Game Design Discussion of the Week: Status Effects

I think status problems are overlooked a lot in RPGs. I can still remember a time in Final Fantasy 2 when I used a high-level all-hitting Stun spell on a big group of common monsters. About a fourth of them got stunned, and they all recovered the very next turn. Meanwhile, the same character who cast the spell could've one-shotted them with a physical attack just as easily. Ugh...

I've tried to make status problems more significant in my games. There's a fairly wide variety of them, although most still fall under the categories Kentona mentioned. I try to make them more useful by actually having monsters vulnerable to them and making their effects greater and longer-lasting. Weaker status effects have a 1 in 2 chance of wearing off each turn in battle, whereas stronger ones only wear off 1 in 4. Also, all common enemies have a 1 in 2 chance of being afflicted by a status problem, but minibosses only have a 1 in 4 chance (and bosses are immune!). Heroes are also affected 1 in 2 times, but they can cure most things with a few healing spells or select healing items. I don't make as many items as there are status problems, though. I only make items for the ones that don't wear off quickly, and throw in the expensive cover-all Miracle Cure for the rest.

So far, it's worked out pretty well. It's easy to nerf a status problem so much that it stops being a hindrance at all, and that's what I try to avoid. Sure, they might upset the game balance, but...aren't they supposed to shake things up anyway?

I don't know how, but you manage to get less and less atractive women with every new avatar. I don't know if it's just the pose or what, but you've never quite matched that first chick. ??? 5/10...

RPG bosses...

Game balance is tricky to pull off, but you don't have to max the final boss' stats just to make them difficult. I use stat charts for my monsters that I created by mimicking the stat balance of RPG Maker's most basic monster: slime. While that's worked very well for me, I'd have to completely rethink it if I was using 2K3 instead. I feel that the bigger the numbers get, the harder they are to manage.

As for pacing of big villains, well...I'm not so sure about that. Introducing them at the game's start can work well for motivation (so the player knows what they're up against and why). Having them make unexpected appearances can also be interesting. However, if you choose the path where the big bad isn't revealed until the very end, you may want to consider using foreshadowing of their efforts behind the scenes.

Now, about cutscenes, DON'T PUT LONG CUTSCENES BEFORE BOSS FIGHTS! NEVER EVER EVER!!! There's nothing worse than losing a tough battle after watching people talk for ten minutes. If you have to do this, then make a way to skip the cutscene before the fight. Or, even better, separate the two events and let the player save after the cutscene but before the fight so they can prepare better if they must.

Dialogue is what will make or break your cutscenes, but don't be overly dramatic with it. If you want an example of what not to do with dialogue, play Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden. This game shows what happens when you over-dramatize everything. I think the key to making a good cutscene involves both the things you said: detail/emotion along with quick/to the point. Don't mince words...say what must be said, and don't use too many frills. Above all with cutscenes, make sure the dialogue sounds natural, like something someone would actually say. If you're not sure about it, read what you wrote out loud and think of how it would sound if someone said it to you.

Hope that helps.

halibabica's All-Star Mode: a challenge to all Brawl players!

Mostly the save point and all the hit and run stuff. Of course, they're perfectly valid tactics, I just don't like them (b/c I'm bad at fighting on Green Hill Zone).

THE BOTTOM LINE: 185/400

Not bad, not bad at all! You're Ike is unbelievably hard to fight! You tended to abuse his side-B a lot, but it worked most of the time anyway. As Sonic, you made really good use of speed (although I didn't care for some of your tactics on the Green Hill Zone >:(). Your Lucario wasn't too shabby, but it felt like you didn't really have a strategy with him. Of course, that can be a good thing, too!

I'm really glad you stuck it out to the end, even after we got disconnected. Thanks for Brawling, you're pretty tough!

halibabica's All-Star Mode: a challenge to all Brawl players!

Sounds good. I'll see about organizing one with you after I finish with Quiversee today. Even easy schedules can be tricky to maneuver!

NO. Nonononononononononononono. It's Super Metroid's Brinstar, so NYEEAAA. Besides, Zero Suit Samus would fry without her Varia suit. She's better off in the Frigate, even if it doesn't make sense (and yes, I know the reasoning doesn't make sense either!).

Top Ten Topic: Favorite Video Game Villains

My favorites...I'll do ten of them, but in no particular order.

Bowser - Mario's arch-enemy just never knows when to quit. He might be a complete moron, but he's just an abominably tough guy! Or at least, he looks that way...

Ganondorf - I don't think I could personify evil any better than him. With his underhanded tactics and insatiable lust for power, he just defines villainy to me.

Lavos - As a villain, he's fairly innactive. But what makes him cool to me is how he plays a role in everything by hardly doing anything at all. His presence on the planet alone is enough to make him a force to be reckoned with.

Dr. Robotnik - And none of this "Eggman" crap, either! I never really understood his motive, but anyone with the technical skills and innovation he possesses can make for a very unique, ever-changing enemy. I can't think of many others who can match his versatility.

Sirius - Though many of you may not know him, he was secretly the main villain in Bomberman 64. He fed you lies the whole game to get you to help him while he, in turn, helped you. Then, in what might have been the final act, he betrays you and assumes the role of the enemy you just defeated! Maybe it's because I was younger when I played the game, but I love to hate him for that.

Regulus - Yet another Bomberman 64 enemy. He works for the supposed main bad guy, but helps Bomberman after Sirius takes over. In spite of this, he still hates Bomberman's guts (for beating him) and remains his eternal rival. He was never quite a friend, and always ready for a fight. Too bad he disappeared off the face of the series...

Raem - All you Final Fantasy fans rave about greats like Kefka and Sephiroth, but in Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, this guy tormented the world in a way those two could never hope to! He's a demon that feeds off of memories. He doesn't need to eat much to survive, but he's both a glutton and a connoissuer. And painful memories are always the tastiest, so making people suffer just makes his meals more delicious...just imagine, losing your memories forever...

Gruntilda - The main villain of Banjo-Kazooie. She's crude, wicked, and delightfully evil. Her character quirks make her a lot more interesting, and her occasional taunts to the player are always good for a chuckle.

Mother Brain - I never beat the original Metroid (too crappy), so I'm talking about her Super Metroid incarnation. In addition to being the center of the Space Pirate's operations on Zebes, I respect her just for her sheer unfathomable power. She's way over 9000, and Samus would've been screwed if it weren't for her Metroid buddy.

The Doctor - Cave Story's own 2nd biggest bad guy. He reminds me of a more intellectual Ganondorf. He makes systematic and cunning decisions to elevate himself straight to the top, and I admire that kind of ambition in villains. Beats the hell of all the ones that are just bat-crazy!

And that's all ten...I was hard-pressed to come up with that many. Hmm...I should play more games.
