Which came first: The Story or the Gameplay?

In my actual projects i use both. I try to that gameplay and history are fully and nicely merged.

Anyway i never created nothing with the idea in mind first; what im talking is that my creative process is based in improvitzation. Example:

My Metal Gear Solid game evolved from the thought of what a Metal Gear/The Legend of Zelda gameplay-hybrid would turn out like.
The story was built into it after.

I never do something like this,xD. I have only one project that starts with the idea that 'i want to talk about X or do Y'...

I just create one little thing here and there, and all the thing grows but without a fixed way... normally i discover the main theme of the project when a lot of time have passed.

Games that have stood the test of time?

Shining Force 1 and 2 are still really great Tactical RPGs nowadays!

2 maybe, 1 is mediocre, although fun.

Lowering your standards and finishing your game

I totally suck at doing practical things.

Krya: This game started 9 years ago. XD. In that time rpg2k crashed in my computer, so i couldnt make it. Also i didnt have internet. Later i had another PC, but without sound. 5 years ago i bought my own PC with my money. The project was revamped and make some things, anyway, i was too lazy and also i have been in a personal crisis in the later years.

Two years ago i recovered rpgmaking, recopile info and writed a 200 pages design document. I started own grafics, etc. But something is wrong. 7 years are too long. The stuff i created when i had 14 years now sucked. The other stuff didnt suck, but it wasnt too god, with some exceptions(i have created some things that i think still today are brilliant, some of they with 15-16 years). I have disconnected with the project. I also have to add a lot to filler to it: in origin, it was a novel, so i hadnt the videogame pace.

Too problems. There are 3 masive reestructures. I give up in a few months. My actual plan is to take the good things of that history and make it the centrl idea of a new, venn if this broke all the old argument, but this will be in a ot of time.

Dreamwreckers: I started this game 2 years ago with simplicity and improvitzation in mind. But the project grows and grows, and now it have a 250pag design document and 0 maps. 2k to XP.

Linnilean: 1 year ago. The idea was to improvize and start nice but my pc fails for two months, and dome other life problems amke that i forgot it. 2k to xp.

???: This summer. The same premise, t grows, but ot at all. 2k to XP. Now im trying to start doing some practic things.

Yes. I have writed like 600 pag about games but the actual one is at 1%,maybe, xd.

Too bad. Im started to think im a natural dreamer or something.

If you liked his second game, the first is also very good. The problem is that is still ionly in spanish, too bad. I think it have true potential... i played it two times.
What game are you talking about?

The game is called The Observer and have the same style, just more 'begginer'. Anyway, i like more the history of this, the good thing of dhux is that erliex have improved all his habilities, but the argument dont surpass it, at least for me.

Also the gameplay is more simple, but it have a lot of characters to play. It dont use custom tilesets or enemies, and it isnt that hard. Anyway, its brilliant.

Here is a download. http://www.hellsoft.net/hellsoft-web/index.php?option=com_remository&func=fileinfo&id=178&Itemid=54

Maybe you canask he for a traduction or something.

If you use a custom font that looks the way you want at the size you want, then RMXP won't anti-alias anything because it won't be enlarging or shrinking anything.

It has to be a Truetype font, though. RMXP won't use VGA res fonts for some reason. This makes it a lot harder to find one, since most "crappy" fonts are not Truetype.

ok, i will try this

As for the font, you have to get a custom font that looks like you want at the size you want it and package it with your game.
Yeah, but RMXP automatically anti-aliased. I believe there is a code snippet to change this very easily, unfortunately I'm not a scitper so I can't help.

With the resolution and tile size, what you need to do is double the size of each tile and half the resolution. I'll try and find a resolution script for you. (or you could Google it!)

anybody knows more?

You're going to have to scale it yourself since the resourcer handles the stuff on a 32 32 sized grid. It's what I do. As for the font, you have to get a custom font that looks like you want at the size you want it and package it with your game.

then its posible, thanks

I want to use old fashioned grafics, i know i can scale the graphics, but anyway im asking for resolution scripts or some game that does this nice as example.

An other thing is the smooth that XP does to fonts, and the way these are drawn, because they arent pixelated, no?

Sorry for my bad english.

What Makes Stereotypical jRPGs Terrible?

I agree.

I think its a matter of history density. I don't think it goes only by genres, but by gameplay styles. Is true that Super Mario Bros can't have a top history, but in their way, it can be improved and tested to their limits.

I think a good example of this is Alundra versus The Legend of Zelda. I think Alundra is in the limit of genre/style densitiy and also is better than medium zelda in overall story.

The same can be applied to RPG's. Every formula have a density limit, you can't make a pokemon with a large argument, for example. But in this limit, the history can be good or bad.

Actually the problem is not that i'm looking for storys (i normally play only for gameplay), but that they cross the density limit (the gameplay is poor and a simple filler between scenes) and the quality of the story is bad. If they only give me story, and this is mediocre...xD. I have played some games only for their story, like Dreamfall or FFX. But they are the only exceptions.

Dreamfall for example is a good example of what modern JRPG can become if they only want to tell a story. I hate combats and dungeons in these games, when i love the same things in 8 and 16 bits rpg (and less 32), why? Because nowadays, generally and not only in RPG's, gameplay is story filler...
