Video game genres that will eventually die in the coming years.
Monetary success directly corresponds to whether a genre will 'eventually die'.
If developers and publishers aren't making money making RPGs, they will start making FPS.
P&C/Text Adventures practically stopped existing outside of a very small niche group for like, the last 10 years. It wasn't until things like the new Sam and Max games, the remade Monkey Island games, Machinarium, and the Penny Arcade games were released that we started to see people developing them mainstream again.

To add, there are some new genres cropping up though.
They are mostly showing up in the Competitive Gaming area. Games in the style of DotA, and the Diablo III 'Arena'/Darkspore.

FIGHTERS
Fighters are currently doing well... I mean, there isn't much gameplay innovation outside of Smash Brothers, but the concept is still strong. It's almost the ultimate competitive game. Marvel VS Capcom 3, Street Fighter vs Tekken, Mortal Kombat, Dissidia 012, as well as others are on their way out.
As far as innovation in the field, the most recent is the 'Over the Shoulder' view of fighting in Street Fighter IV 3DS. Which apparently is really nice.
FPS
First Person Shooters have been replaced by Third Person Shooters for single player games. It's a better view, in all honesty. I don't think FPS is really a genre, though. 3rdPS isn't either. They are more of just viewpoints for games. Dead Space is a FPS, but its a Survival Horror. Mass Effect is a 3rdPS but it's an RPG. Fallout 3/NV, as well. The days of Doom and Quake are gone. They live on in the competitive online games like Team Fortress 2 and Modern Warfare 2, which are competitive multiplayer games first and foremost. This is where the FPS Genre is still alive, and its kicking to boot. MW2/Black Ops are some of the best selling games right now.
RPG
Role Playing Games as we, the RM Community, know them are dying. Because our style for the most part is jRPG, and jRPGs are on their way out. They make great casual games, and work excellently on handhelds. The 'Tales of' games, and Dragon Quest are the only home console jRPGs that are worth noting, these days. Although in all honesty, modern jRPGs and wRPGs are not my strong point. Table-top is where I like my RPGs, and they have never been that mainstream. They are arguably at their most mainstream.
Then of course there is the MMORPG, which you can't deny the success of. The only reason they are dying out is everyone is trying to 'Compete' for players with World of Warcraft. Until WoW stops being supported by Blizzard, there is no use 'competing' with it. Simply release your MMORPG, do a good job with it, and you will usually make money because the Genre is BOOMING right now. Arguably the most profitable genre to develop in. Unfortunately it is locked down to companies with a lot of money or resources, due to the demand for servers.
The wRPG is still being explored, but aside from the Table-Top adaptions (NWN, Baldur's Gate, KoToR) I have never found any of them to be particularly amazing, since they all insist upon dialogue options and 'morality' systems. (Yes, I realize this exists in NWN/KoToR, but they aren't why I like those games, in fact, I'd prefer if they weren't there.) Then there are the games like Divinity II, Elder Scrolls, Two Worlds, etc. The 'Free World' single player wRPGs. These games all have a great chance at succeeding, but I don't believe the genre is offering much in the way of innovation these days. Maybe we will see some new stuff in the future, it's still being explored.
ADVENTURE
This is another tricky genre, like FPS. It seems to always be cohorted with another genre. But there are two major ones, Action Adventure, and P&C/Text Adventures.
P&C/Text Adventures are making a small come back with the Indie development scene, but I don't think they have the ability to survive in the gaming market as anything more than a niche genre.
Action Adventures like Legend of Zelda, Darksiders, Bayonetta, God of War, etc. seem to do well, but there needs to be some major rehaul in the genre. Legend of Zelda appears to be pretty much the only game in this genre that uses light-hearted themes and humor, and even there they are segregating it (Wind Waker-style vs. Twilight Princess-style.)
PLATFORMERS
As strong as ever. They work on consoles, PCs, and portables. Kirby is still going strong, the new Donkey Kong Country was successful, Indie titles like ARES Extinction and Splosion Man are breaking into the scene. No worries about this genre dying. 3D Platformers were never amazing. Mario Galaxy explores some new concepts, but Mario Galaxy 2 was a bit of "We can't think of anything else" and leaves a bit to be desired.
TBS
Similar to the jRPG, these are pretty much dying out. Almost being replaced by Tower Defense games, actually. They seem to be the closest game style that is currently active. These have been around since Nintendo and Sega Master System so unless something revolutionary comes out, I don't know how much more can be done here.
RACING
These games are lacking innovation, plain and simple. Even something as small as a fantasy world for a setting could make these worth playing again. Like a steam-punk airship racing game (see the Vanships in the anime Last Exile) could at the very least give us something new to look at.

Two Worlds II is already released. Just the shipments got destroyed by a giant wave... that was most likely caused by Steam, since thats the only place it is currently available.

I had never seen RO2 before. Looks pretty damn good.
I'm currently looking forward to Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Hunted, and Dungeon Siege III (which just got a publisher release date today!)
