Description

This is the second time we've ran the Swap in the Middle with You event. It's a pretty simple premise. You start a game and work on it for two weeks. At the end of that fortnight all the games are pooled and then distributed semi-randomly to each other. Then everyone finishes the games they are given over the two weeks.

Rules
  • Sign up below. Make sure that you're dedicated for the both parts of the event.

  • Games must be new and made only for this event.

  • You may use any RM engine. Sorry, while it is a neat idea in theory to use any engine, most people who sign up might not have experience in those engines, limiting the ability to finish the games. Please point out if you have the legal or non-legal versions of RPG Maker 2000 and 2003! It won't do anyone any good if I hand you a legal version to finish when you only have the non-legal version to work with, after all!

  • If you only have access to a particular RM engine, please note that in the comment section so that I know to account for that when distributing the first half of the games.

  • Also, make sure to include an RTP stand-alone version of the game (and include resources) when passing it over so that your partner is not looking for different files to make it work.

  • When it comes time to submit, for the first half of the game upload the WIP to the event locker (accessed by Submit in the top corner).

  • First halves of games must be in by the time shown under the Details section after you add your time offset in the settings of your account. The Date End reflects this and will be changed when the second halves are handed out.

  • The second halves will be submitable by game page ONLY. Make a game page for your game whenever you like, just remember to update the information when the second creator comes into play.

  • To keep time realistic, aim for each half to have a half-hour of play at the most. This will make an hour-long game, which is pretty decent for a month of work. You can go over this amount, but remember that the longer the game, the less chance there is to finish it.

  • At least 10 minutes of game play time per half!

  • In the spirit of the event, don't be a back-seat driver to the second creators. They can take the game where they like - that's half the fun of the event. In fact, let's just say that you keep your fingers out of the game pie after it gets handed over. Make it something of a surprise, eh?

  • All games must abide by site rules - pared down to 'no hate speech, no highly sexual content, etc'. If you have questions about what is and is not appropriate, PM Liberty and ask.

Achievements?
As always, there's badges to consider~
Started in the Middle with You, Too - 50MS - Received at the end of the event for those who started a game and had it completed.
Ended in the Middle with You, Too - 50MS - Received at the end of the event for those who finished a game.

Creators are allowed to change the content of the first half of the game this time around, in order to make it fit the end half ideas. It's expected so don't be upset if you find your game has changed between sending it off and getting it back! I highly recommend making your first half a fun game that you don't mind morphing into something else, so as to stave off any protective instincts you may have towards the story and ideas.

If it helps people to disassociate themselves a bit from being clingy with their games think of the first half of the event as you making part of a game for someone else - it's not your game, it's theirs. You're just making it for them to mess with. The second half is where you get to make what your get yours.

Remember, we're doing this for fun, guys, and a big part of that is seeing how someone else takes your ideas and makes them into something else. Ideally we'll see games come from this with interesting changes and twists, so don't get attached to the first halves!

I think what they want you to do is include the RTP in the game files so that the person making your game can do so without issue. If your using MV, this won't be an issue if you just zip the game folder.

For Ace create a blank project export a game with all the RTP and copy the files into your game folder.

Yeah, you can jump in on the first part of the event after it's started. Not so the second half, though. Be prepared for both parts.

I guess I can add Sim RPG Maker to the list of allowable, but for future reference, when saying RPG Maker engines that means 2k to MV. At least check that it's okay...

I was working on a parallax map for shits and giggles, randomly decided to use it in my game, and just now realized I can't because I had started it a day or 2 before the current event. Damn. So now I have to rework a little bit and make an even uglier map in a shorter period of time.

I'm curious where my unfortunate victim game dev partner(?) takes my game. I might also keep this around and make my own interpretation of Part 2 after the event.

I personally wouldn't go with parallax though. I'm fairly sure we have more than a few users who don't know how to do it or at least don't feel comfortable enough doing it. Not to mention it's a lot of effort.

This. I have been doing this RPG Maker thing going on two decades and naturally that included a Parallax-mapping-is-the-one-true-way-to-pretty-maps phase and I wouldn't even say that I feel comfortable enough doing it.

I'm using MV, and I currently own VX Ace and MV. I also own game maker studio, but don't know how to use it. XP

But sadly, it is not Makerscore.

Well, you can do things with it that can get you Makerscore.

Wow, that can mean some really different things out of context.

Ok, right now I'm only able to use 2k as all my other Maker's aren't drm free and I don't want to use steam anyway. Not sure I'll even try to whip something together but count me in for playing your games afterwards (and don't be afraid to send me a pm, if you want a little Engrish review of your swapsie).

Or it means exactly how it sounds! RTP is Life, but Makerscore is Existence!
Currently I've finished the title screen and the first of the two battle systems I want to use.

I still need to show the player's airship (but that'll happen automatically when I convert the defualt system to sideview).

Here's where you choose your actions and position them in the order you would like.

Only one action can be performed in each column.

I hope people liked Skies of Arcadia.

Next I need to complete the main battle system for the game, which should be a lot less work.

Feels like way too much stuff is happening at once. Sorry, but, to reduce stress, I'm inclined to bow out.
I think my game's coming along pretty well so far. I've reached the minimum benchmark so I should be safe, but I still need to add more Content.
Thankfully it shouldn't be too hard. It's just a bunch of combat opportunities and scattered events, right?
Nice work, Lavendersiren! 10 minutes has proven quite difficult for me to fill so far, but I think with everything to click you could probably squeeze 10 minutes of interaction from my game so far.

Anyone know why events still play while video is playing in RPG Maker MV?
If I can't figure this out I'm calling this quits over bad engine design.

Because someone might have a half-screen video play and have talking happen over it. IE: Works as intended. You might have to put in some wait commands. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out how long since movies typically have a length to them.

http://sumrndm.site/video-wait/
There tho. It's a plug'n'play script that makes all eventing wait til after a video has finished playing.

I wish Ace let events run in the background while video plays.
