RMN sucks 5

Thanks for the info. I think I'll give this another download and playthrough. I don't think it's necessary to have all the information in the game on how the controls work, but perhaps a word document would suffice. You could even add a category to this posting as well between Images and Download called Controls. This way if people forget, they can always reference back here.

Now that I know how the bombing system works, I have to say it's ingenious. It reminds me of all the things I liked about NES without including all the things I hated (randomly placing and wasting bombs).

One thing to note, I hope getting rupies will be easier as you progress. I was trying to get what I think is the pulling bracelet early on, but it's so darn expensive.

Good luck with this.

RMN sucks 5

I tried the demo, and I have to say I like how this is coming out. It attempts to recapture the NES classic without being entirely like it. A few things, though. The beginning guy that you talk to that tells you how to access the menu and use the sword, parts of his dialogue gets cut off. I wasn't sure what the purpose of the leveling system was, as there didn't seem to be any indication of stat increases, and hearts and weapons appear to be typical Zelda style, which means you find hearts to increase health, and you solve puzzles to gain items and stronger weapons. I wouldn't have found out about the leveling up system if I wasn't going around attacking enemies. Maybe I'm missing the point, or haven't progressed far enough, but is there a reason to the level up system? I found the bombs, but for some reason I couldn't use them. The menu said to use SHIFT, but when I accessed the bombs, and then pressed SHIFT on the worldmap, nothing happened. So I didn't get too far in the demo. Otherwise, good job so far.

Megan Hunter's Worst Nightmare

Well, the image portraits (or facesets) are not included with XP by default. They have to be scripted. And even then, you will have to find somebody that has already created them specifically for XP (which I believe is easy enough to find by searching Google). But that's not too big of a problem for me, as I'm on the fence with facesets. On the one side, they look cool, if you can create various forms of expressions (which VX does not do by default), but not including them allows the player to picture the scene and facial in his mind.

A Home Far Away

Ditto, I'm not a girl either. Started playing this the other day and in Montrose Town now. I'm enjoying it a lot.

Sacred Remnant

I've been checking up on this for awhile, glad to hear it's coming out soon. I'm kind of busy myself, but I usually have plenty of time over the weekends, so if you need another beta tester, just let me know.

Tales of the Drunken Paladin: Version 3 Review

I haven't played this yet, but I'm all for a game that tends to poke fun at itself and still have a good time. I'm still laughing my ass off at the level design screenshot. I'm okay with swearing and the like in video games as long as it's done right, and here it seems to be done right. I'd probably be saying the same thing if I saw a passage like that. I ask that about half the streets in my city.

RE:Alistair++ Review

Okay, yes I'm a guy, I played through this, and I enjoyed it to some extent. It was a nice departure from the traditional RM formula. But now I think I need to play a game with a bit more brawn, and maybe a bit of blood and gore, to remind myself I'm still a man. Although my wife would probably laugh at me if she saw me playing this.

But in any case, I agree with this review 100%. It's almost like Solitayre was reading my mind. So, I didn't think it was needed to rehash the same thing in a separate review, and decided to just comment instead. I, too, have never played a dating sim before. In that case, I never played through a visual novel before, either. It was different, and I enjoyed it as a complete sit through.

I do agree that it gets very repetitive, which is the weakest part of the game. Quite often, nothing happened as you went from day to day. And some parts were so repetitive to the point I was able to speed through some days faster than others, which is why I probaby was able to complete it in one sitting. I stumbled upon the perpetrator by accident by the luck of a scene, but I kind of figured out who it was based on the personality of the characters you meet. Still, anybody wanting to play through all scenarios, make sure to save on the 30th day, sometime before you have to guess the person.

None of your choices throughout really makes a difference to the outcome, but it was still fun to play through once. Hopefully somebody else can use Renpy and create more visual style novels, it'd be fun to see what somebody else can come up with. An actual fantasy adventure instead of a dating sim next time, perhaps?

A Hand From Beyond the Grave

I'm going to take a stab here (and risk the necropost) to say this game probably will never see the light of day. Which is unfortunate, because it truly is a unique concept. I didn't want to do a full review (I don't like to review demos as they resemble an unfinished product), so this was the next best place for comments.

First the cons: The balance is horrid. You start at level 1 and need 1100 to get to level 2. Your weak. Enemies more often than not will wound you, of which you need a bandage to heal in and out of battle. Bandages are rare and very expensive. At that you get so litle stat increases when you level up, and you are by yourself. No allies to join you. To counter this, I opened this in the game engine, fixed the XP rate, adjusted the curve of stat increases, and added a healing spot on one of the maps. In addition, only the menu command works. Status and Monster Skills result in having to reset the game. Not enough of the story to wet my appetite. Story is very important, especially when it's a demo, because you want to raise the curiosity of others to continue playing when (if) the final version comes out. You don't have to reveal too much, though, but I think a little more story would have helped. And finally, I played until I entered the city but could progress no further, as if I ran out of maps. No warning that the demo had ended.

Now the pros: Very unique concept and gameplay. In spite of the lack of story, the game felt creepy all the way. The music and sound effects are enough to make you feel uneasy. The writing (in spite of misspellings and grammatical errors) was good. Enemies can be seen and avoided or fought, which allows the player to make decisions as to whether or not to engage in battle, but the closer you get to the enemy the enemy will start to follow and attack you.

Since it's been almost 2 years since the last update, I doubt we will ever see a finished product, which is unfortunate because, as I've said in my intro, this game has a unique concept. However, unless the poor leveling system is fixed, stats are better adjusted, and status effects like wound and poison are balanced properly, this game may not garner much attention even in its final form.

Erova

I don't know about the worst game I ever played. That award has to go to "The Worst RPG Ever" by Cynon.

Wanderer's Path

Well, considering that it only went up today about a half hour before your posting, people probaby haven't had time to comment. In any case, I lik the mapping of the one and the menu of the other screenshot, but there's not a whole for me to go on. A couple more screenshots showing other places, and a video that does more than show off the game menu, would make a difference.
