game music won't work

Lifted from an old topic:

If it's just midis that aren't playing, chances are it'll be the old SW Synth in the volume control panel on the toolbar. If it's at the bottom of the guage, turn it up.

Your favorite type of thing to raid in RPGs

Not counting battles or cutscenes, my sewer dungeon is about a minute long. Does ending quickly make it a good one? : D

Also, I like pretty much anywhere inhabited. Towns, houses, forts, cornershops... whatever.

The "golden" era of PS1 console RPGs?

Hey, how did I miss this topic? You're definitely not alone, Rei. The PSX would have to be my 'golden' era for RPGs/games too, being that that was when I started to get into videogames (about 8? years old, later than a lot of my friends by the sounds of things). Suikoden II, Breath of Fire IV, Grandia and so on are seriously masterpieces. I really couldn't describe why, other than 'they suit my interests more than modern RPGs'... but I wouldn't put it down to solely nostalgia. Like people said earlier, a lot of modern ones do just seem sort of 'churned out', next to them. But I suppose we should consider that when looking at modern stuff we get the good and the bad, but by and large people are only going to still be talking about the good older stuff. Ten years or so is probably a little soon to be saying this, though.

Even nowadays, in most cases I'd rather pay an ebay price for a PSX RPG than buy a PS3 game for roughly the same price. Also I got the majority of my PSX games from preowned bins for like £5-15, and now they're all really expensive on the internet. I wish I had had more money at the time! (I could emulate, but I like to have a collection, scrappy as it is from getting it all from preowned bins)

Also, I could never really get into the Legaia games. I got moderately far on the first and gave up after a few hours on the second. I can understand personal significance, but to me they did just feel pretty uninspired, as brandon said about the second. (Plus I remembered the boss theme from the second as being AMAZING but had real trouble remembering it, then found and downloaded it years later and thought it was o.k. I'm not sure why I remembered it being so worldshattering...)

Inglourious Basterds.

I am pretty excited about this, only recently actually getting into Tarantino at all... I'm planning to see it very soon! I'm probably going with my friend who's massively into war movies, but by the looks of things, this might be a bit different...

What are you thinking about right now?

Man, general studies is weird, most people I know seemed to get it in a grade or two lower than their average... fun fact: i got full marks on a general studies paper at AS and a C on another, and then at A2 got full marks on the 'C' one and a D on the 'fullmarks' one. as one of my teachers said, i don't think anybody knows what's really going on with GS... (AND I WENT TO PRACTICALLY EVERY LESSON. SOME PEOPLE WHO NEVER WENT TO ONE LESSON GOT AN A) lucky it's worth quite little, I suppose.

er, well, didn't break that guy's stride, i guess! and there isn't really much you can say in a situation like that... : (

edit: oh, wait, you're looking at oxbridge, aren't you? a C in general studies could possibly be a bit annoying... I'm not entirely sure how valuable it is, but I guess every little helps. I wouldn't completely rule out a christmas re-take or something, if you can...

Naming Conventions - Characters, Spells, and More

I normally use real-life names with a tendency towards the outdated/odd (my game/s atm are roughly based on the Victorian period, so my big list of common Victorian names (see below) helps, really), but occasionally for some reason just make up a nonsense name like Asnor or Ritian or something, because it seems to fit...

There's a lot of biblical names here. I think this is possibly more American-wild-west, actually

edit: also, just registered this is about more than just characters. For 'spells', I use latin words for FIRE, LOTSOFFIRE etc. from a similar list of basic latin terms, but as this is technology, put this down to the inventor of the techniques having a dramatic flair.

What are you thinking about right now?

Hey, nice, YM! but what about the all-important general studies/critical thinking???

Also, most unintentionally very heartwarming thing I heard today: "... we've been working out what our grades spell...

... mine spell 'dude'... : )"

Worst game you personally do like.

Suikoden IV
Suikoden Tierkreis
Astonishia Story
The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermilion - Again, not bad but a lot of people had problems with the localisation that, because they'd over-hyped its atrocity so much, I never really saw...
Alundra 2
Devilish for DS - odd 'breakout quest' budget game
Luminous Arc - Don't know about bad, but was very generic/uninteresting

also goddamnit! I didn't really get on with FFII when I tried it a few years ago but ChaosProductions' post has made me want to give it another go, now...

What are you thinking about right now?

Apparently Brickroad's blog is a reported attack site... >.>

Best game you personally don't like.

Hrmm... Valkyrie Profile, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, Atelier Iris. And from what I played, FF3 for the DS.
