Dark Souls (I and II)!

Loved Dark Souls 1. Playing Dark Souls 2 right now. One of my friends no lifed the game and beat it three days after it came out. I hate rushing through a game like that, so I'm taking my time, letting myself get immersed, and not summon any non-NPCs until I've beaten the game once.

It's a wonderful type of game, where the backstory is up to your own personal interpretation. I loved that type of storytelling so much that it's an inspiration for my own game.

I always tell people that the best kind of video game story is one that the gameplay compliments, not have the gameplay there to keep the player from getting bored. The Souls games nail that perfectly, since you're an undead, and undead can die a lot and... well, it's a long explanation. Just know that it works.

I have a problem with Dark Souls 2, though. One on hand, it's an amazing game. It fixes every problem I had with Dark Souls 1. However, that's exactly what it feels like to me: a game. Dark Souls 1 felt like an experience. Dark Souls 2 felt like a game. A wonderful, challenging, and rewarding game, but a game nonetheless.

Did that make sense? I hope it did.

Anways, for those that want to figure out some of the more vague aspects of the story for the Souls series, check out this guy's channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCe0DNp0mKMqrYVaTundyr9w

He is fantastic, and he puts his heart and soul into each one of his vids, which I totally respect.

Is it bad to add tons of custom stuff?

Yeah. Figure out the core concept that you're going for and add the custom content you need to make it work. You don't have to have tons of custom stuff, just use the resources that compliment the sort of game you're making.

Says the person who made 100% custom assets for your game. Haha.

But yeah, if you're not confident about the custom content you would be making, like tilesets for example, you'd be better off just editing RTP to your liking.

As to your original question: No. Inherently, it is not bad to have lots of custom content. Quite the opposite, actually.

Game Update

This looked really cool, so I subscribed a week ago wanting to find time to play this. I'm downloading it now.

I'll give you my thoughts later tonight when I'm done.

Games you love but everyone hates.

You know, I'll always be the first person to say how much I hated FFXIII. Yet I did actually finish it. So there was something that kept me playing. I played it the year it came out. And I still have yet to find out what that something was.

That something did prevent me from playing XIII-2 and Lightning Returns.

Another game that I feel like I'm the only one in the universe that loved was Megaman X Command Mission. I mean, it was a Megaman X RPG! How awesome is that? I played hundreds of fan-made RPGs starring the Blue Bomber, but this was the first professionally made game! It had LOADS of secrets, unlockables, and bonus weapons and even alternate forms for two characters. The unlockables were my favorite part of the game, since I'm a sucker for games that let me see concept art.

I just wish the writers didn't go on strike the second half of the game...

On difficulty, items, and a possible walkthrough.

Well, I like to think that I'm not nearly as... eccentric... as him.

The site titles under the RMN logo were a good idea. They keep getting better with age.

Am I the only one who barely ever looks at the tags? And every time I do, I keep seeing ones I've seen before. Maybe I should start noticing them more often?
Well, another useless habit, yay!

So they're all the same? There's no real diversity?

You'd think we'd be good at this by now.

The first level

Perhaps designing the first level last would make a bit more sense if you're making a commercial game, or working on a team. But I still think it's important to work on the game's first level after you've reached a point when you know EXACTLY what you want to do in the game. That way, you can set everything up the way you want it, and not have to go back and edit things you already put behind. Because you may have forgotten some small detail you included in the intro that editing will mess up. Since it's much easier to create it from scratch than it is to go back and edit something you've already done.

If sudden events come up in your life and time suddenly becomes a concern, I would think that cutting corners in the middle of the game would be preferable. If you cut corners in the beginning, the player would assume the rest of the game is just as bad and stop playing. If you cut corners at the end, it'll leave the player with a sour note. But in the middle, the player would already be hooked and would continue playing (as long as the corner cut isn't so deep it bleeds out to the rest of the game.)

Fidchell will stream your games!

I'd love for you to try out Soul Sunder! It's a rather challenging survival RPG. I'm sure that, by the time you get to it after getting through all the other games on this list, the big update will have been released.

Knowing where everything is, it took me about 4 hours to beat it on my last playthrough (including the update that isn't available yet. The current demo has about 2.5 hours of content), so there's a pretty decent amount of content. There's less emphasis on grinding and more on resource management, so if that's your thing then great! It's rather heavy on the dialogue, so it may bore the viewers that aren't interested in story, but a good chunk of the dialogue is optional, so you have that going for you.

Just figured out that there's a status thingy on this site.

So long as you don't confuse this with Facebook and post a status every five minutes.

Other than that though, post lots!

Okiku, Star Apprentice

Oh wow. Thank you, Marrend!

You wanna break the silence? Um... okay, what do I do...?

This game is awesome! Everyone who is reading this post has to go play it! What's that? You've already played and beaten it? Well go play it AGAIN and beat it AGAIN! Otherwise you'll get blasted!
