THEDIGITALMONK'S PROFILE

I have a fairy in a cage next to my computer. I feed it peanuts and Diet Dr Pepper. When I want ideas, I beat it with a wooden paddle.

I pretty much only do music for games now. I have good ideas for story or gameplay every now and then, but I'm not good enough to make it happen. If you see me as the developer of a group game, you can rest assured that I'm doing the music and really just acting as a sounding board for the other developers.

A hiatus ending~!

soooo, why can't I get 2 pages of replies in 24 hours by making a post saying "hi"?

Best VG Soundtracks + overrated

Ya, I believe pretty strongly that having a musical background does not therefore give you more authority to say what is "good music" and what is "bad music." If you like a tune, then it's good, regardless of what the "elite" think.

So with that being said, I'm not trying to argue that it's wrong to like that SOTN tune, I'm just saying that it's really not all that particularly complex or notable.

Doesn't mean it's bad or good :)

I would have listed SotN too if it wasn't for this: playing for like half the game.
This is actually one of the most advanced instances of harmony in 20th century music. But I suppose a regular listener would not find it endlessly compelling, heh.

Just a couple things real quick...

Firstly, it's not even close to being an "advanced instance of harmony," especially when compared to other 20th century pieces, and secondly, if you're defining a "regular listener" as someone who doesn't have any musical experience (and that therefore they don't like the song) then I'll be the evidence against since I have to agree that the track isn't particularly great (and I'm a music major).

:P
Not trying to flame, just had to set that straight.

Classical Music that Pwns

I have a sort of pointless question. What defines a song as "classic"? *sorry for the noobness*

Well, you could interpret it 3 different ways. Firstly the "Classical Period" of music which centers around composers like Mozart, occurred from around 1700-1800. Now obviously, there's a lot more classical music than what was written in that hundred year span.

1600-1700: Baroque (Think Bach) Very mechanical and usually stoic.
1700-1800: Classical (Think Mozart) More emotional, but still 'plays it safe'
1800-1900: Romantic (Think Tchaikovsky) Much more openly emotional, not afraid to 'color out of the lines'
1900+: 20th Century (Think Stravinsky) Not afraid of dissonances and cacophony, often very wild and epic (both my examples from the top fall under this category). This category is most similar to what you'd hear in film scores.
1970ish+: Contemporary: Very very very dissonant and experimental... Often flat out difficult and uncomfortable to listen to.

So ALL of that counts as 'classical music' even though there was only a short "classical period."

It's probably the broadest genre of music out there believe it or not.

Added part 2.

Misaos

I would personally second that only completed games should be eligible... completed or cancelled. Basically, you get one bite at the apple.

Possible Idea: RMN Platinum (or something like that)

DigitalMonk, I am wondering if you know how the Misaos currently work...? I have no intention on bringing nominations back because it just seems like a wasted step. With THE POWER OF THE INTERNET and programming, I fail to see the need to make additional steps to get the net result.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but right now, you just (at some point during the year at your leisure) vote for different categories of games you like (by checking the boxes on their game page).

I just hope you're familiar with the phrase "spreading yourself too thin." If people directly vote for the awards without narrowing it down with nominations, you're going to end up with 30+ games in each category and the winner will only win with something like 10 votes. Just imagine if US elections were determined without a primary election first for each party to nominate a candidate. You go into the ballot and you have 20 people to choose from. Did we successfully eliminate an unnecessary step? You decide :P

It's a really simple fix. At the end of this year, take the games with the most votes in each category (I suggest 5) and have a runoff to determine the crowned winner of each category.

Possible Idea: RMN Platinum (or something like that)

maybe this rounding shenanigans can be discussed in a more appropriate thread? :D

So, I missed out on the Gamecube era...

Okay I can't believe I forgot one of the funnest games of that era: Simpsons Hit & Run

Man, I love that game. Mr. Plow! That's my name! That name again is Mr. Plow!

Oh man! Totally forgot that game was on gamecube. Not gonna lie, that game was a ton of fun. It's definitely a lot more fun if your'e a fan of the Simpsons though.

Paper Drafts

Very nice. You can see how fresh the screens look, they don't look like they were improvised in RM. That's the great thing about paper, you have no limitations. Let the limitations come after the creativity, not before.
