Dragon Quest: Swords

Over here in the UK it's a remarkably cheap purchase for an rpg defficient console, much like VIII before it I am a big fan of the translation and voice teams, who work in so many very English jokes (for example the equipment seller greets you with 'Hello my lover' which is a line of some jest over here after Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, among other things). I'm hoping that the game gets a sequel, as for a first try at a new sub-genre of rpg it shows a lot of promise. It would be cool to see multiplay and perhaps class-based skills spread across the three other controllers. Imagine working with a friend who'se using the wii-mote as a wand to cast spells by drawing runes, etc. It has a lot of potential.

I think it's a case of not overloading the player with text - get their attention with something happening, let them have some control asap, and make them want more.

I've found that the most important thing any RPG can do is capture the attention of the player with a plot point within the first 10 minutes of gameplay in order to build up an interest and get the player to invest another 40+ hours in the game. In most games of the genre these moments are quite apparant, FF7's bombing mission throws you straight into the action, and Kingdom Hearts teases you with a tutorial with a surprisingly sinister theme and huge scale boss before even letting you begin. be it action or humor, something has to make a player decide to keep playing, but some games just miss the mark, bogging you down in petty conversation or dull tutorial segmets that take an age to plough through before you get even a whisp of plot or characterisation. Some games epically fail in their most basic function - to interest the player.

So which games have and haven't managed it, and when was the last time that you were so turned off by a game that you've not touched it since?

Dragon Quest: Swords

I've just started playing through 'Dragon Quest: Swords' on the Wii, and so far I'm enjoying the light-hearted approach and decent voice-acting quality that you rarely see outside of the DQ games these days. That said the play does sometimes feel slightly repetative and less thought-out than I had hoped (one town, repeating the same dungeons, etc). Still, it's a fine little adventure - what do other people think of this first forray into new RPG territory?

unequip all metal items (test which ones do and don't work in the entryway) and concentrate on healing powers as well as strong magical attacks/items. Once you reach a certain point Edward will come to your aid and you'll be able to re-equip your gear and pummel him!

Battle-Yak vs the Ghoul Bots

I love the Gameboy-like visual style, and will eagerly look forward to a demo version!

Hey everyone! Sorry that I've been away from the site so long. For those who don't know me, my name is Ben Warren - also known as Enker online. I'm working on my longstanding game SHADOW'S REACH, which is fast becoming a labour of love, but for which I thank everyone who has downloaded a demo of helped to host it here this past year or so. I've been working hard at a new job this past few months and am getting ready to be married, so I haven't had time for anything fun, but now I'm back and will be making a concious effort to keep up to date with this wonderful site. :)

[NSFW] Nudity in Art (redemption)

I work in the art world (as a professional Graphic Designer and Illustrator) and work a lot with schools, occasionally using resource sites for free textures or stock images to add to the designs at hand when I have no time to sample my own. Currently I am based inside a secondary school and am teaching the ideal of copyright on images you have created and the way that the internet has somewhat muddied this idea. I was using Deviantart.com as an example for lessons and lectures, however mid-term the so called 'herts learning grid' which filters materials available on the net for schools, classified deviantart at an 'Adult' site and banned it. This is because of nude sketches and photography found on the site. You can imagine the argument I had to have to get that decision turned around, and it's still ongoing!

I strongly believe that nude work is fine within an artistic context (and believe me there's nothing LESS sexy than sitting with other people and sketching a naked man or woman in the middle of a room) sometimes it is even necessary for teaching art techniques and artistic means. There are a lot of messages to be put across via the image of a naked body, and a certain sensuality is among them. I do however have a problem with people submitting two anime characters rogering eachother with household items and calling it 'art'. That's fetishism, and a different thing to art entirely. The point is that nudity and art have always been connected, from the sculptures of ancient Greece to Renaissance paintings, and should be nothing to be ashamed of.
