What annoys you in a game?

I'm guilty of some of the stuff mentioned in here so far, but not much of it. These are the kinds of things I try to keep in mind when I'm making my games.

As for the things I hate, well...

I hate it when descriptions of spells or items don't help or are nonexistant. I sometimes see these flashy descriptions given to weapons and spells that are supposed to be cool, but it doesn't actually tell me anything about what the does! Take a fire spell, for example, with a description that says "Burns an enemy with fiery wrath." All I get out of that is its a fire attack and it hits one foe. How powerful is it? Can it cause a status problem? Is there any accuracy involved?

While we're on the subject of elements, I hate it when they're present but meaningless. There's usually the basics like Fire, Ice, and Lightning, but it's almost impossible to tell what monsters are vulnerable to what elements, and by the time you figure it out, you could've stabbed them all to death anyway.

And, on the subject of enemies, I hate it when enemies are so weak that they go down in one hit. This really bothered me in the early Final Fantasies (1&2), where eventually, a good swordsman can take down a baddy in a single blow. Then, they compensate for the enemies' survival chances by putting them in huge groups and making their attack power unreasonably high.

I also hate useless status problems. Refer again to FF2. I once leveled up one of the status effect spells to a very high level, and cast it at a group of about six monsters. One of them was affected, and the spell wore off the very next turn. Meanwhile, my other party members had managed to one-shot the rest of the buggers anyway. It's not like status effects have to be useless, just sometimes people are so worried about game balance that they nerf things beyond any usefulness whatsoever!

There's other stuff I hate about RPGs, but I'll leave it at that for now.

Touche. I understand what you guys are saying, and no, I don't have any experience to back up my opinions on the matter. It still doesn't change how I feel about it, though.

The truth is, I have too much respect for women to just try and get in their pants. Call me what you will, but it's my belief and I'm not forcing it on you guys.

Is sex great? Probably, I've never tried it. Is there more to life than sex? Without a doubt.

The only hypothetical question that matters...for game developers who are also grownups.

In the unlikely event that I could be hired for a job in the videogame industry, it all depends on pay, job description, location, how the economy looks, and for good measure, pay.

The economy isn't too friendly for the videogame industry at the moment. This christmas is going to be dismal, that's for sure, with less people spending and less disposable income being thrown around.

You'd really have to ask me a more specific question to get a more specific answer, to be honest.
Basically, this, but I'm going to assume some pretenses for this job offer and say HELL, YES!

If a developer came to me because of something I made, I would be more than thrilled. Game making is something I would love to make a career out of, and for someone to come to me one day and just open the door to the industry for me would be too good an opportunity to pass up.

*HOWEVER*

Coming back to reality, here, I recognize that the chances of this are slim to none. Oh, sure, I've made a few RPGs, but, I mean, look at them. There's a reason why I'm not that popular, and appearances mean everything in today's world (no matter how much I disagree with it). This is why I didn't put all my eggs in the game dev basket.

I'm going to college for an Accounting degree. It's a high-demand field that gives pretty decent pay. I'll always be able to make games on my compy, no matter what kind of job I find. So, if something comes of my creations in the future, then...great! If no, then at least I have something successful to work with if/when that day comes.

I'm realistic and optimistic. ;)

I hope you give people who you feel are "below your standards" a shot one day. Someone might genuinely surprise you.
It's not so much a standard as it is criteria for getting along with me. I'd like someone on or around my intellectual level (oy, that sounds pompous), but as long as they don't have $h!+ for brains and have similar interests, it could work out. But, I only met one like that, and she moved away a long time ago...

And...wait, before I go on, are you a male or a female?

I'm a dude.

And if you think sex isn't worth doing, you're either doing it wrong, or you're Isaac Newton.

And, apparently, Issac Newton John Stuart Mill. I'm of the opinion that sex is one of the more basic pleasures in life, and that there are things that can be done that are far more fulfilling.

And you're 22 and you... well, it's commendable that you're saving yourself, but have you not tried asking someone out? I know a lot of people believe the "right one" will just come to them and all, but one look at our divorce ratio should dispell that notion quick.

No, I haven't asked anyone out before, but I've also never met anybody I would really consider a serious relationship with. I have some rather steep criteria for a person I'd want to get involved with, especially since I'm not looking for sex (and, as Feld has implied, that's the defining feature between 'friends' and 'partners').

Also, I wouldn't feel right going out looking for one-night stands, either. Sure, there's a supposedly mutual gratification thing there, but I'd feel like I was using them, and I'd be similarly subjecting myself to be used as well! The moral implications are too much for me, and it's just something I wouldn't do.

Maybe it's my strict upbringing speaking, but I do think sex is overrated, and I won't engage in it just for the sake of "getting some."

Mystery Science Let's Play 3000 featuring NightBlade...that's even better!

RM RPGs...you have beaten

NightBlade's "Let's Play: Everything" YouTube extravaganza! I can see it now...

I don't have a very impressive list of indie games I've played or beaten, so I'm not going to bother disclosing them. Most of them came from Release Something and Play Something days, anyway.

Suzuricho, the similarities between you and I are uncanny. Your perspective of what relationships are and/or should be match mine to the letter! We're even the same age! o.O

Personally, I feel I can only have sex with a girl I truly care for. Guess that makes me a self-righteous arsehole XD Those are the principles and morals I've had instilled in me for years. I just won't have any sexual relations with a girl I don't care about. Not gonna force it on anyone else though.
I feel this way, too.

(And if something is psychologically wrong with someone to make them not want sex, it is just as likely to be a guy as a girl.)
I also fit into this category. Maybe it's because I've never had sex before, but I simply don't see the point in getting together with someone just for the physical gratification. It just seems too shallow!

Remarkable lines of some video games.
