (inb4 programmer crunch and gulping down chocolate to stay awake for the deadline)

Libby's fusion form gets access to DualCast and bonus JP on Brawl actions. Its super effective.

Flexibility yep, have a lot of stories and ideas I could use. (Which is one reason I like writing assignments with some types of goals, helps narrow it down, haha.) Also totally gonna check out the past events, thanks McBacon.

McBacon Jam #4

Not sure if I'll be able to complete it because of health, but I'd like to try out the next Jam. (Whether McBacon or McLiberty, whichever or both :p) It'll be my first Jam so hopefully someone posts clear guidelines for it.

Already have ideas for it, the start of a story, etc. Also an interesting (at least for me, hehe) formulae for battles. (That I figured out after a couple hours a day or two ago while testing different systems.)

Have you played Final Fantasy I? Why not?

I divide cheating into if I'm making a game easier, who all is affected by my cheating or if the cheating is some utility to get around a poor or short-sighted design.

For example, I was testing a game that was already shown to have some passability issues (already a very time-consuming task, bumping into every wall.) and then I got to an area where touching walls damaged you. So darn right I made myself invincible. It would've taken all week to test that one area otherwise.

A lot of old games had stuff that just sucked up time. They just didn't know better back then. Stock buying being one of them, especially if the shopkeeper thanks you and it plays a tune with each purchase.


Like the Shopkeepers in Front Mission 1. I do like being thanked for purchasing a giant robot death machine tho. That and the digitized voice was rather impressive back in the day. (Luckily it didn't take that much time since you bought a bunch of items at once, hehe.)

I've played FF1 on nes emu, beat Garland, honked the pirates, sailed my ship across the seven seas, ravaged elves, I mean uh bought a bunch of their stuff and killed some goblins. Don't think I got much further than that tho. The grind was real. Which is saying something, because I got 100% job completion rate in FF5 on the ps1 anthology disc, no speed hacks, cheats, etc...So many hours of grinding... Now I'm replaying the gba version on emu with a finger hovered over fast forward at all times.
