The importance of Music in a game

post=100869
Yeah i agree, when you play a game with loads of chunks missing music, it really damages the enjoyability. All i can focus on is the silence, and i don't know if i can bother putting a CD on or what(i never do). It makes it drag.

Lack of music is not really the same as silence though. Take a game like Half-Life 2. There are lots of sequences in that game that doesn't have any music at all yet at no point do I want to put in a CD or anything because I'm busy trying to hear stuff sneaking up on me and KILLING them with my LOUD GUNS.

The importance of Music in a game

I have to admit I don't think music is all that important. Of course awesome music will make a game better and sucky music will make a game worse.

Much more important than music is sound effects and general sound design. THAT can sometimes make or break a game (depending on the genre). I guess though that the music is part of the sound design (when's it appropriate to put in that music score? How will it sound when there are explosions all over the place?)

An RPG example is battle music. Battle music that meshes well with the attack sounds will always give a more fulfilling experience. The best example I can come up with at the moment is my (ancient) memories of Final Fantasy 7. Where the music sometimes really hit it right when it came to the attacks. It didn't always work but the battle music was made so that it had a lot of high points so the chance of hitting a high point just as you did a massively awesome attack was pretty high.

A BASIC Guide to Romance

But this is not at all like the movies.

Proper romance storytelling is always love-at-first-sight. At least for one of the parties. Essentially skipping steps three and four for some hot romantic love.

In the love at first sight scenario I suppose it would go something like this:
A sees B and falls in love.
A tries to make B notice A so that B too can fall in love A.
Hilarity/drama ensues.
B finally realizes that he/she also loves A.
As B tries to confess the love for A something else comes up. A simple misunderstanding that tears them apart.
The misunderstanding is overcome through the help of friends and some love poems.
A and B are finally together.

Alright. So maybe not. But most of romantic stories are all about skipping the friend phase. (hell romantic comedies often refer to it as the dreaded friend zone where romantic possibilities are no longer an option)

And romantic comedies are a great source for romance plots.

Essentially. Friend to lover. I don't buy it.

Who's the hottest videogame character?

Yes. The above is what you get when you google image "hottest videogame character".

RMN Documentation

I'm not sure how much of a beta stage the page still is in but while submitting a game (yeah I submitted a game woo) the thought occurred to me that this page really lacks in documentation. I mean for an experienced web user most of the stuff is pretty obvious. But there are certain other things that aren't.

For example the red asterisks, the probably mean that a field is mandatory. But it doesn't actually say anywhere that a red asterisk means that a field is mandatory. Similar with submissions. The submission guidelines for articles and reviews essentially consist of one general line.

Then also various kind of forum post codes and similar. I don't think that I've found a comprehensive list of all the tags that are available to a user. An experienced user may think oh yeah obviously the regular tags work but then there are probably some tags that don't (I don't actually know which work and which don't. Is there a spoiler tag in this forum?)

There are a lot of features to this site but I don't really think that there's any good documentation for any of it. I don't really know who'd be best suited for this kid of documentation or if there should be a community effort "let's find features". But I do think that some more information on guidelines and forum code and all kinds of other stuff would be nice.

Let's watch as many horror movies as we can in October!

I thought Silent Hill had a pretty happy ending. It seemed all the main characters were more or less happy with where they ended up. Same with the Others. And there was also the sense that "whew it's all over and there's not going to be a hand coming out of the grave before as the final shot".

That's happy horror endings to me. (Ring for example is an example of a not-so-happy ending since when it's all "over" it still isn't goddamn over!)

Let's watch as many horror movies as we can in October!

I like horror movies with happy endings which is why I really liked The Others (and also Silent Hill). Does any of you have any nice suggestions for horror movies with happy endings?

Let's watch as many horror movies as we can in October!

I recommend the Others and [rec] for you people out there. Also for Halloween theme try to find Murder Party it was pretty fun :D

And I really want to see the Orphanage except of course that the DVD release doesn't have proper subtitles (fuck you cinema mondo and your inability to provide Swedish subtitles)

I'll see if I can get my hands on some horror films to watch but I'm not generally the type that seeks out horror and horror is one of those genres that aren't much fun to rewatch (except for zombie action horror of course but you know the regular suspense horror. The good kind. Not the bad kind.)

Small Update: More Genres available

it'd be great if there was a system of plot / gameplay-based keywords so sort games by. that would be nifty.

You're saying games need TAGS?
