LOTUS_GAMES'S PROFILE

For over 12 years, I have been creating my own video games and art. I started out by creating games on Microsoft Powerpoint believe it or not and then graduated to Rpg Maker and eventually to more advanced engines such as Construct, Unreal Dev Kit, and Game Maker. I have mastered Adobe Photoshop over the last several years and have become proficient in using Blender. I have a passion for creating, learning, and now teaching =]

I suppose your method could possible work NewBlack but actually it's as Gibmaker says. The images are pre-rendered and with some coding they can be made to rotate.

Thanks to the both of you for the comments/interest =]

@Chana: That looks great, maybe add some lighting sfx over the lamps for some subtle glows.

@Link: Hey nice screenshot map, I'm loving the retro/gameboy feel to it. I prefer the mini icons by far.

The Screenshot Topic Returns

Ohhh gotcha, I'll pay with it.

The Screenshot Topic Returns

Yeah it's Eden and the only planet rotates horizontally.

Beginner's Intimidation and High Standards

I disagree, while I can see where you are coming from I think that kids have a slight edge because they are not limited to group think and what society tells them like most adults. Their minds run free and tend to be very imaginative which is why for us it may make no sense at all but for them, their ideas are probably the most original imaginative ideas. Imo you can't underestimate kids. They have a lot of potential and I think that's something to appreciate and not push away. It's important to listen even if we think it's just nonsensical...I think we can learn from them just as much as they can learn from us.

Beginner's Intimidation and High Standards

Well that's the thing Zeuzio, we all have a choice. We all have two roads we can travel...we can either learn and grow or be consumed and destroyed. The newbies you speak of...all of us start in those shoes and the ones you see today making their games are the ones that chose to learn and grow and the ones you don't chose not too. Again what I am saying can apply to any aspect of life I believe.

The thing is that no one can make the choice for you...you have to choose for yourself which path you decide to follow.

Beginner's Intimidation and High Standards

I think you should make the game for yourself first and foremost, as for what other people think it is only relevant if you let it get to you. Personally I use constructive criticism to improve the quality that I create. If I don't feel it is constructive, or if it is mean-spirited, or I just don't agree with it than I don't take it and I think this mentality has helped me to make games for as long as I have been making them.

Let me give you a recent personal example...right here on RMN we had a Christmas Mapping contest and I tried pretty hard to make something original and custom...made my own trees and edited the landscape through tedious work. So I post it thinking it'll get some recognition. At the end of the day no one voted on it or commented on it. At first it caused confusion and I was vocal about it but than I learned to accept the outcome for what it was and congratulated my competitors. Now I remember entering another Mapping Contest a few years back in Gaming World where the outcome was totally different. I think only one other person came even close to what I created and I won by a landslide (I remember people comparing my rpgmaker map to that of playstation games). So you see at the end of it all people's opinions are just that, don't let it affect you in a negative way. If you love making games than keep making them regardless of what happens. Really the only person who has any control over your efforts and the quality that you achieve is yourself. People will help you and hurt you along the way, just like in any aspect in your life you can't let that stop you and on the same note you can't let positive comments make you feel over confident because you can always improve.

Anyways that's how I see not only games but life in general. You can rot away being miserable by what someone else has to say or you can be happy with yourself and still work to improve yourself to be the best you can be. That's all anyone can ask of you anyways.

Beginner's Intimidation and High Standards

I think you have a valid point but may be looking too into it imo. When I tell someone I clearly see is new to game development "Cool, nice job" it isn't meant to be useless or condescending but encouraging. So I don't first off feel they are useless comments, encouragements are always nice I think and shows people that their work is being noticed. Lastly I want to address your main concern. I can't speak for this site as a whole as I am not a fully active member (I'm usually only on the screenshot topic and main page) but I think you have to remember we were all novice at one point or another. When I started out making my first few rpg maker games I thought I was putting a lot of work into them and its not like I got a whole lot of feedback either...heck I still don't always get that even today.

And yes I did see plenty of games that looked way better than mine at the time. But those games that looked so amazing to me back then...how long do you think it took those people to make their game?

The games I make now I work 10 times as hard on as I did when I first started 8 years ago and only make 1/10 of the progress with gameplay time as I did back than...and yes I did think I had put a lot of time into my earlier games...but I put in way more now.

So my point is you shouldn't be discouraged but let other people's work inspire you...that is how you will get better as a developer yourself! Let it motivate you not hinder you.
