[Poll] RMN Birthday Event Ideas

The Trilogy one was 3 games made in 3 hours each, so 9 hours total. XD

If I run it in the future, it'd still be a short one. Like, no more than a week for each. Sweet, short trilogy of games. X3

yeah cash was saying that if he tried to squeeze trilogy into 3+3+3 it'd be on reduced time budget, but tbh 3 hours seems like the sweet spot for rushed brilliance. 9 hours makes me think I should be budgeting that time to my ''real'' project

I am also still in love with the Trilogy idea. The idea of cute mini trilogies excites me for some reason. However inappropriate it may be.

you could do your 3+3+3 game as three 'chapters' and make it its own trilogy !!

sadly 9 hours for 3 games sounds like more work than I want to do, personally

They didn't need entire cities. Everything else was meaningless.

Whoa what? Did we play the same game? Earthbound's funky charm COMES FROM all of that content. Who doesn't remember checking out the abandoned house and dreaming of buying it? Who didn't enjoy exploring the nooks and crannies of these weirdo places and interacting with the weirdo residents? They may not have added anything mechanically necessary, no battles or puzzles, but not every single part of your entire game needs to be Battles Or Puzzles Or Things To Do. Earthbound would not be Earthbound without its cities full of weirdo people to match the dungeons full of weirdo monsters.

Instead of a city with a landmark in it, just make the landmark and nothing else.
You're suggesting literally slicing everything but THE single most important feature in a city and I think that's tilting wayyyy to far to the side of "less effort for less effect"

I'm looking at a map and see a cafe, bakery, hotel and museum, all of which I'm positive were made up by photoshoppers at starmen.net and didn't actually exist in the game.

it's funny you use this example specifically as you're later teleported to Moonside which has slightly different roadblocks and architecture connections that turn the city map into its own puzzledungeon.

If I remember correctly, the "town" was actually just a location on the world map, and you could directly enter the houses from the world map. So the only effort spent on the town itself was placing down the houses on the overworld.

oh my god you're right

I think there's also a nice way to have a happy medium between a mapped town and a menu-only "town" -- you can still have a town map, and the screen pans around depending on which building you have selected on the menu. Thass what I'm doing. not spending hours in the map editor on it though so it will probably look like shit and i should quit now

corfaisus you're being a ~T R E M E N D O U S~ asshole by implying that because someone doesn't want to spend the rest of their lives working On Graphics that they're 'cutting corners.' If graphics aren't your strength, and therefore require more effort of you than of other people, it's MORE than intelligent and efficient to find a way of overcoming the effort involved than it is to spend ten years on graphics for a game you may not be passionate about in ten years. And it's absurd to expect everyone to master every aspect of game development as a solo game dev -- that's just not how it works except for a very talented few, not even in the real world. Essentially you're standing on top of maps that have taken you hours, even though you didn't actually MAKE any of the graphics involved (wow, such graphical skill and accomplishment, you spent hours in a map editor!!), and are telling everyone else that's the only way to do it. SPOILER ALERT: the amount of time you spend on something is NOT always directly proportionate to how good it is. I. can't. be. more. concise. than. this.

That is a really bad UI, jumbled around and full of useless information. I for one have always hated seeing someone's name on top of THEIR FACE, which shows you who they are! The HP and MP bars are poorly placed and you really don't need to write ACTIVE TIME out because, again, it instantly demonstrates itself for you by filling up that bar as your turn approaches. If you designed this yourself I'd take a second cleanup spin on it. If you didn't I'd find a new one

SgtMettool, I would consider setting the clock and other 'bouncing' sprites to be at a slightly different speed than the exclamation marks. It's very distracting to me, yet simultaneously makes them all blend together, to see the !s and the environmental objects bouncing to the same beat
