Introduction to Linux course MOOC

Installing untested and unstable kernel, weird, third-party drivers written by 10 years old or compiling one from git repo has always permanently ruined any of my hardware before.

FTFY.

Also somebody hates penguins and obviously chosen some overly complicated distro like gentoo or arch for their first Linux. Dude, get Mandriva, openSuSE or Ubuntu.

Where is the Rpgmaker

This site was much help.
Huh, isn't this contradicting your first statement. I'm so confused!

IMHO GNU/Linux is easier to use than Windows. Just use it and read the documentation and will see why. Windows documentation for specific tech tasks is very brief.

Exactly. Also Linux is more stable, has virtually no viruses (and those that exist can't replicate on their own, you must be stupid enough to install it yourself), but you probably already know that.

Unfortunately I need to use C®a$hdows™ because people at Unity Technologies and Emptybrain are bunch of assholes and don't want to port their editors to Linux (and in case of RM, engine itself). Yes, RM sorta works on wine (though only version that really work is 2k/2k3, maybe 95), and Unity editor sorta works on it too (by sorta, I mean the most useful feature, the Asset Store ISN'T WORKING WHATSOEVER).

So unfortunately I can't use best OS in existence because of some corporate nutjobs.

RPGMaker 2009 in Windows 8

Hmm, I tried it, and it works. Perhaps you have some weird RM2k3? Author of translation and version of RM? Perhaps you are using Japanese RM2k3?

//edit: Sending your RPG2003.exe to Cherry should be enough to debug it.

If I created a really small gadget (~5 minutes) could I display it?

Well, submission requires 4 screenshots. Kinda hard to make screenshot of game for blind people (which implies no graphics). Unless you'll do graphics but still leave audio cues so both regular and disabled people could play it.

Although for such games, exception should be made in rules regarding screenshots.

How short is a short game?

I think anything less than 1h of gameplay can safely be marked as short.

Too bad there's no way to make separate menu for items, eg. key items or character-specific stuff.
There is - it's called a custom menu system and takes a lot of work (more than most people are willing to do) in 2k/2k3.

And is easier with DynRPG, especially since Cherry started to work on it again.

RM2K3 Since there is no such thing as a stupid question...

You need to patch RPG_RT, not rpgmaker.exe (or whatever RM2k3 editor's exe name is)

Windows XP users, looks like we just got tossed into the sea.

Part of the reason people avoid using Windows 8 is because these kinds of opinions form and they don't think to look at what solutions might be out there. I haven't seen MS's version of the start menu but I heard it wasn't as full featured as one would want. The new start menu is part of 8.1 which is already released.
Seems quite feature-complete to me

I bet the biggest issue Win8 haters will bring up is lack of start menu. There has been a solution to that since the very beginning, I posted it on page 1 of this topic. I've had it for a full year now. Windows 8 can have FULL START MENU FUNCTIONALITY AND THEN SOME. It's third party software, but has no issues or bugs that I've seen.
I bet it work great for people with Windows in English. But how about Greek/Japanese/Russian/Polish systems? Do I really have to put up with start menu IN ENGLISH on my Polish machine? Does Ivan has to deal with start menu in ENGLISH on his Russian machine? Does Hiro have to deal with start menu IN ENGLISH on his Japanese machine?

Oddly enough, I'm kinda used to it now, but when I first joined the site I too found it annoying.

I know, right? Problem is that I mostly use phpbb or vBulletin/XenForo based forums (with some MyBB and SMF mixed in, but not much) and RMN is one of sites I rarely use so I can't get used to it even though I'm registered for few years.

Thanks kentona for adding it to a todo list.
