NESFREAK64'S PROFILE

Hi, my name is Steve. I've been lurking here for quite a while. I've tried my hand at RPG making before, starting on the Playstation, and ending last with RPG Maker 2k3. Who knows, maybe I'll try again sometime?

Wild Kings

So, is this still alive? I'm half way through chapter 1, great game so far! Like the sense of humor, I'm surprised you haven't been lambasted for it.

Weird Dreams

Wait, I'm guessing the game size rise was due to the inclusion of the RTP? I'm stupid.

Anyways, similar to psy_wombat's let's try, I made it to the first boss fight...Except that I had grinded my way to level 22, and I still was no match for him. That, and my healing spells healed less then the amount of damage he did.

Anyways, intriguing so far. I like the writing, and the ideas, especially with the way the main character did the change, alongside the way she changes back to her normal self when she enters a house. If/when I finish it, I'll write a proper review...At the moment, I don't feel like grinding to beat the first boss.

Weird Dreams

Not that it matters, really, but how did the game size ballon from 1.1 MBs to 42?

Just wondering. Anyways, going to take the full plunge soon.

Inspiration, and its effects

Well...What can I say?

I'll be honest, I thrive on constructive criticism when it comes to my writing. On the same note, my ex also knew how to push my buttons just the right way to over do it.

With that said...The internet's very much the same way. I'll be honest, I do wish that people knew how to offer more constructive criticism, and try to look for the positives in games, since hey, they're games, and they're something we're supposed to enjoy. When I play a game, or review it, I try to look at it through my eyes, as a gamer, not someone making games, and NOT looking for things copied from other games and what not.

Now I don't see the MAJOR problems with your title screen, nor did I mind Masako in Matsumori Stories (too much, haha), but the title screen...What's the big deal anyways? TBH, all the game's title screens made from RPM2k-RPMVX all look the same to me anyways. It's just one very minor element. I realize that Masako isn't such a small element, but she's also a fairly unique character (especially to the RPG world), which can throw a lot of people off.

Granted, those are beside the point, and just probably some of the things complained about. I think you should give it time, nobody makes a masterpiece their first time.

I feel inclined to disagree and agree at the same time with your assessment of inspiration though. When just writing, it motivates you, and you can go on with it, similar to when it suddenly dries out and you're stuck with a case of writer's block. Game making...Well, that's where I have failed before. Usually that's where all the technical stuff comes in for me, and I completely lose it.

Like I said, that's where time comes in. In my honest opinion, you've done a pretty good job with the two (maybe one and a half with this game?) games I've played, but there's obviously a lot of room for improvement. I'd say keep at it, hell, you could make a masterpiece and people would still complain about it. It's the nature of the internet.

I think, in time, especially with all the practice you're getting now, the more technical sides of game making will cease to be a hindrance, and you'll be getting much better feedback with future projects.

*steps off soapbox*

Just some random tidbits

I think it looks great so far. Granted, it's me, and I'm not big on judging pallets. The candles in the background could use a bit more color, though with the SMBX engine, that might be difficult to change. It fits the ice theme pretty well, though.

Weird Dreams

So I played through what I think is the end of the demo (ends at the signs that say the developer hasn't implemented those areas, right?). Couple things.

A: I like the dialogue. It's got a really kind of snitty quality to it, if that's one way I can put it. Not that there's much to it so far (it's very short!), but it's definitely fun.

B: I actually got killed my first time through, haha. Granted, that was my fault for not using the provided healing spot, or the spells I had, but the enemies remind me of Matsumori Stories, where they'll be STRONG at first and then nearly pitifully easy later. The experience curve is probably fine though. As with Matsumori Stories, I appreciate the way you handle running into battles.

C: I'm actually looking forward to playing this when you're done! Once again, your skills for writing show pretty well, and I can't wait to see where the story goes.

One of theses days/games, I'll get a comment that reads something to the effect of, "New Marrend game!? Subscribed!"

But, clearly, this is neither the day, nor the game.

I actually didn't notice this was one of your's, until after I had read the info on the game. All the more reason to play it, if that helps! I kind of wish RMN had a "subscribe to developer" option, there's a number of people here I'd like to follow.

Weird Dreams

Well...I'll be honest, I can't wait to check this out! Haven't downloaded yet, but from the sounds of things, I'll be wanting to! I like the sound of the concept.

Good luck on the contest!

Crystalis: Sonata of the Far-Away Sky

So I subbed to this, and decided to play through Crystalis again on a whim!

Couple things.

A: Are you going to make certain enemies immune to each sword? They took that out of the infamous GBC version, and even though it gets frustrating to switch swords a lot, it adds a lot to the game.

B: Are you going to expand on certain aspects of the storyline?

C: Are the original hero and/or Mesia going to make an appearance?

D: Are you planning on making some of the graphics based on the NES originals (town people, monsters, stuff like that?) I love the style you've got so far, and I'll admit, I'm just curious, but I do consider Crystalis to have some of the best RPG graphics on the NES.

Anyways, I can't wait to play! Crystalis is definitely one of my favorite ARPGs, and this looks great so far!

Super Doki Doki World Review

Did you like Fiery Fiery Castle's lava gimmick?

I actually really enjoyed the Fiery Fiery Castle level! Though to be honest, it was REALLY easy compared to the bullet hell level before it. At least that's how I found it.

Did you guys consider making a set of platforms during the Mouser fight so you'd have to avoid the lava rising, instead of keeping the lava below the floor level? Either way, I love how it came out, a lot of fun. Just that the level before it (Hop Hop Summit) was much more difficult.

Super Doki Doki World Review

For the record, the Koopas are from Super Mario World, after you complete the special stages, and change the season.

As for how the levels are structured, considering they said it'd be a combination of Super Mario Bros 2, and World, I'd say they succeeded on that level. I'll be honest, I'd love to see some of the gimmicks in the style of Mario Vs the Moon Base, there was some amazing stuff in there!
