THEDIGITALMONK'S PROFILE

I have a fairy in a cage next to my computer. I feed it peanuts and Diet Dr Pepper. When I want ideas, I beat it with a wooden paddle.

I pretty much only do music for games now. I have good ideas for story or gameplay every now and then, but I'm not good enough to make it happen. If you see me as the developer of a group game, you can rest assured that I'm doing the music and really just acting as a sounding board for the other developers.

Possible Idea: RMN Platinum (or something like that)

Your categories are too broad. Gameplay design and level design are vastly different. Atmosphere I could see a case for.

There are about 15 categories for the Misaos at the moment and a game must fulfill certain requirements to be eligible for them.

Fair enough.

I would still highly suggest trimming down the number of games eligible for a Misao though. 30 games in one category spreads the votes way too thin, plus it's highly unlikely that people went through all 30 eligible games before making a vote. It might work nice if we tally up nominations first (instead of straight up votes) and then take the top 5 or so (or however many you want) and do a run-off.

This
1. Gives the 'nominated for a misao' title a great honor regardless of winning or not.
2. Allows people to actually take a look at all of the games on the list before voting
3. Condense the vote so it's not spread so thin (and thus, makes it more accurate).

:D

Possible Idea: RMN Platinum (or something like that)

You know, what if we had nominations ALL year round and then voting during one month. This way, it's fun because it's the entire year around but we also get that wonderful "once a year" buzz. :D

Can you name all the Pokémon Characters (Generation 1)?

Once upon a time, yes.

Now?

Maybe 75?

That's still a lot. wow.

Possible Idea: RMN Platinum (or something like that)

Now granted, I wasn't here when the Misaos were once a year, but I quite like the idea of a 'buzz'.

EDIT: I think all we really need is to generate a little buzz about the Misaos and maybe focus them down a little bit (there looked like up to 30 or more nominees for some categories.... way too much in my opinion).

One of the problems I'm seeing is too many categories and too many nominees... Run with me for a second.

Categories:
-Game of the Year
-Best Visual
-Best Audio
-Best Story
-Best Gameplay
-Most Innovative
-Technical Achievement

Five nominations per category.

Things like atmosphere and level design would easily fall under story and gameplay respectively for example so they don't necessarily need their own category and it would add a lot more 'sleekness' to the award to trim it down and shape it up.

Classical Music that Pwns

haha, I played Shostakovich 5 just earlier this year.

Classical Music that Pwns

Welcome to Classical Music that Pwns, the thread that is determined to show YOU, the person who probably doesn't regularly listen to classical music, why you SHOULD.

=Part1= July 15, 2010
For this part, I'm going to show you one of the modern classics, The Planets by Gustav Holst. This is the piece that John Williams openly and unapologetically drew from when he composed the music for Star Wars. The piece is written in seven movements, one for each of the planets in our solar system excluding Earth.
Here's one of the most popular ones, Mars:

Give it a listen, it won't kill you. Probably.

=Part2= July 22, 2010
If I had to describe this piece in one word, it would be... EPIC. With this one, you HAVE to listen to it all the way to the end. The last minute or so is one of the best endings ever written for anything. Fantasia did a little cartoon to go along with it and it works quite nicely. The piece was originally written as a ballet, but it's more famous for the condensed version: The Firebird Suite by Igor Stravinsky.

I've never used this site to compose, but I have used it to practice getting around the piano better. It should help you come up with some good ideas though.

A tip though, don't always change chords in even increments. There's something called harmonic rhythm and it can be fast or slow, depending on how often you change chords... and it's a great way to build energy. So start with your first chord, hold that for two measures, go to your second for two measures, go to your third for one measure, fourth for one measure, fifth for half a measure, sixth for the second half, then resolve onto your 7th chord.

Someday, I might compose for film/movies

I broke one of my rules for this one though, and the percussion you hear is a combination of 3 loops. I only did that because it's an experiment though. I would never publish something with a loop and call it my own.

Enjoy!

Guys, I have found the Platinum games list on RMN:

What a G.

It's really easy to find the "best of the best" at least for an individual. When you have all of this:

http://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/2630/
http://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/3549/
http://rpgmaker.net/misaos/
http://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/4933/
http://rpgmaker.net/games/?engine=&status=&rating=8&sort=rating
Each year there is only ONE game determined "Full game of the year". So new kids can just start with that if those list are too massive for them.

Hmmm, so there's a Misao for overall game of the year? I can't find it /cry

Maybe that's the key, just make more awareness for games that have been featured or have won a Misao award...

LockeZ, sorry aboot the big blank space, here's the second draft version with no silence at the end:

And I've worked on the song again, and I think this one keeps the energy of the song up more. I kept most of the melody, though:

I think I'll get myself practicing composing stuff for other game scenarios. AKA there's only so much I can do with this little battle theme without just scrapping it entirely. Not to downplay all the constructive criticism I've been getting, though, but seeing as I meant the battle theme as... well, I guess practice would be the right word, it would drive me insane to keep redoing it over again.

Plus, I'm sure I'm getting really annoying by now.

Hey, I dunno if you still want feedback, but I would ditch those drum beats. And this is coming from someone who's main instrument is percussion.

Your biggest thing you should think about is adding more contrast. Lets take a look at one of the great battle themes, FF6 (I think it was linked earlier on). Notice how the melody is not just one measure of fast notes copy and pasted. There are times when it's got fast running notes, and times when it's long held out notes. Also notice how much more active the bassline is. You tend to sit on the same chord for quite a bit too long. Try adding some chord progressions in there.

I vi IV V is a common one.
