BD_DESIGN'S PROFILE

Just another ex-gaming industry hopeful, going to school and learning as much as I can. I don't think making a game will directly affect my chances of getting a job, but it will teach me the process as well as organization, something I sorely lack. I'm no longer working for Zynga, which is too bad.

What else? I like Japanese food and cinema (but I'm not an otaku), CRPGs (of course), electronic music (90's Industrial FTW), Belgian ales, meat cooked over fire, 420, CGI, 3D animation, cats, SNES, subversive or black comedy, dystopian sci-fi, and any epic fantasy brave enough to step out of the Tolkien shadow.

My dislikes include all forms of bigotry, country music, fast food, factory farms, multinational corporations, warfare, social networking, romantic comedies (in general), and politics.

The Iraq War is officially over.

At least you apologized for Brian Adams. :P

Don't think of this as drawing, it's more like copy/pasting with style.

Yes, data is lost when using a JPEG algorithm. This means things get blurry, as well as the artifacts (the unwanted color changes) Oh, by the way, Early RPG Makers needed PNGs to be 8 bit / indexed, which limited the pallet to 256 "web safe" colors. With XP and VX, there is no such limit.

I've thrown together a little example of how you could improve it; I realize this is to some degree unsolicited, and I'm not trying to step on your creative process, just show you what's possible. I'm certainly not implying you should use the image either, the best thing for you would be to go through the process yourself.

I wasn't sure of the font you used, so I went with something similar, besides I have THOUSANDS of fonts to search through, so I couldn't go through every one of them. I actually got as far as the letter B. XD

As you can see, the two words are now out of alignment. This introduces a dynamic within a static image, meaning that movement is implied in our subconscious minds, even though consciously we're aware that the image itself doesn't move. The chiseled look of the text is nothing but layer effects picked from menus. I actually picked that up from a tutorial on menu design I found through Google. Also, the placement of the title does not interfere with the location where the game menu pops up.

The whole duality thing I think I understand, sort of like the Talisman, by Steven King (and Peter Straub, I think). The two characters would be analogues of each other in parallel worlds. One of the ideas that popped into my head was seeing the two characters together, kind of like if the game was a film and the title screen was a promotional picture (which it is). Poses could be used to separate them, but in a unified manner (like the pose of the above character with the other in the same pose, but standing back to back). Or you could go with the "Advent Children" pose (with Cloud and Sephiroth, side by side), although I think that pose is boring.

You are making great progress. Between the two title screens, you've shown major improvement. Keep up the good work!

Okay here's a few things I notice, and I'm being a little more critical than the others because you are learning, and so this is going to be a learning opportunity for you.

You have artifacts in the image that comes from the JPEG compression. There also seems to be some issues with the transparency around both the character and the text. JPEG is known as a "lossy data compression;" that is, data is actually lost when saving the image. PNG is lossless; the file size may be a bit bigger, but that shouldn't be a concern for you.

The title is large enough, but the flat color is boring. You could give a metallic finish to match the "bronze" in the title. This would make it pop out more. The alignment looks awkward, as if you hit the enter key between words. Separating the text would be the better way to do it. It also looks like it's too low; the selection window shouldn't cover important elements.

Your story focuses on the dual nature of the Main Character. Why not reflect that theme here? It would help in getting rid of some of that empty space on the sides.

You mentioned somewhere else that you use MS Paint. That program needs to die. Download GIMP (it's free) and learn to use it, you'll gain a valuable skill and be better able to realize your artistic vision. Stop shooting yourself in the foot!

The Iraq War is officially over.

I wasn't joking about going up against a Mountie, btw. Those guys are badass.

Now I must go watch Canadian Bacon.

The Iraq War is officially over.

Actually, I would rather not tangle with a Mountie....

The Iraq War is officially over.

As long as there's oil over there, we'll do anything to get it.

You've just been flash fiction'd

I don't understand the suicide one at all. :/

It's kind of a "Who's on First" thing.

Cookbook: Such biting wordplay.

Much better, but JPEGs suck.

zai jian

I wouldn't mind checking out Vietnam.

Sci-Fi Series'

They did that every season. I enjoyed seeing the different actors playing different personalities. Oh, before I forget there were some great miniseries. Taken, Invasion: Earth, Ultraviolet (NOT the movie) and The Prisoner remake. If you haven't seen the original Prisoner, check that out too.

Also, The Invisible Man was another show that ran the same time as First Wave.

AAARRRRGGGH I totally forgot Mystery Science Theater 3000! And Red Dwarf!
