Who Are You Mean To?
I'm generally belevolent. Of course I also live by the rule that "Good is dumb" which have been present in some stories of mine. Usually any character that is "The Hero with a capital H" does get a lot of shit, so I guess I have something against heroes. (Though being mean to those isn't exactly a novel idea. But it's still one of those that I like. You know... The Dungeon Keeper effect. "Those pesky heroes, always in the way trying to save the world.")
The importance of Music in a game
Arcanum's music did get on my nerves eventually. However it was very silent and subdued so it never actually bothered me and it did add to the atmosphere. However I think it was the battle music that got really tiresome after a while.
And if I don't remember incorrectly the rest of the soundscape wasn't that great. (especially in the battles)... Man that game had a problem with battles obviously! :D

What other games has noteworthy music in your opinion? I ask this so that I cansteal from itmake up a good playlist for myself.
There are a couple of tracks that have made my gaming playlists. Apart from the regular "themes" and regular music (like music games or otherwise having real tracks in games... Listening to the country station in GTA:SA while roaming the countryside with a motorbike was pretty fun for example).
Deionarra's Theme in Planescape Torment. It's pretty early on and suddenly the music changes and (spoiler) the ghost of Deionarra appears and it's all musicy and I'm all wtf and stuff like that.
Moldy Old World in Vampire Bloodlines. A nice piece that plays in the Giovanni Mansion. I actually roamed around the area a bit extra just for the music.
Going underwater in Commandos 2. There was just something special about swimming around trying to get away from nazis and diving underwater and suddenly this weird and wonderful music came over me while all the sound effects were muffled. I was in a different world. And then I had to surface before I suffocated and back into the WW2 action.
The overworld theme in Final Fantasy VI. Alright so everyone knows about this one but I still remember when I first stepped onto the overworld in FFVI after doing some Narshe(?) fighting I was "WTF IS THIS!" I stood still for a while just listening to the music.
That's a couple that have stuck in my mind. Themes are of course also great (bubble bobble, monkey island etc.) but they aren't in the actual gameplay any.
Articles: Why they are neglected and what you can do about it.
A lot of the article space can nowadays be put into the game blogs (in the form of personal anecdotes and designer notes). In some ways it's even better since you have got the game and then you have some notes on it that you put into the game blog for those interested in further reading. (sort of like making-of documentaries)
I think the way to do articles is essentially to have a sort of featured article as part of the RMN Snews or something similar. The articles are few enough between them to pick one and put it into the newsletter. It could also have some sort of guest writer setup where you could essentially "order" an article from someone. "hey xxx you've made some interesting games. Write an article for the next newsletter. It can be about xxx or something else if you'd rather do that".
Essentially I think the way to get the best articles is essentially to ask someone they know know about something to write it. The thing is it tends to be that those that know about the stuff in articles tend not to bother writing them.

Halloween Short Game Contest
post=101358post=101306That is a good question. No, it won't be fair to the people who are soloing it (a lot of people). Obviously being able to double the work force puts you at a high advantage for a small timeframe. You can have 'some help' with your project like ideas or resource finding, but ultimately you'll be entering as one person.
Are people allowed to collaborate?
Not to be overly nitpicky and weird about it all but what counts as soloing? I mean is it okay to use graphics someone else made or use music/sound someone else made? (I'm bad at graphics and I probably couldn't do music even if I tried)
And now I've got my game idea. Zombies. Definitely.

Signup required?
I'd love to try this. Though what I'm severely lacking is a proper game idea.
Zombies?
RMN3.1 Upcoming Features
I hope game achievements will be downlplayed because I can see how they can be very dumb indeed. With all the one-battle demos with achievements like "used attack!" "used magic!" "used items!" "used the massively impressive interactive junction of death (MIIJoD) system!"
Of course the achievement metagame can be fun. But still I hope it won't too much in your face...

That's correct. But that's okay, most movie soundtracks are not original compositions. Look at the Garden State soundtrack, for example. On the other hand, there are movies with awesome original soundtracks, like Conan The Barbarian and Edward Scissorhands.
That's not quite true. I'd say most movies have original soundtracks (and many movies also have a couple of licensed songs). Sure there are some exceptions. Such as Tarantino and possibly Garden State. (Tarantino used original music for the first time in Kill Bill. I don't know if Garden State included any original music since IMDB is slow on loading for me at the moment... Alright now it loaded and it has a credit "Original music by: Chad Fischer" so I assume Garden State included original music after all)
Epic Mickey - Exclusive Wii steampunk action game by the maker of Deus Ex and Thief!
I have to admit I would prefer if it was Donald. Because Mickey is such a boring character :D (And in my world Mickey and Donald don't occupy the same universe)
But the art style does look fairly sweet. The style seems very "euro" ("French comic book Euro").
But still I can totally see Scrooge, Donald, Huey, Dewey and Louie adventuring in a world like this. Mickey on the other hand. Not so much... He's so... traditional.

Yeah i agree, when you play a game with loads of chunks missing music, it really damages the enjoyability. All i can focus on is the silence, and i don't know if i can bother putting a CD on or what(i never do). It makes it drag.
Lack of music is not really the same as silence though. Take a game like Half-Life 2. There are lots of sequences in that game that doesn't have any music at all yet at no point do I want to put in a CD or anything because I'm busy trying to hear stuff sneaking up on me and KILLING them with my LOUD GUNS.
