Oh Ma Gawds, working on hair is the worst pain ever:

Subterranean Starfield

author=Archeia_Nessiah
How is that possible? I made the character sets first, drew the portraits and used the very same colors from the same DS palette @_@

I'm thinking now that Lady Thes...Tres...Tahari's sprite does actually have green hair like her portrait, but with the highlights combined with her crown, it looked like the sprite was blond.

Natalie though, was my first main character, so her dark-haired portrait, light-haired sprite really stuck out. Now that I've had a little more experience to see this isn't common, it's almost cute how her hair doesn't match up.

BTW, I'm sorry about nitpicking it, but this and the waterfall were literally the only flaws I found. Beautiful game overall. :D

I'm also surprised Dragon's Descendant didn't get as much support.

I still haven't played Grumpy Knight. It was a toss-up between Depression, Reaper and SubStar, but then I ran out of time and never voted, so...you guys can each pretend you got an extra vote. :3

Ok, here's what I've come up with now:

If these look ok, I think I'll go ahead and make some finalized sets later. Interesting note, I was going for pale with Mr. Brows on the left and most of that effect was thanks to playing with the contrast between the light and dark.

And, here, it's later now:

Yeah, the pupils are another example of my liking something, subdued pupils, and not really having the experience to pull it off in an elegant way that doesn't just leave them looking flat. You can see in my last example that I've been experimenting with the eyes as well though.

Subterranean Starfield

Ok, I'm getting frazzled trying to sample what I can and give every game a shot before voting closes when this game struts up with a big smug grin and tells me its a dungeon crawler. Yeah, sure, this'll be -totally- unique and enjoyable, I -totally- don't want the concept of grinding to kill itself via volcano-assisted jumping by this point.

Unfortunately, it turns out this is a seriously pretty game that presents itself well and is actually fun to play. The inspiration from Etriann Odyssey is clear, but the game still has its own flavor.

My biggest problem is the inconsistency between some of the portraits and sprites. When everything looks so good, it's that much more grrr-inducing to see hair-color not matching up with the game's most important NPC, let alone the characters. There is also a waterfall tile I noticed at the beginning of the dungeon that looked seriously butt in the middle of everything looking so good; like a spot of yellow on a pristine field of fresh snow.

Seer Dell: Dragon

OMGness, I've been cut-scene jumped into enough inescapable walls I could swear this was the Philadelphia Experiment.

Overall, the game has a charm and great characters that do well enough to bring the funny and draw one into the gameworld. Some of the dialogue around the actual gags and bits could use a little of the old '25th hour' polish though. 'Don't you sweat-drop at me!' was hilarious at any rate.

Also, thank you for giving us characters who actually had lives before the title screen and were statted up accordingly. Over the past week I've played way too many games as some forgettable cypher who does nothing but spam attack against a backdrop of, y'know, plot and/or whatever going on and by the time they start to evolve, my disinterest has reached critical mass. This introduced me to some characters and events I actually want to remember and hopefully you can continue it.

Depression

Hmm, I'm thinking nothing in here was intentionally bad per se. Unlike straight parody, Depression presents the common RPG gameplay elements fairly objectively. He doesn't outright condemn jobs or grind or equipment/level arms races either, he says, 'hey, if you want to climb the tower, go for it.'

On the other hand, I have gotten into some fairly deep ruts before in my personal life and had that depression compounded to severe levels while playing mmorpgs during those times. Seeking escape in a fantasy world where my hard work and goodness are supposedly rewarded and appreciated, but finding nothing but an endless cycle of dissatisfaction is something I can better empathise with than some people.

Here's the results of some experimenting resulting from Caz's advice:

I think I've gone too dark with their outlines now though, lol. Either way, I played around with some expressions you can see here; expressiveness was my main idea behind the face design.

Oh, and thanks for the support Dudesoft.

Och, I haven't even played Grumpy Knight yet and it's like the eleventh hour. So much grinding...

...I still haven't played half these games I've wanted to actually.

Aww, closed already?
