THEDIGITALMONK'S PROFILE

I have a fairy in a cage next to my computer. I feed it peanuts and Diet Dr Pepper. When I want ideas, I beat it with a wooden paddle.

I pretty much only do music for games now. I have good ideas for story or gameplay every now and then, but I'm not good enough to make it happen. If you see me as the developer of a group game, you can rest assured that I'm doing the music and really just acting as a sounding board for the other developers.

The one with the broccoli driving the car.... it says (more or less) "Would you rather be a broccoli driver or FIGHT DRAGONS!?!"

Not gonna lie... I would kinda rather play the broccoli car.

Misaos

So I know WIP isn't big on the whole idea of nominees for the Misaos, but if you would just hear me out for one quick little second, I've got some compelling thoughts.

There are hundreds of games that get released on RMN each year. I personally play only a few RM games per year. So with this in mind, it would be unfair to 95% of game makers out there if I voted in the Misaos. After all, how could I possibly know what the best game of the year is if I haven't played all 100? Who here has honestly played ALL of them? Maybe only a couple of us.

Now imagine for a second if there were 5-10 nominees. These would be chosen by either a preliminary popular vote, or by whatever means WIP deems reasonable. I would be able to play ALL 5-10 nominees and then make a confident choice as to what I think the best game of the year is.

Fame, Fortune, True Love

Well anyway, I don't think a couple ppl making jokes instantly taints a thread as being moronic and there's quite a bit of serious discussion to be had here, so if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to request that this gets moved back.

Fame, Fortune, True Love

mmm, didn't realize that this topic about life aspirations fell under "moronic." Maybe when it comes to general discussion, I should stick to srz bznss like video games.

Fame, Fortune, True Love

So this topic applies more to those of us who have yet to cement ourselves in the world...

Do you think you'll ever be famous?
Do you think you'll ever be rich?
Do you think you'll ever find true love?

I think there's a fairly good chance that I'll be famous to some degree, if not famous as a composer for hollywood or a big gaming company, then at least famous in my field. As for the wealth, this is very up in the air. Musicians are known for being dirt poor, but I think I'll be able to support myself and a family if I so choose. I think there is a decent chance however that I'll wind up making a handsome salary if I make it as a composer. As for true love, I think this is the least likely of the three to come true for me, even though it's probably the one I want most.

WIP music...

Consider building around phrases more. This track has a tendency to sort of float along without any beginnings or ends to phrases. Also, you might want to rewrite some of your melodic notes to fit better in the chords that you put below them. (Be more aware of which notes are dissonant and consonant, and try not to put the dissonant notes on beat one, or if you do, immediately resolve it to a consonant note).

it's heavily "inspired" by a game called Chip's Challenge.

When do you think is a good time to be able to change your party?

Maybe it's just me, but from someone who tends to make games that are very story heavy, it seems almost impossible to have a deep narrative if the player can choose who's in your party at what time. FF6 did this PERFECTLY when you can choose the 3 different scenarios (somewhat toward the beginning of the game), because at the end of that whole thing, you have enough characters for a good variety, but you've also bonded with each one and had a compelling story told specific to the characters, and you also get the sense of non-linearity and interactivity by choosing which scenarios to play first. Then at the end of it all (we'll pretend the game ends with that battle at narshe) you get to use all of them in a final series of battles, mixing and matching at your leisure. THAT is how it's done.

If you can choose your party for the bulk of the story, your'e going to end up with cookie-cutter dialogue for each character, and no one will really be able to impact the story at all (because as a game maker, you don't know which characters will be there, and therefore, can't structure the scene around them).

That's the perspective of someone who emphasizes storytelling in their games :P
