Yeah, I realise that might have seemed kinda 'fuck 1984' but definitely not. Brave New World by no means ivalidates it, certainly as a work of fiction. And I guess more third-world dictatorships and the like turned out more like 1984 than Brave New World, just with regards to the 'repression/sedation' thing. I was very much thinking of peaceful UK/America.

Er, sorry. I'm reading Decline and Fall by Evelyn Waugh. I like it so far. Also juuust starting Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut. Even though I haven't read Slaughterhouse 1, 2, 3 or 4 I like the man a lot but never got around to reading any of his novels, I'd only read Palm Sunday. But mostly revision books. It's that time of year. Hurray.

TVTropes has ruined my life.

No. What? No, I'm an idiot. You said it was less about 'what cool tropes can I use for my game'. Don't mind me!

TVTropes has ruined my life.

Yeah, definitely. I'm getting better, though. Only lost about 20 minutes when I clicked on these links.

Hm, you look for tropes to insert into your game? I guess I could understand that, but I'd rather not consciously insert them myself, more just make what I want to make then go and see which criteria it fulfills.

And a Disc 1 Final Dungeon sounds like a pretty good idea. Ending on a cliffhanger or something is fine, but a nice meaty dungeon and boss is a good way to lead to it.

I like Brave New World a lot. I'd have to say, everyone says CAMERAS? IN MY TOWN?? IT IS LIKE WE ARE LIVING IN NINETEEN-EIGHTY FOUR but Brave New World always struck me as far, far more similar to modern-day.

I wouldn't necessarily say it was the difference between communism and democracy, Brave New World is still pretty totalitarian, but with a severely manufacured utopia as opposed to any kind of traditional dystopia. Rather than in 1984, where if you resist you are brainwashed, killed and forgotten, in Brave New World you have no means to resist and revolt because nobody gives a fuck because they're HAPPY. Probably shouldn't talk about Soma the painless wonder holiday drug on a videogame forum for irony's sake but that bit struck a chord with me as well.

There never seemed to be much 'boot smashing into a human face forever' and maintaining the status quo, is the thing, it seemed to have sprung from legitimate altruism which made it kinda scarier. The utopia is worse in some ways, I always remember the line about rather than suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, they're just abolishing the slings and arrows altogether. The annoying thing is there isn't really any decent argument against being happy all the time except for poetic kinds of reasons, (and all art is, of course, banned. Nineteen Eighty-Four had crappy lit. and films, can't actually remember if Brave New World had something like this. I imagine so) and if it ever came to a choice of manufactured happiness all the time and the actual range of human emotion I think more than a few people would be tempted after giving it some thought.

This is probably less-than-articulate, it's 4.30 and I need sleep. Well, there's some discussion, anyway. I do like the book. Orig, I'd be interested to see what you thought when you finish it/it's sunk in, or whatever.

edit: oh, haha, fun fact: Huxley knew George Orwell, I think he was one of his teachers at Eton, and shortly after 1984 was published, Huxley wrote to him basically saying "yeah, nice book. I think my one's the way things are actually gonna go down, but yeah good effort B+" I am prick-ising Huxley here, but yeah.

Let's discuss puzzle design!

Alundra had mind-numbingly difficult puzzles. Jumping in Alundra is terrible :(
There's a jump near the end of the mine, the third dungeon or something, that I couldn't make so many times I assumed it wasn't supported in the game's mechanics and just could NOT find the way forward and ended up putting the game down for years. Maybe the jumping does need work in that game. : (

Mediocre attempts at humour.

I liked them. Hmm, I think Dear George could (don't know if you're still working on it) get a lot funnier if it went on a bit longer. It feels like it's pretty abruptly cut off just when it's hitting its stride. If you're doing it live, it definitely should be longer, at the moment it's about 50/50 buildup and laughs, that's doesn't seem like a good ratio for a comedy song... but the buildup pretty much needs to be that length, yeah. Just my two cents. Haha, don't know if you wanted criticism or if you were just showcasing stuff. Sorry.

"*sniff* beautiful *sob*" made me laugh, as well.

This looks very enjoyable. Hope you manage to get it finished this time around!

Taking a page from FFVI's book.

I did like that part of FFVI a lot. I was originally going to do the Suikoden III way in my game, switching between the three parties from the start until they all meet up later, but decided against it because I didn't really want the lack of an obvious main character, and in the end just made one of them the main and put very short segments as the others early on to give them a little background before you meet them. S3 way isn't the exact same as the FFVI way, but worth a mention.

Like statistic said though, if you're doing this in RM2K3 you're going to have to work around the common inventory. I guess you could use a lot of variables, or just go for suspension of disbelief.

Wait, I can't actually remember, but I think FFVI had a common inventory as well. Ah.

Greetings

Hello. I've used some of your RM2K/3 sprites before (from a thread you made to share them IIRC, not just thieved) and thought they were really good. Welcome!

This was really fun to play through. Had quite a few chuckles. The Real Men room, Nightblade's mansion and Gallery were my personal favorites, probably.

It'd be really cool to have another this sort of project in the future, too. And if there is going to be one, I'll be sure to commit to it!

This, essentially. Also liked the evil topics!
