Still getting more done with this battle simulator.

Did a lot under the hood, like derived stats such as movement speed. Added equipment, so now the weapon sprite is grabbed from the item, as well as things like weapon reach and attack speed. Dual wielding. Added components for projectile-based abilities, though I'm only using it for normal bow attacks right now. Fixed some rendering order problems. Properly implemented RNG seeding. Made sure rumbler object works for the display surface, though I certainly won't have it doing a shake every time there's damage like I'm doing in the video. Some other things I can't remember happened.

How are you liking Seifer? I'm not sure I'm gonna bother getting him to 55+ for the + battles today. More concered with my FF9 crew.
He's fine. I'm not sure you need him 55+ anyway. Mine was Lv50 for the bonus battles. I'm sort of looking forward to going back and clearing the FF2 dungeons with Gordon and Gaia Blade and Seifer's materia (adds Fire magic to his attack and Gaia is a +magic sword). But I have a Balamb Garden Uniform which is a great piece of armor. I gave him that Inferno Dagger to use. I'm not sure he does anything that my Edgar doesn't already do better (tank with light support), since I've got Partisan and heavy armor for him... at least for that niche. But I always go for that +10 synergy first anyway if I don't need a more specific purpose for my Draw Fire guy (like Retaliate or Shellga or Dark Buster, etc).
I ran the last two battles with Rinoa, Squall, Irvine, Seifer, and Sazh. Swap Sazh and Selphie for the boss rush since I pretty much always bring cure magic for boss rushes.
Fun With Formulas
The issue isn't that defense varies, it's that you scaled HP up way too high at 5000. An increase of 4000 HP isn't even remotely equivalent to increasing defense by 400 with that formula, as they don't have a straight 1:10 relationship. To determine your HP scaling you reverse-engineer the formula, starting with how many hits you want an average character to take before they are knocked out. Then you do that again at a high level and smooth that curve. If a character at level 1 starts with 10 attack and defense and you want them to survive ten hits, then they have about 300 HP. A level 50 character with 100 attack and defense has 800 HP. The numbers you choose are equally important to the formula you're using.
I should clarify that this is actually with ATT * (100 / (25 + DEF)). Even in my quoted posting I note that you need to modify your denominator depending on how much you want to value a given statistic and its baseline effectiveness.

I forgot to screenshot my Edea party, but it was pretty easy. Seifer can be slept but between Sleep and Sleep Buster I only got it to land once. Fortunately he has low HP so 8k Biora (with Lullaby Rod--not even a synergy weapon) could knock him out fairly quickly. Edea crumpled in two turns, but even without Advance+Fast Shot she should be pretty straight forward since all of her spells are single target except Maelstrom, which is a gravity spell and won't actually kill you. I had Lure Magic on Seifer and Rinoa's second spell slot was Reflect, so in time Edea would kill herself if I didn't have such potent physical damage.
During lunch I cleared out the FF5 elites and now have 137 stamina. I'd been holding off on them until I actually had FF5 characters that weren't all level capped.
I've decided I'm going to pull only once on FF9. I sort of want to pull on FF10's next event, but I'm always afraid of getting weird weapons like dolls and balls because nobody can use them, and the people who can already have a lot of great alternatives. It's not like pins and guns where the characters who use them can only use those weapon types. Lulu can just use a rod and still be as strong as ever. I'm really eyeballing that Rosa/Edge event and want to pull on both banners if possible.

Eh... I stayed up all night but I did some stuff.

After I got the battle scene working yesterday, I did some brainstorming on a few things.
Decided to do a minimal HUD, with elements being displayed only when relevant, such as the HP bar only appearing when HP is changing. I'll make a full status panel that pops up on combatant mouse-over similar to what was shown in the previous clip but with numerical values as well.
Also made combatant formation to be any set of coordinates, although I haven't made an actual interface to set it up so I'm feeding the battle scene some fixed positions. That way you can put an archer or something in the far corner so it takes melee dudes longer to reach them. Similarly, you could place a tanky type in the center who can intercept enemies that try to penetrate the back lines.
Beefed up the animation stuff in general, like adding weapon sprites for the attacks and effect animations. Something left to do there is to make damage reset the weapon swing timer, which I might do before going to bed. Made combatants jump back to their formation if they're over a certain distance away.
Made some new thing. Always wanted to try dynamic shadows so I figured out a way to do it and made it happen. Right now the only light source is fixed at the top of the screen so the effects are more subtle. But I've made it so light source objects can be fixed or attached to anything with a rect, so I should be able to do neat things like pin a light source to a fireball as it hurdles across the screen, casting shadows from the combatants.
Oh, I also made a new frame for buttons so they look different from windows. I'll probably change it more later.

I guess tonight I'll do the FF8 bonus battles. Usually I wait until Monday so that I can boost the party I want to use on Sunday's XP daily, but I'm feeling fine about levels and will likely double up on my FF9 crew instead. Also have 90 mythril, so maybe I'll pull on both FF9 banners... not sure yet. I should check what's coming up.
You know what felt amazing against Edea? Armor Break, Full Break, Advance -> Fast Shot x2. The witch melted immediately.

Did some very, very cursory work on the battle scene to get it up and running. It's a mess but it's working at the most basic level: output_011.webm

3* and 4* FF8 items don't drop any more often from FF8 banners anyway. All 3* and 4* items drop at exactly the same rate from every banner. The only items that have a higher than normal drop rate are the nine specific 5* items listed in the banner.
That's lame. I guess there are just a lot of FF6 items and I happened to get them all on the same couple of FF6 banners.
Cleared what's available so far on the FF8 stuff. My party seems pretty strong but I'll probably be rotating in Sazh for the bonus fights due to having a spare FF8 gun and because Boon is dope. Immediate goal is to take down Ultima Weapon to get Steiner's memory crystal in preparation for the upcoming FF9 event.

Progressing with this network programming stuff.
Learning a lot of new things so I have to bury my face in the internet constantly to figure out why my SQL queries aren't doing what I thought they would, figuring out how to encrypt passwords and keep data secure, setting up my client so it doesn't disintegrate when data doesn't arrive when and in what order it wants it, etc, etc. But I've got something pretty decent up and running.
Server is running on an Amazon EC2 instance. Server is actually faster than it appears--I built in some sleep on the CPU to see how the client deals with delays and also am printing excessive shit to monitor what's happening.
This is kind of revisiting an old idea I talked about before. An RPG battle simulator, so to speak. Player sets up a party of characters with AI and engage in auto-battles against other players.
