2014 Misaos - The VOTENING

... the misaos are kind of a lightweight nonserious thing...

They feel like the Oscars sometimes though.
Exactly! XD
I don't think any awards ceremony can be approached in a way that is perfectly fair without completely dissolving into obscurity. The frustrated conversations about who should win what, and what is unfair, and how it can be fixed next time, is/are the bread and butter of the appeal of awards. The Oscars, in all of its stupidity, thrives on all of its stupidity.
I set some votes for now, just in case. I need to play It Moves and Soul Sunder.
Just getting the data for what to choose is worth the contest. Even if I don't agree that a game should be in Category X, the thoughts I have about it are great game design thoughts that I can take with me after the fact. So this is turning out to be pretty cool.
2014 Misaos - The VOTENING
My immediate thoughts were close to Unity's, which were about how there were so many Best Setting nominations for a (well-executed) spin-off.
Although I'm stoked that Oneshot is in that category, because the setting/atmosphere is probably the highlight for me! I'm not even sure if I nominated it for that category, but seeing it there now makes all the sense in the world. XD
I still have a couple games in this nomination list I need to burn through, or at least sample. Antagonist is coming up next; it rivals my main nomination for Best Characters (The Heart Pumps Clay). If nothing else I've got to play all the ones contesting the nominations I managed to squeak in.
The only category I'm not iffy about is Best Non-RPG. Exeunt Omnes is a shoo-in for me.

Alterations: Part 02
Thanks, guys!
I like them like that as well--my preference is to stay like this. But most feedback says the opposite. I've read more than a few comments by people who said they didn't even try the game because they specifically didn't like the colored silhouettes, while the majority of professional feedback I got from the contest suggested making non-silhouette pictures for release.
I'm a fan of letting the player's imagination fill in the features, but too artsy doesn't sell. XD
I'm still going to try and direct it so they have heavy color schemes and prominent blackened features, but if nothing else the new art will do a good job visually differentiating the commercial version from the contest version. My compromise is that I'm going to keep the sprites the way they are.

You mean the silhouettes weren't a purposeful stylistic choice? :O I kind of like it that way, personally...

Fleuret Blanc.
Cool, thanks! I think you'll like where everything goes. :) Hopefully most of your questions about it will be answered as the game progresses.
The button presses for menial tasks is actually just a shoe-horned tutorial. You can use all of those things in bouts at some point, and I'd rather you figure them out in a situation that has no consequences, rather than an important Trophy Bout or something. Since the scenes typically don't progress until you've done the timing thing, you've "learned" how to do it before it pops up from some special skill or something.

Last Word (IGMC Version)
Thanks a lot, NeverSilent! That means a lot to me!
The game as it is (made for the contest) has some blank spots. And the ending is vague because I didn't get the time I need to flesh out the whole thing.
The Boasting bit is a little rushed, and the idea was that the whole sequence would expand based on what you collected/knew by the end, like an Ending+ situation. So there's no need to go back in this version just yet, because the missing components are things that I missed, not you.
Glad you liked it!

2014 "Official" Misao Predictions/Discussion Thread
I'm still on the fence about a lot of the categories, but I think I'm going to nominate The Heart Pumps Clay for either characters or story direction. Or both.
You should definitely add it to the main list. :)

The Farming One
Hey, I just got around to playing this one! I think it's an excellent and inventive spin on the original concept. Really great work! Glad I got to check it out.
V*C dies at the end
Whoo-hoo! And that's only the traceable number. I'm sure you've had more with the contest download. Great work!
Fleuret Blanc.
I read the Ever17 review, as well as your comment (I think that was yours) linking to the fair play stuff. I love mysteries, as well as those authors, and was surprised to have never heard of those rules before.
I think they're fair, and good rules for murder mystery tales. Maybe a bit too prescriptive. I know Christie's broken a few of those rules several times, but Fleuret Blanc definitely broke basically all of them! XD
Like, one says not to have more than one secret room or passageway; Fleuret Blanc has three. I even use them in Last Word and Social Caterpillar!
I'm not familiar with Dragon Quill. What exactly is it, and what's your affiliation? That review of Ever17 was a good one. Informative and fun to read.
