Hi I streamed this game on my Twitch channel if you're interested in some (slightly harsh) feedback.

Dude, I watched your video and loved it. "What is this, a game for sociopaths?" Hilarious stuff there.

And yeah, the beginning is fairly text-heavy, as this is a character-driven game with quite a bit of story, the biggest info dump being at the beginning of the game. I've been working on elongating dungeons to spread cutscenes further apart, but there are still quite a few in there.

The random japanese is an annoying little glitch that stems from one of the battle scripts I'm using. Hopefully I'll be able to track down the line of code responsible and take care of the problem.

Thanks for giving the demo a go and sharing that vid, Hunting Swan. I hope you'll give the full version a spin once it's completed.

Finally Completed

A bug or two isn't the end of the world, unless it's completely game breaking. What's really great is that years down the road, you can open up this game, replay it for the 257th time and say to yourself "Aww yeah, I made that!" You set out to complete this game, and you saw the journey through to the end. Like Marrend said, that itself is something to be proud of.

Being the villain

Yo jstomp, thanks for your honest opinion, every little bit helps! Yeah, the biggest struggle I've been having with this game is balancing the gameplay with the sheer amount of story there is. The initial woods area could afford to be a few maps longer in order to spread some more gameplay between cutscenes. Dungeon mapping is my biggest weakness and the bane of my existence, and as a result, the dungeon length is pretty abyssmal (see what I did there?). Maybe I'll jump back in there and stretch out Palnea woods a bit more.

I wanted to cement the characters' personalities from the get-go, so unfortunately I can't think of any scenes I could trim without hurting their characterization. Maybe that snippit about saving can be removed. I mean everyone knows to save regularly in an rpg, right? Right. Spacing out the cutscenes a bit more should help as well. Time to conquer my dungeon mapophobia!

Honestly I am taken aback by the positive feedback concerning the visuals and battles. I never expected to receive such high praise. I'm glad you're enjoying the battles, as I consider them the cornerstone of what makes an rpg fun. As you may have noticed, I like flashy attacks and battles with a lot of razzle-dazzle, so there's sure to be plenty of that. Rest assured, there are many more epic bosses to come.

Thanks again for your input, I'll be using it to help sharpen this game into the best it can be!

Being the villain

Hey, I'm all about feedback bro! Thanks for your time and have fun.

Umbral Soul Review

Wow Starmage, I'm not quite sure what to say. I'm overjoyed that you enjoyed the demo this much!

Truth be told, I originally had no intention of releasing this project to the public. It was only ever meant to be a game for my personal enjoyment. The mapping was big and empty, and the overall feel of the game was less than polished. However, thanks to the encouragement of a friend, I decided to take the plunge, sharpen it up, and go public with it.

I learned better mapping techniques, fooled around with a long list of scripts and put more care into the eventing. A lot of what I learned came from the good folks here at rmn, be it through playing the games of others or reading tutorials. I owe my growth as an amateur game developer to rmn and my buddy, so I want to take this time to thank you all.

All of the words of encouragement have been a big help to me, and some constructive criticism never hurts either. Development is going stronger than ever, so I'll be working to make the rest of this game worthy of that rather gracious 5 star rating. Thanks for the review, Starmage!

If I might add a suggestion, you can take the bust images of the characters and crop them, then resize them to the dimensions of the character faces. There's a variety of free online image editing programs that allow you to do this, two of my favorites being FotoFlexer and BeFunky. That way, your characters faces will remain the same both in cutscenes and in battle. Hope that helps!

Oh, and also...KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Nice, this is much cleaner than the previous image. Let's give it up for terrorchan!

Being the villain

Heh heh, I hear ya jstomp, I hear ya. I knew there'd be a demographic that just wanted to get down to the nitty gritty, so I made the prologue optional.Just one button press, a short conversation to set up your first goal, a battle tutorial and BOOM! You're off to the races. There's also a script in there that skips all the dialogue when F7 is pressed,so you can get right to the point.

The mandatory cutscenes aren't too terribly long (we aren't talking xenogear levels here), and I attempted to make them interesting enough to hold the player's attention, though I suppose that's more a matter of taste. The gallery cutscenes are optional and aren't necessary to understand the storyline at all, so you can just gloss right over them with no problem. Thanks for your input buddy!

EDIT: Hey there BerryRMN, thanks for giving the game a shot! Yeah, I wish I could have peppered Pandora's past into the story in bite sized chunks, but sadly there was no room for it. Many of the major story segments focus on a single character, so I didn't give myself much wiggle room to slip anything else in there. Bah, hindsight!

Blast, now I'm curious as to what you think the ending will be! Oh well, that's just a bit more motivation to get this game done! Hopefully you'll find the journey to the grand finale an enjoyable one. Thanks so much for the feedback guys.

Progress Report Demo 0.5 - Finalization

Both huds are quite nice, but I prefer the first image to the second. Those magic marker-looking Hp, Mp, and Tp numbers blend in with the hand-drawn art aesthetic very well.(adjusts monocle) Not only that, but it adds an additional splash of color to the battles, as the second hud appears to be transparent.
