Game length and maintaining player interest

I feel like game length shouldn't be a major consideration when planning a game. Instead, it should be an inevitable outgrowth of narrative and gameplay. If your game is 30 hours long but you're still offering the player mechanics that are enjoyable and evolving, then keep going, the game's not done. If your story requires a set amount of locations that equates to 50 hours, then that's how long your game needs to be--just make sure that your gameplay stays fresh and interesting.

If you start planning games out like, "Kids these days have no attention span, so I need to design a game that's less than five hours," or "If I'm marketing towards twenty-somethings, I need keep it short in order to accommodate their schedules," then you're thinking more like a businessman than a creative. Those self-imposed limitations will still allow you to make good games (assuming you design a game that's MEANT to be that short), but you're also limiting the games you can make, which kind of blows.

We Are! Talking about One Piece~

I'm a pretty big One Piece fan, but I'm going to steer clear of this thread for the most part. I just watch the anime; I don't read the manga. I have a feeling that most of the conversations that will take place here will be things I'll be waiting a couple months to see.

ANYWAY, it's a fantastic anime. I do think that the writing could stand to be more concise, but I love how it goes for the gut. The only shonen style anime I enjoyed more was Hunter X Hunter, but I fell in love with One Piece way earlier. Right now, the anime is up to Law and Doflamingo's backstories, and the whole Doflamingo arc coming to a head has been pretty killer.

And, yeah, the 4Kids version tainted my view of the show for the longest time.

The 4kids version is the first one in the clip, the Funimation is the second. And, if you want to see the worst 4Kids mutilation, watch what they did to Nami's backstory (but that's going to contain spoilers).

Partial Guide

The dungeon is in Balfur Castle; you were there during the childhood arc.

You actually didn't beat the boss in Odd Thing Map 5; you somehow made it to an optional enemy encounter. The way you normally get there is by following Richmond's false directions when you first meet him; it was just a little Easter egg. The actual boss you need to fight is in a house, not a cave. It should be impossible to fight the actual boss before recognizing Seamus.

Partial Guide

It's in the Green Vein; you've already been there twice during the course of the game (once when you were kids and once when you were finding Alan as adults). There's another level in the same area that you'll have to go to to purify it that's southwest of Richard's cabin.

Partial Guide

Have you just obtained their Soul Tears or have you used them? If you've just obtained them, you actually will use the Soul Tears later in the game.

Games you hate or dislike?

The 7th Saga. Poor young Housekeeping found it at Gamestop (or was it Funco Land at the time?) and was excited to play an RPG he hadn't heard of before. Part of my childhood innocence died that day.

I also went back and played Phantasy Star 3. I had fond memories of it from my childhood--mainly the lineage system in which depending on who you marry, you'll have a different son and the story will be radically different. Then I played it again and it was just atrocious--worse encounter rates than the default VX.

A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky

@Malandy: To tell you the truth, I'm only passingly familiar with the Harry Potter house system, so you'd probably be better at categorizing them than me, haha.

Gamespot Thread

Thanks for giving A Very Long Rope the Hidden Gem spot! And, thank you, Unity, for recommending it!

Ask Mint

@Malandy: I can't delete your post, Malandy, so I hid it--about the best I can do!

Hey Mint... What Hogwarts House would you be sorted in?

Where would everyone else go?

Mint says:
Come on; books aren't real. I can't go somewhere that isn't real, silly.

Yvette says:
She's just saying that because she'd be in Slytherin.

Mint says:
No, YOU'D be in Slithermen! I'd be in...umm...

Mint says:
Gingersnap!

Yvette says:
If you're going to pretend you've read the books, you might want to be less specific.

[RMN Drama] The guy who made the Final Fantasy Mystic Quest remake is trying to sell it

@Red_Nova: I've never seen that before. Thank you for this gift.
