M.O.G. Graphics
If you're doing retro graphics where you only use three colors per 8x8 cell (plus background), you should pattern-dither-shade the graphics. That makes it more authentic. Artists used to pattern-dither-shade things to take advantage of how blurry CRTs were, it would result in a new color. The SUNSOFT Batman NES game is one of the best examples of using almost no color variation to produce lots of shapes and color variation.
And yes, just have a black screen with the graphics on it. The RTP backgrounds and system clashing with the retro graphics make everything leap straight into your eyes and have a deathmatch.
Consider posting your graphics with a scanline CRT post-filter too.

Revive the Dead
I've worked on games and game engines for 12~13 years and computer science for 7 years, but I've only just now been able to get close to actually finishing something (and likewise, finally had peer review science literature published a few weeks ago).
I'm going to tell each and every one of you here not to feel bad that you don't finish anything as long as you don't stop altogether.

Tell us a little about why you dropped the project/ideas originally
I wrote an explanation on July 6th, 2012.
What is not said there is I also assumed EasyRPG would have taken up their banner to the finish line. Not only that, EasyRPG still has/had project conversion from RPG Maker 2003.
But
and why you decided on this project/idea to work on.
They have not.
Nothing has changed about me having lots of research to do, and I'm even busier than before. However, I took my own advice and decided to create a standalone RPG creation kit that does it right. Nobody has yet - there is still a significant population of RPG Maker 2003 users. I've got to do this after all.
That's actually a decision made in January, I am here in this event to see how much I can accomplish before the 30th. I've got detailed software requirements right here that I can use to prove if I have accomplished the task or not. It's to see how fast I can go.
Will I make it? Let's see.
(I'm also doing the draw-your-own-stuff thing at the same time since I can't proceed in features without doing so).
