There's the Nue whom you fight 'cause it's terrorizing a farm or something, and then you learn it was just trying to feed its young, there's the ghosts of McNeil's ancestors who attack you because you broke into his mansion... there's the guys you fight in the tournament (including Garr who later joins), there's the multiple fights with Balio and Sunder culminating in a final battle against their fused form, Garr again, the crime lord in Sin City, the weird guy who was trying to revive his dead wife, Garr's friend, the old dragon lord guy, Teepo, and of course Myria.

that final fight against Balio and Sunder was damn frustrating, since you finally beat them after they'd been screwing things up for you since the first few hours of the game, and then they just die like any other enemy in the game and are forgotten from then on. BoF IV twists the knife even further, though, by never even letting you fight the villain who screws your party over... goddamnit, Yuna.

I think the Breath of Fire series has always been pretty good at mostly averting that sort of shit.

Okay well I guess I mostly mean BoF III and IV. I actually can't remember the bosses in I and II very well, except for the hard ones.

If we're just talking ONE boss fight that's particularly memorable, Giygas in Earthbound was a big one for me. In part because Earthbound was my first RPG. His final form was rather terrifying.
