Video Game Purchases

author=TooManyToasters link=topic=2773.msg52835#msg52835 date=1230521461
I just bought Disgaea DS. I'm not very far into it, but it's really, REALLY good so far.
The only complaint I've got with Disgaea DS is one that realistically, they couldn't have gotten around, and that's how much voice acting they stripped from it. It's got some of the better voice acting out there and it's a shame how little of it makes it into the DS game, especially since 99% of CAPTAIN GORDON, DEFENDER OF EARTH's lines are text-only. New fans are going to have no idea why CAPTAIN GORDON, DEFENDER OF EARTH is so great.

I just bought and have been playing Dragon Quest VIII. I'm almost up to where I left off at when I rented it from GameFly, and enjoying it fairly well. Not much to say about it that wouldn't be "You should know this already" for a Dragon Quest game (it's unapologetically old school, pretty difficult, the character designs have those familiar Akira Toriyama faces...) I also bought Tales of Vesperia on iishenron's advice, but haven't received it yet. I liked the demo I downloaded, though.

You know, i almost returned this game to the store. I am soooo glad I didn't.
These bosses are getting rapetastic, though. Giga Gaia wasn't too bad if he doesn't wreck you in the first few seconds, especially since the arms could be killed with one Triple Strike from Crono, frog and Robo. The Golems, however, are a tad difficult.
Giga Gaia is one of the harder bosses in the game. The Golems aren't so bad if you know the trick to beating them--namely, getting all your characters to wear armor that protects against an element (Fire armor's the easiest to obtain en masse, since you'll probably have had trouble collecting all the elemental Vests and Mails by that point, at least on your first playthrough), and only attacking them with that element.

If you've ever played an RM2k game, you can tell Enterbrain sat down and said, "Let's make a game maker that can recreate Dragon Quest games."
Meanwhile Etrian Odyssey was "Let's make a game like a Dragon Quest game, only even harder and targetted specifically at OCD people."

Damn you, Etrian Odyssey, FORCING me to map out entire dungeons just by knowing what buttons to push in my head!

How the fuck does this happen?
I had a Megadrive growing up. Nintendo is doing shit here outside of the handheld market, even the PSP over here is selling just as much though but in the Gameboy days Nintendo was in fire.
Yet more proof that places that aren't America are backwards crazypants lands where dogs walk people and David Hasslehoff is a star.

Internet persona vs "Real life" persona

One last thing about offline... it's easy to see peoples' intentions and hidden agendas based on their body language, and speech mannerisms.

I very much disagree with this, being a girl. I've seen and felt the deviousness of women throughout my entire life, which is part of why they make me so uneasy - it's completely impossible to tell what they really feel. Most times, in girls at least (women are hopefully but not necessarily more mature), you'll get a cheery smile, even a hug, sometimes an "Oh my gosh I love you!" when really they're secretly ruining your whole life/stealing your boyfriend/telling everyone nasty secrets about you.

Men can be equally devious if they please... I feel that they have less necessity for deviousness due to the evolution of men and women since ancient times (while a man in Rome could generally kill another man outright without much repercussion, or show obvious signs of ambition, women had to resort to devious maneuvering and poisoning because outright ambition was not acceptable), but I've seen my fair share of guys who lie. Just not as many as girls.

Any good liar has it in them... just look at sociopaths. They're always "nice," "charming," and socially perfect. Inside, they have the makings of serial killers.

But I prefer rl to ol because if you do something nasty IRL, you have a face and must be accountable for your nastiness. Online, there is no accountability, which gives a perfect outlet for people who like to be cruel (which most humans have a tendency to be). Also, if you're harassed/bullied irl, people take it seriously... whereas, online, people are more likely to say "oh, it's only the internet" even if it is just as (or more) hurtful.

I try to be the same person online as I am IRL, which is difficult, because I'm not on the same wavelength as other people who like to harass others "4 teh lulz."
Intangible, non-verbal communication is a lot harder to fake than people think, and once you really learn to read another person's body language, vocal tones, and mannerisms, it's very difficult for them to pretend they're not feeling a particular emotion, even if they can lie to you about facts.

That often comes down to knowing the individual, but there's a certain degree of intuitive empathy that works even on strangers, and it's mostly just a knack.

In my experience, you can generally tell when someone's being bitchy to you, even if their words make them sound sincere. At least in real life. Online....it's tough enough to tell when someone's joking (something that has plagued me for a while, since people have a habit of taking things I type ironically at face value), much less if they're just baiting you into making an ass of yourself.

Chrono Trigger DS

You want a challenging Lavos fight, fight him in the Undersea Palace instead of at the endgame. He's way more difficult there. At least Lavos' Shell is. I can't remember ever having beaten him, so I don't know if the inner parts are more difficult.

Internet persona vs "Real life" persona

My online personality and my offline personality are basically the same, but I'm slightly more outgoing and confrontational (though I wouldn't say aggressive) online. Or at least, more willing to deal with conflict. Conflict makes me very nervous in meatspace.

RMN Roleplaying Group: SECOND TRY!

I've got no plans at the moment, because for starters I'd rather not be the one running the campaign. I'm trying to organize a group, but I'd rather not take point unless no one else is winning.

What we did last time was Ventrilo with MapTool. There were a lot of technical issues there, though. Skype was what I had suggested at first, but one of the players couldn't get it to work on his system.

Didn't you vanish from the site for a few months?

I probably won't do this because I am a pretty busy guy, but I'm not sure how long something like this will together without a bit of devotion from the manager.

Like I implied in the first post, I've been in the busy season at work and they had been keeping me late so I dropped out of the old game. I gave people forewarning of that and designated a new DM before I did so, though. Real life interferes with RP groups all the time, and I certainly can't swear it's not going to happen again, but I'll be sure to give people some warning that it's going to happen and try to set up a replacement if it does. No one else can honestly promise more than that.

RMN Roleplaying Group: SECOND TRY!

Well it looks like the last attempt at an RMN Roleplaying group fell through. With the school year ending and my busy period at work coming to a close, I thought I'd try to get things going again. Anyone interested in trying to start up a new campaign? Last one was D&D 4th, which I'd like to try again, but I don't insist on it, so feel free to suggest a different system if you want to try it out.

Other than D&D 4th, I've got BESm 2 & 3, Tristat dX and access to GURPS, D&D 3rd, and some of the better known White Wolf games, so those would be my favored systems. Anyone else interested and want to pull anything together? And is anyone interested in being GM?

DSi

I'm probably going to pick one up. I'm still on a DS Phat, and the lighting issue is getting worse. And I rarely play GBA games on my DS anymore anyway--Mother 3's the first I've played in months, and I'll be finished with that before the DSi comes out anyway.

It's not a deciding factor, but it'll be nice to only have to carry my DSi, and not my DSi AND my iPod around with me if I want to listen to music.
