what the heck!

Comic Chat

at last a way to live out my jerkcity cosplay fantasies

Favorite Dr. Who Doctor and Episode?

Whoa hell yeah! Lets have a whochat.

When I was a kid my dad would rent videotapes of old Doctor Who shows, usually from the Tom Baker period. Some were great (City Of Death!) and some were kind of boring but every one had at least one moment which would absolutely terrify me and make me lose sleep. I am of the firm conviction that for everyone who watched old Doctor Who as a little kid there was at least one moment which mentally scarred them for life and I think this is the greatest service that family programming can provide. Mine were

- Genesis Of The Daleks when there's some closet filled with uh germ warfare?? in the dalek base and the doctor walks in and staggers out covered in horrible green seaweed things aaaaa

- Horror Of Fang Rock THE ENTIRE THING holy shit. it was this very claustrophobic thing that all happened in an isolated lighthouse surrounded by thick fog. it was menaced by an electric monster that killed you if you touched it! my chief memory was of this huge glowing green blob slowly creeping up the lighthouse stairs and there was no other way down and they were forced to retreat to the very top. it freaked me out because my room was on the first floor and there was only one stairs down and if a blobmonster rolled up then----!

- The Seeds Of Time: the first section of this took place on an arctic base where the scientists had uncovered this strange plantseed thing which turned them into plantpeople. it was basically THE THING with some david cronenberg thrown in. i was too terrified to finish watching it but i remember obsessing over the back of the box where it showed one of the plantmen looming at the camera and in the background was buckingham palace or something and all the signs seemed to indicate a plantmen takeover of earth!!

A little later the local irish language channel (a haven for bizarre programming choices!) started broadcasting episodes from the Jon Pertwee run. Maybe it was the fact that it was in black and white and that he was older / sterner and the whole thing was part of running plot of the master's attempts to rule the earth iirc but it always seemed a lot grimier and more menacing! there was an appeal to that although i never got to watch a lot of it. it was always incredibly cool to be flicking between channels and suddenly hear insane bbc radiophonic orchestra music pop out too

this is the best. throbbing gristle doff caps in awe jesus christ

edit: ps i have a huge crush on delia derbyshire (who did the original theme song)

this is begging to be sampled in a hiphop song

you can just put it on gamejolt / mediafire or something and post it in this thread. if the thread no longer exists you can take it that the deadline has passed!

edit: also saying the deadline is a month from now doesnt mean the expected time to finish should be a month; thats just the point beyond which it is no longer possible to actually post games here. the idea is to get one last game done before this happens!

valedictory gamemaking drive

sure why not. just as long as you get it out there in time pal!!

So who's up for this

I was thinking about this sites closure and decided that the most important thing about RMN for me was how it consistently got me up off my ass to actually make and release games. Whether for Action 52 or Shinan's contest or the various seasonal gamemaking contests I pretty consistently had a blast in trying to put together and release something under a deadline while also seeing what the other cool_dudes taking part would come up with. I think even beyond forumchats and recieving crits etc this kind of activity was what attracted me most to the site and was actually what made me join in the first place! And I thought it would be a fitting farewell kinda to use the forums closure as yet another excuse to hunker down and be productive.

So yeah if anyone is interested the aim is to release a full game before the forum implodes. This gives you a month!! to get something out. so you have until april 2.

If anyone's interested in judging what gets released etc then we can make an actual contest out of this sucker. It's not an official contest or whatever. You can use any engine or materials etc so 'go ape' as they say.

Themes are optional but in case you need one I would suggest: RAD DOGS

- ???YOURNAMEHERE???

where will you be going when rmn shuts down?

whoa i didn't know it was shutting down. but yeah saltworld 4 life

So, Final Tear 3

i was almost certain i played this once. the intro was kind of boring but then there was a bit where you team up with this random dwarf who only says two lines to you and need to explore a "mummy cavern" (actual phrase) filled with kobolds and ghastly spooks. i thought that was pretty excellent / the true sense of someone just having fun mucking around in rpgmaker holy moley. on the other hand i haven't seen anyone mention it so i guess i was thinking of a different game all along! this is me contributing.

edit: it was possibly one of the vacant sky games actually or just LONG COMPLETED GAME (there cant be to many of them around here ha ha ha n___n')

Americana Dawn

this looks crazy. symbolic anime retelling of american war of indepence with chapter headings taken from william blake. also taking the generic rpgmaker structure of jrpg warriors stabbing each other in volcanos etcetera and hollowing it out to use as a vehicle for bizarre elaborate political allegory is a pretty great idea i think.
