VOLRATH'S PROFILE

I'm a journalist/author with a fondness of RPG Making and an aversion to leaving projects unfinished - great for satisfaction, not so much for quantity. I'm married and live in Cromwell, CT with my wife, twin sons, and the dog.

Master of the Wind Review

Sorry to hear it pissed you off so much. Regarding the last paragraph, Cade's character arc through the entire game is about him realizing he doesn't know everything, it's a big world out there, and he should focus his efforts if he really wants to do good instead of just being angry about things. For what it's worth, I didn't interpret the skepticism of EK's multiple branches as a sure sign of evil. He just found it suspicious because this is the first "chain business" in the history of Solest.

Throughout the whole game, you also get a sense of Stoic's temper. The reason Shroud didn't call him out on the church burning comment is because he knows him enough to know that there was no chance he would actually do it. In other scenes, he makes all sorts of colorful threats of violence, sometimes just because he heard a pun that annoyed him. It's just a part of his personality.

At any rate, I'm glad you enjoyed the gameplay and I hope you do wind up continuing your game at some point. Even as early as Arc III, you'll see there's more going on in the story than what's been revealed during Arc II. It's obvious that I don't care for the Wal-Mart model of business, but it's also a mistake to assume that the characters are simply a mouthpiece for me, the author. I may agree with them on general principle, but I don't endorse all of Cade's rants and I always saw them as part of his character development.

World Remade

Thanks for the feedback. We don't plan on taking the game off the site anytime soon. In fact, this is the ideal time for this sort of thing since we're starting to get our bearings on what the full game will be like. Besides, everyone knows that when you get a review with a score you think is too low, you don't leave the site, you just get a friend to write a more positive one. ; )

About the characters, I see what you're saying and my only response would be that the three party members are all very engaged with the issues of their world. You could compare them to politically-minded friends who have no anxiety about discussing religious or race issues with strangers. In the full game, there will be other party members with different personalities and other concerns on their minds.

As for gameplay, we have a lot of ideas that we were not able to implement in time for the contest (even the combos barely got in there). AB's been posting some blog entries about what we hope to do so that should give you an idea of what the game might look like more refined. Thanks for playing!

X-Noir Complete

Also, one of the ending scenes I had in mind is not complete. Originally, there would be a computer screen as a background and characters would be speaking on some Skype-esque chat program. The characters were going to be represented by Ronove's full profiles instead of the cropped faces. For right now, however, still just dialogue.

World Remade

There will be more, it's just that the build that we're using for the contest is completed.

Master of the Wind Review

Wow, thanks! That's extremely flattering. I never knew Degica was directing new RMXP users to the game, I wonder if they recommend games in the same way for VX and Ace.

I tend to the think the game will show its age as the years go by and RPG Making gets more sophisticated, so it's nice to know that someone can play it (relatively) recently and still get a lot out of it. On the other hand, perhaps it will wind up being the most acclaimed thing I've worked on regardless of what I do since. I hope Project Kobold/Rain of Fire/World Remade can capture some of whatever we conjured up here.

X-Noir Near Completion

Please just don't feel like this game is not worth the effort. There are many people who are enthusiastic about X-Noir.

You've been a great supporter of all our work, but I have to admit I feel like if there are a lot of people who really enjoyed this one, they've kept pretty quiet.

I can think of a few things I could have done better with this one...it took me a long time to nail the mixture of seriousness and irony that I wanted (and some might argue that I still haven't figured it out). Having an intro that relies on a twist in Case 5 to congeal with the rest of the story might have been ill-advised. I also probably erred in regard to which characters are emphasized early on in the game...important ones like Regina Keller and Christina Vong probably should have been introduced earlier.

But despite that, I am pretty pleased overall with the story, characters and world. I feel like it's strong enough to support other games and indeed, already has. The whole reason Beth and Artie are in Labyrinthine Dreams is because I was reluctant to fully disengage from X-Noir when we were coming up with the idea. Leaving this story orphaned without an ending would have drove me nuts.

This one may always be the red-headed stepchild of Solest's body of work, but I think there are a lot of lessons from it that we can apply to future projects. And who knows, you guys may see Eddie Humphrey again someday...

Master of the Wind

Glad you liked it so much! We hope that our next Solest game, currently codenamed Project Kobold, will deliver much of that same experience but with a more developed battle system. Thanks for the kind words on MotW, glad people are still playing it and enjoying it.

Project Kobold VIP Access

You're good to go. We just get so many spammers that it's very hard to manage new members. For anyone else reading this who wants to join the forum, it's a good idea to reach out to us here and let us know your username so we can find you among the thousands of bogus accounts.

Project Kobold VIP Access

The solution is 3142...something tells me we should stay away from number puzzles in the new game.

Misaos results are in! Who won?

Wow, that Game of the Year result is something of an upset. I'm glad Homework Salesman won for gameplay mechanics, that one is VERY well deserved. Congrats to the winners!
