RMNCast: Episode 5

Umm, I didn't like it :(
There was too much pointless blather and stupid jokes and not enough real content. I turned the podcast off around the 45 minute mark because I couldn't bear you guys talking about... nothing.

I listen to a lot of miniature wargaming podcasts and stupid red herrings such as these are the first thing to get axed. I don't listen to podcasts to hear stupid inside jokes, I listen to people with a certain amount of knowledge discussing topics relevant and/or important to the hobby. Kinda like "amateur professionals" exchanging points of view and providing insight into different aspects of game making.

On top of that sometimes some of you sounded like you didn't really feel like taking part in the podcast anymore and would have liked to log off and do something else.

Also - establish the topics to be discussed beforehand, think them through, maybe even rehearse, and make sure that when you're to talk about a certain game, everyone has played it. It helps :)

Sorry for being harsh, but I was dissapointed in this episode. Number 4 was much better.

What I'd like to hear in the next episode(s) is a kind of a news flash. Most important events happening in the community over past few weeks, read by just one person and no comments from others. These thing are very enjoyable.

[DEMO] Demon Tower Demo(n)

I may be wrong, but it seems the game is built around battles, not puzzles.

I don't mind mapping. I think it serves its function.

Release Something! V - Discussion Thread

@Rei - OK, I'll get back to your game after I play all the others.

@Craze - at first I hated DT (Doom Trooper? :D ), because I got virtually obliterated in the first battle. I had no idea what the fuck was going on. All those skills, characters etc. got me confused. Which do I use, which are worthwile, WHY ARE THERE NO PURE NUKES DAMMIT? >:///

Then I went to the forums and read somewhere that you can switch your party members inbattle. Without losing a turn. Now I can't stop playing this damn thing :P

BTW, also saw the ghost ninja girl in the throne room.

Release Something! V - Discussion Thread

OK, I'm gonna play a few games and note down my impressions as I go along. I like this kind of a comment, because it makes it easier to understand what is good and what is wrong with the game, looking at it from the perspective of another person playing your game for the first time.

Anyway, what I'm gonna play:
The Puppet
Alter AILA
Backstage 2
Eeverything Turns Gray
Forever Euphoria
Harbinger of Souls
Demon Towerrrrr

(sorry, don't have time to play each and every release, so I picked the ones which piqued my interest)

Here's the first two games I played.

THE PUPPET
- nice title screen, but annoying music
- exposition time! story sounds promising, but the amount of names thrown at me at once is overwhelming; I doubt I'll remember even one after the intro; it seems there are zombies invading a church state or something like that
- nothing really happens during the following cutscene; I want to play, dammit!
- another cutscene and once again I'm being bombarded with names :(
- watch your grammar! I'm not a native speaker and have already found quite a lot of errors; "Don't be idiot!"
- they're still talking; I think you need to cut down the amount of dialogue and make it more condensed
- another cutscene; the drunkard's ace :D
- anotherrr cutscene
- finally... a battle! I smash enter and win (OK, I also used the only available skill (HP drain) 3 times :D ); at least the ATB bar fills up quickly
- a minute or two later and I can move my avatar around a map! nice ;)
- I pull a lever surrounded by corpses and get attacked; how clever of me :(
- I open up the menu and can't find the option to change the ATB mode to wait; not good
- I'd like a save point, please
- cool arrow trap
- the cave's too dark, I can barely see anything
- I almost get killed by a huge boulder; PROBLEM: once it hits you, it'll keep hitting you until you manage to reach a turn
- I miss a chest due to those stupid boulders >:(
- a save point. Fuck yeah! Too bad you didn't place it BEFORE the boulders...
- nice statue puzzle :)
- OK, got to the spike trap and kinda lost interest; there's just nothing interesting going in this game, and I don't feel like trying to fight my way through this damn trap (protip: it's too hard)
- that's it for now, maybe I'll return to this game later, but probably not

ALTER AILA GENESIS
- this is a REMAKE? remaking an RM game sounds somewhat absurd, but we'll see how it turns out
- awesome graphic novel-like cutscenes, but you know it :)
- hero's walking cycle needs work; make him bump up and down one pixel while moving, because right now he's just so STIFF
- first fight one minute into the game - nice!
- enemies have waaay too much HP for a battle which is pure enterfest, and the ATB bar moves sooo sloooooow; Leon died :(
- dialogues are a perfect example of video game dialogue; at this point I'm unsure if I should consider it a pro or a con
- Scott's exposition is NOT fun; you could make it so that character exchange questions and answers
- climbing the ladders <3
- boss batle is very fun, but the boss has, again, too much HP; the battle just drags, and drags, and drags...
- atmosphere is top notch
- oh God, every piece of equipment available from the start at the store oO; at this prices I'm never gonna decide which ones I need
- traveled to the Entrance, and quit; the battle's are so boring and they take so much time! every battle is basically the same - use basic attacks until you get enough EX and AP to use the stronger ones - and they all work the same! do damage, but with different element; it's not enough; I WILL play this further, but I think I will reduce enemies' HP in the database to 1 or something
- in short the game's fun for about ten minutes and the first 3 battles

Guys, it's not like I have a short attention span, but these games just don't make it easy :(

[DEMO] Phantom Legacy Demo I

Sorry for bumping this topic, but I just wanted to say how awesome this games is.
I finally gave it a go this morning and was more than pleasantly surprised!

Anyway, I'd love to give more in-depth comments about your game, but I just don't feel like typing anything right now :P I promise I'll do it tomorrow, and if I don't, feel free to spam my PM box with death threats ;D

Looking forward to playing the next demo!

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Resident Evil 3, Parasite Eve 2, Dino Crisis 1.

Feel like replaying all those PSX survival horrors. They're still fun, esp. PE 2 (god, I totally forgot how awesome this game is!).

Next: Silent Hill 1. Also want to play Chase the Express, but can't find it anywhere :(

Dragonball Evolution(With Hillarious Trailer)

The old live action DB movie is at least cheesy in a good way, whereas the new one looks like yet another multimillion disaster.

Chrono Trigger DS

It does, and I elaborated on it in my previous post. Did you even read it?

The port itself is perfect. If you haven't played CT, or it was a long time ago and you want to do it again, then it's a perfect opportunity to do so. Just skip bonus areas, because they're completely not worth it and may take away from the experience.

But if you're like me and have beaten CT several times and know the game inside out, and want to play CT DS for the new content alone, then don't bother, because it sucks big time. What's more, those two abominations called Lost Sanctum and Dimensional Vortex made me begin to hate CT as a whole for some reason. Now every time I think of CT I recall these two dungeons, regardless of which version of CT I have in mind.

Chrono Trigger DS

After beating the game I can honestly say I hate this port. Or, to be more specific, the additional content, which is so utterly and absolutely worthless it seems to had been made by an RM noob.

I wasted about 20 hours on this crap. I had beaten CT numerous times in the past and so the normal game was more of a chore (there just isn't enough cutomization in this game to warrant more than one playthrough, unless you want New Game+ endings), but had to get through it to get to the meat of the port. The bonus dungeons.

At this point I guess everyone is familiar with the disaster that is Lost Sanctum, but I have to say Dimensional Vortex wasn't much better. Just shorter and not as frustrating as LS, but still a giant waste of time. The new ending is laughable, the new equipment not really that useful (a bit stronger than the original ultimate items), mostly because all enemies are pathetically weak (mind you, I didn't do any grinding in this game) and weapons with critical OVER 9000! don't matter in a game where you don't use the attack command that often. Bosses are a joke, there's no challenge in the bonus areas, unless you consider scaling that f*****g mountain over and over and over and over again a challenge.

My opinion? If you played the original CT, don't bother with this port, and even if you do, forget about LSsanctum and DVortex.

Thanks to this port, I will never evern again touch CT. And I mean it.

Ruptured Souls - WINNER OF THE RMN HALLOWEEN CONTEST (new blog post!)

OK, played it a week ago, but figured it'd be cool to post a comment on this one.

In short - LOVE this game.

In long - this game's exactly what I expect from RM developers. A movie-like game with a very focused story. Short and intense. Lots of ambience and gore (OK, the latter's not a requirement :). The whole concept of a game based on exploration and virtually NO SYSTEMZ is something I've been having in mind for a long, long time, but never came to realize (because I'm forced to do my own graphics, you know...). Easy to make (don't have to worry about balance, battle graphics and so on), fun to play.

I can honestly say that this game, Backstage and Eldritch are your three best games so far. Scrap the jRPG formula, go with interactive movies. Mage Duel was nice, Between Two Worlds was OK, Iron Gaia I'm not a fan of, but I guess many liked it, but these games don't hold a candle to your splatterpunk projects. Vermincide is something inbetween, but a western-eastern RPG hybrid is not a "genre" I'd look forward to playing. It seems you feel at home in a contemporary hell on earth setting, so why not explore it more? Of the games I mentioned only Backstage got completed. Why? What happened? Why did you start Mage Duel which is, well, a cool game (though I'm worried about its longevity), but very, very uninspired in terms of story, characters and the setting itself.
