Notes on the Second Mellynd War [RM2K3 Version] Review

Haha, wow, this one could have gone better. Well, I'll take it on board for the full version. Thanks for retaining some optimism, I suppose!

You speak about the early game a lot. I know this is because it's what the average player will judge it on, but out of interest, (and for when it comes to addressing the criticisms) how far did you actually get? The pacing is definitely sped up after Fenheim, and quite a lot after Chapter 1 (and I promise, from Chapter 3 onwards it isn't exactly slow-moving, heh). If you got significantly further, I was wondering what you thought of the story/pacing past the Fenheim section?

Also, which version were you playing? Was it v.2.0 (title screen will tell you)? If not, you should really check it out. It does cut down the Fenheim section, so with less of the 1 exp battles (might have to change this for the full version, in the end) and less cutscenes - and it even removes a character or two. If you were... whoops. I guess the revisions weren't as significant as I first thought...

Anyway, thanks for the review. Things will definitely take an upturn in the full version.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

I try not to buy DLC. They eventually made the Resistance: Fall of Man DLC free and this has made me foolishly optimistic. I want to see if any more companies follow suit once people have stopped buying the old stuff.

On topic: bought a while ago, haven't played yet, need to finish IV first. Stupid impulse purchase. Haven't really heard good things but like the concept nevertheless. Will at least play the first half, eventually.

They can only fit so much in one game at a time.
Unless we're talking Disgaea 3. IIRC, that actually had some of the DLC characters on the disc already and made you pay just to unlock them. : (

(Other games probably do this but Disgaea 3 is the only one I'm aware of.)

I shall play only one game...

RM2K3's 'Guage' battle system

I was wondering recently about RM2K3's 'gauge' battle system. I've seen it used in a few games, and never really had any problem with it myself. But looking at a review of my game a while back, I see two complaints that I was wondering how much of the community mirrored. The first is that it requires the player to press the button more often - to select each character, before they act. The second is that it makes it more difficult to see who you're selecting. Thinking about it, I've never had the second problem myself, usually just looking at who's flashing, rather than the big floating hand (or arrow etc., I'm assuming that on other system2 sets it's not much better).

I always just use the gauge system without thinking, because with the others, the MP count collided horribly with the timebar - though in retrospect a very unobtrusive system2 set would probably fix this? (In any case, for me personally it pretty much has to be guage or alternative, because traditional displays the monster names and that won't really work for me, a lot of the time favouring very long names that definitely don't fit onscreen/in the database)

Out of interest, what is the general consensus on the gauge system (and the other systems, by comparison)? Is anybody likely to pass on a game because it uses it? Do you use the gauge system? I do really, really prefer the aesthetic of the system to the others, but it's probably best to find out sooner rather than later if it it actually hampers enjoyment significantly for most people or something...

edit: gatdam I cannot spell 'gauge', and I can't seem to edit the title : (

Games released in 2009

Are we supposed to tell you when we release a game, or do you usually just...

Oh, well, can't hurt. Notes on the Second Mellynd War demo, 25th August 2009. : )

Your First Game

'Sage' waaay back in about 2002. I never went back and edited anything. I didn't plan any structure at all, or anything more than the first few characters in the DB, and it went on and on, changing characterisation, boss music and even the hero's face portrait as it went along, as well as slowly growing out of RTP as the game progressed. And at one point I decided it would go Suikoden and shoved a quick castle in there. Goes without saying it was v. bad, but I kind of wish I still had it but that was about 4/5 computer resets ago now. : (

(also: every game I made in the next 4 years from this was not much better)

Raciela

Yeah, this looks really promising! Looking forward to it.

This is the fourth version of this screenshot that I can remember. This had better be the last revision to it!
