FULMINIS-ICTUS'S PROFILE

Hi!

I'm a composer living in Germany and I'm a huge fan of indie games. I especially like RPG Maker games. One of my biggest inspirations is Joe Hisaishi. I'm already active on the German RPG Maker VX Ace forum. There I'm part of the Ressi team where we create resources for the community every two months.

If you're in need of a composer then feel free to visit my website! You'll find my demo reel there and infos about me and my music.

DEEP 8 composing process

Do you mean "schräg" with oblique? I think I know what you mean though.

I actually think that it sounds better than before. The piano definitely doesn't stand out that much anymore and it fits to the rest of the piece. One of the main reasons why some might think that this piece sounds weird is because it's rather atonal and not many people like atonal pieces (I prefer tonal pieces too btw but I can still see the beauty in atonal pieces. Especially if those pieces are for a horror game ^^).

Here's a nice site for learning music theory which I found a while ago (and it's even in German :D): http://www.lehrklaenge.de/
Here's another German one which focuses more on the basics: http://www.musiklehre.at/
You'll also probably be able to find lots of books about music theory in your local library.
I've also been planning to give composition (focusing on video game music) and music theory lessons. While I still don't feel confident enough to teach video game music composition I think I would be able to help you out in regard to music theory if your up to it.

About the Drum piece: I'm sure that you'll learn a lot about composing for drums after you've tried to make an actual drum piece, so don't give up!

Thank you for explaining how to loop, I'll be sure to correct it!

There's one thing I forgot to mention. After removing the silence at the beginning and exporting it as an MP3 file there will probably still be silence at the beginning. That's just how MP3s are and I'd recommend exporting the piece as either a WAV or OGG file. OGG is actually one of the better formats for the RPG Maker. MP3 files aren't suitable for this kind of looping at all actually.

Okay, I just played the demo and read "The Diary of Hisakawa Mai" and I thought I
might give some feedback.

First off the demo:
The moment I read the warning I knew that this is gonna be really interesting. Only reading this part already sent some shivers down my spine and built the right atmosphere. It's currently midnight here in Germany so that definitely helped. What I loved most is the monster design and the scares. Especially the one where a shadowy person can be seen standing behind the door and after you enter and leave there are suddenly multiple shadows. The jumpscare in the bath really got me as well. The atmosphere was amazing too.

There are some things which bothered me though. I actually expected more puzzles in the demo but there weren't that many actually ;_;. Some things about the audio were weird as well. You chose quite fitting music but the causal exploration piece ("horrorair") didn't loop that great. I know that you got it from a website where those pieces can be downloaded for free but the problem could have been easily solved by cutting away the first few milliseconds of free space at the beginning of the piece. Then no one could tell when the loop would actually start again. Another thing which bothered me is how the sound effect which is played when you find stuff gets cut off as soon as you click away the message. It would be a lot better if it would continue playing even if you dismiss the message. Maybe it's the fault of the Engine though and I'm blaming you although you aren't at fault. ^^

And now "The Diary of Hisakawa Mai":
The story was amazing! It really gave me the creeps. Especially the usage of the sound effects was great. And the ending... just wow. I actually enjoyed it even more than the demo. Don't get me wrong though. The demo was still great ^^

But like in the demo there were still things that bothered me concerning the music. The piece that is played at the 24th ("majo") is kind of unfitting in my opinion. I don't think the music should get more lighthearted because the monster still appears in this part. On the 26th on the other hand is a more relaxed atmosphere because the woman isn't at her home where she had those nightmares and she seems to be out of the grasp of the monster. That's why the piece "majo" would fit a lot better to this scene and the more creepy piece should be used at the 24th day. But that's just my opinion. ^^

In the end it's still up to you to decide whether the things I pointed out which attracted my attention in a negative way are really bad or if my taste in horror games is just off. Most of the things I pointed out are about music because I'm a musician and composer myself so I guess music is the thing which I feel most confident criticizing in this case because I know my way around this topic ^^

I hope I am able to help somehow by telling you guys my opinion. I'm looking forward to the future updates already (especially the ghost diaries)!

Questions about uploading resources

Thanks for the answers, Liberty!

I think I'll follow your advice and create a topic in the creative corner whenever I've added new pieces to my resources. I'll probably just stick to one topic in the submissions part of the forum though because all of the pieces are on my dropbox which makes it easier for me to add new stuff and see what I'm already offering to the community.

There's still one thing I don't get. You wrote that it's not possible to bump threads in the submission section but later on you're writing that it is possible to bump those if I wait a few days. Which is it? Maybe my English is just not good enough to understand what you mean ^^

The Worldbuilder's Fate

Nice to see that you decided to introduce your game here as well! I love your mapping by the way. I forgot to mention that last time ^^

There's one thing that bothers me though: You misspelled my name ;_;

Questions about uploading resources

I was planning to upload some of my original pieces to the resources section but the problem is that I have no idea if I will be able to add more resources later on or edit the "body" to add more info about the newly composed pieces. I also don't know if I would be allowed to "Bump" it to notify others that I've added new stuff by submitting replies which contain the changes made (that may lead to triple or quadruple posts).
At least that's how I'm doing it in the German RPG Maker VX Ace forum but I'm not sure if I can do the same thing here.

I hope someone can help me out and clarify those things.

The demo takes place before the events of the main game, so i'd recommend you play it once the game is released, to get the full experience!

Oh, I thought the demo was just part of the whole game but if that's not the case then I'll gladly play the demo before the full game is released. I think this kind of approach is actually smarter anyway because the people who already played the demo won't be bored when they have to play through the same part twice. The reason why I don't like playing demos is mostly because they oftentimes end on a cliffhanger and then you have to wait so long till the full game is released and eventually die from excitement. Literally. And I'm still to young to die such a death. Guess I'll give it a try then.

Okay, you didn't only convince me that you're able to create a great horror atmosphere but also that you're great at making interesting puzzles. I'm definitely gonna play the game the first night it's out. I'm really looking forward to this.

I just hope that it's gonna be just as interesting as the trailer and mysteries on your site make it seem. Please don't disappoint us and make a great horror game!
I didn't play the demo btw because I don't like playing demos in general unless it's a demo from a project I'm working on obviously.

DEEP 8 composing process

The problem was figuring out a nice melody and structure in major key, not not knowing how to locate them. I don't want to boast or anything but my grades in music class were always pretty good so I guess I should know how to locate the different keys ^^

But if you can't locate them then that's probably the reason why you are writing rather atonal pieces. Some music theory never hurts and it might make composing easier (especially if you want to try out different stiles). But I think that composing without knowing much about music theory doesn't necessarily make someone a worse composer. It would definitely help analyzing works from other composers and you may understand better which techniques cause which effects but what distinguishes a bad composer from a good composer isn't necessarily the amount of music theory knowledge. I'd still recommend learning the basics though ^^

The Magical 8 Bit Plug is a VST (basically an instrument sampler) which you can download for free and use in Cubase. It's not bad for composing some chip tune pieces or tunes which sound like they might be from the NES era. I'm using Cubase too by the way ^^

I'm looking forward to hearing the improved piece!
