Best video games you've played this year

Devil May Cry 4. This game wins by so far that it's silly. If you like video games at all you owe it to yourself to try DMC 4!

Lost Odyssey is pretty good too.

Chapters of the Chosen, and Japan gets DQ5 this summer (UPDATE: SO DO WE ON SEPT. 16th)

Jesus I want this to be DQ4's subtitle so badly. I cut myself every night just to let the pain out because I can't deal with not having this game.

It makes sense: it has been demonstrated that selling a game in an English-speaking territory with a colon and a subtitle is significantly more profitable than not (ie the difference between DQ4 and DQ4: Chapters of the Chosen). This is probably why DQ8 was called DQ8:Journey of the Cursed King.

Experimenting with something other than RTP for once.

I have seen those tiles before. I like them a lot because they are so muted and squarish. I like when games don't pretend that they aren't tiled with confusing, grid-breaking tiles like Final Fantasy 6 and instead embrace their boxiness, making the most out of a little.

Top Ten Topic: Consoles!

Man I don't even know if I have owned ten platforms in my life. Well I guess I will list everything I have ever had and just rank them:

1. Playstation (has most of my favorite games)
2. Super Nintendo (has most of the rest of my favorite games)
3. Playstation Portable (mine has poop all over it!)
4. Xbox 360 (it really is amazing guys)
5. Playstation 3 (I am very fond if it even though I never play it)
6. PC (includes Windows and DOS? Good primarily because of its legacy)
7. GBA (a ton of pretty good games even though there weren't any amazing ones)
8. Game Boy (the games really sucked but it was my only option on the road)
9. Sega Genesis (exclusively because Sonic and Phantasy Star are amazing)
10. DS (Because it's the only one left)

NEGATIVE INFINITY: Wii (Because I absolutely never play mine except for when I want to play Gamecube games or games that were scheduled for Gamecube and later switched to Wii and also because the Wiimote gives me wrist cramps and I am pianist so I need to care of them dude)

What's your opinion on "cliched" games?

author=RoseSkye link=topic=906.msg12217#msg12217 date=1208401079
I couldnt even keep playing Wild Arms 3 because of the painful clicheness of it.)

Dude that's about as far from the typical jRPG mold as you can possibly get in terms of setting and characterization (although if you compare it to American cinema in the 60s and 70s you might have a different opinion).

Also, I'm becoming allergic to the word cliche. We need a new word.

I see no problem using RM2k, in fact I think it's a better idea then using VX. On average, I would say most of the people in the RPGmaker community have RM2k. Its easier to get ahold of, its been around longer and its free and most people are too cheap to pay for VX (Me).

Well you can steal RPGMaker VX the same way you stole RPGMaker 2000 you rotten cheater! This is from another another topic where WIP referenced this topic (COSMIC) but:

This site does not condone the use of a pirated copy of RPG Maker 2000, which is pretty much every copy people have. I am very pleased to see that RMXP and RMVX are for actual sale in English. I don't want this place requiring a criminal activity for the "entrance exam".

This.

While VX is probably better in terms of doing a solo or proper project, for a simple community project it is not. (I say simple, I mean DBS and default fuctions).

Well VX is actually much easier to use for simple functions because its menus and battle system are more polished and require fewer resources from the player.

Anyway fine screw you guys :(

Mission-Based RPG

I would love to participate (I would even write some music for it) but since this is in RM2k I refuse to. If you move this to RMVX I would be on the vanguard for the project.

author=Enker link=topic=910.msg12152#msg12152 date=1208357584
Normally I'd jump at the opportunity to mess about with this kind of thing, however the nature of the game design - which is total player choice over characters and their parties - somewhat makes for a less driven narrative than such a concept would require. Especially with so many people potentially participating.

Actually you are wrong. Just because the game is open-ended does not mean you cannot have a strong narrative. In fact, having open-ended gameplay combined with a setting where the nature of reality is not necessarily set in stone has great potential for forward-thinking and postmodern storytelling.

What is steampunk, anyway? A music genre?

Was this a joke because seriously man.

What's your opinion on "cliched" games?

author=harmonic link=topic=906.msg12112#msg12112 date=1208319992
Man that sounded phallic.

Dude you plus phallus is a recipe for what is quite possibly the best night out on the town ever.

that's true and usually if you have enough features/plot twists etc you can draw your game away from the cliche.

I think what a lot of us are arguing is that having a lot of features and plot twists is CLITCH in and of itself. Like Enker said, there really are only a small number of stories that can be told and a smaller number appropriate for video games. Also, there are really only three or four types of video games that you can create (objective-oriented, sandbox, Reflex-oriented, strategy-oriented, etc), not at all of which are suitable for storytelling. All told, you really only have about 15 or so different combinations of story type and gameplay type.

Changing the setting or having A BIG TWIST does not really change the fact that what you are doing has been done before. There is too much focus in the RPG community on CLITCHES. You will notice that fans of RTS or FPS or city-building games rarely complain about whether or not a game is CLITCHED.

[DEAD] Metroid Origins/MTR

I had played a few prototypes of this game and the engine was really cool! Also, the graphics are *not* rips -- they're original tiles drawn painstakingly faithfully. I wondered sometimes if making them look so much like rips was sort of contrary to the point.

To be fair from my knowledge it isn't WIP's fault this project always ran into problems but other team members. If you guys have ever worked on a game with a team before you can imagine what sort of stuff comes up (usually someone who has a critical task delegated to him disappears for no reason).

WIP: You should post a prototype version!
