[RM2K3] [Hiring] [Paid/royalty share] Seeking a MAPPER

Hello.

Does anyone out there really love making rm2k3 maps and would like to earn some money doing so?

I am contemplating making a commercial game in rm2k3 to sell on Steam. It will be an adaptation of a series of novels I am working on (currently drafting book 3) and will eventually indie publish.

The novels are deliberately written to be like a series-length novelisation of an epic JRPG (which doesn't actually exist as a game): they have an ensemble cast, dark lord villain, airships, elemental jewels and magic, limit breaks, coop attacks, dungeons, chocobos (spelled 'cochobos' for copyright reasons), a fighting tournament, etc. When I write them, I think to myself 'What would happen next if this were a game?' and then I write that.

One of the reasons I started writing them was because I realised that it was just so much work to make an epic rpg as one person, so I decided to write a novelised one instead.

The trouble is, I've realised I would still kinda like to at least try to make them as a game as well...

But I need help. I really suck at mapping, and I don't have enough time or expertise to make everything myself.

Hence, this offer.

This project won't be done quickly, but if it ever makes it to Steam I would be willing to royalty-share with whoever worked with me on it.

Also, I would be willing to pay upfront as well, say around $1-10 per map, depending on the size of the map e.g. $1 for a small 20x15 bedroom which is partly black space, and $10 for a big town with lots of buildings.

I imagine that making the maps would be pretty straightforward. It would involve getting a list of maps from me, reading a section of the novel to see what the setting is like, and then making the maps. This would be using RTP and Mack and Blue chipsets (/any royalty free non copyrighted chipsets) for reasons of budget and legality.

If you want examples of my rpgmaking work, I have a couple of completed games here on RMN, including The Cerebral Symphony, a 9 hour romp where I tried out some ideas, and Clarent Saga: Chronicles, a novel-with-battles I was hired to write the novel for. For examples of my writing, head to http://www.patreon.com/luketarassenko

If you are interested in this job, the novel series to be adapted is called 'Saga of the Jewels' and the first draft goes up here (because it is highly Final Fantasy adjacent, as you can see above): https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13581482/1/Saga-of-the-Jewels

A slightly more recent draft of it and a podcasted audiobook version of it(!) go up here: https://sagaofthejewels.substack.com/

If interested, please reply here or DM me, in both cases with examples of your mapping work and details of your availability.

Thanks! Look forward to hearing from you!

Where do I get that faceset from?

I made it with a Japanese programme called 'FaceMaker' that used to be on the RMN resource list.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not objective. I explained my reasoning as best I could and there are aspects of this game that are legitimately buggy or broken.

I meant 'objective' in a literal sense. Like you write as if your review isn't just one dude's opinion.

Anyway, it's all good. Recently starting to watch your LP for the first time and rereading this review has motivated me to return to this game and revise and upgrade it again......one day! Sometime maybe when I need to take a break from writing novels, looking after my wife who has cancer, looking after my children, and my day job......

I will get those five stars one day!

But what does changing personalities in battle do?

Changes battle background and changes Ivan's stats, strengths, weaknesses and the skills available to him :)

Hey rpgmakeraddict,
I will fix all those bugs for the next update, then let you know when it is out, so you can bump up your review to 4 stars!
Happy Christmas,
Faenon
Awesome! Feel free to mail me then! Happy Christmas!
Hey rpgmakeraddict! I have just put up the download for the definitive version of TCS, which addresses all the little bugs you mentioned. Do you think you could please edit your review to make it four stars now? Hopefully this would mean even more people would play it! Many thanks!
:) Absolutely! Said that and I meant that! Good job!

Thank you!

Re-reading this review years later after a PM from its author.

It's interesting that the previous comment seems to have been posted as if this review is somehow objective.

I think a problem with RMN's review system is that some people review games based on the standards of professional or commercially successful indie games, and some people review them against the standards of hobbyists' games. There's no way of differentiating between those when looking at the star ratings. This adds an extra dimension of relativity to already by nature subjective reviews.

Anyway, I much prefer @rpgmakeraddict's review of this game!

One day I will get/take the spare time and effort to refine, edit, revise and update TCS again, then solicit another review!

Meanwhile, writing continues! patreon.com/luektarassenko patreon.com/faenon

The Lord of the Rings

I remember this from years ago. Time for a replay, methinks.

The Cerebral Symphony

Hi TCS subscribers!

So this week a game dev contacted me about writing the script for their rpg game which is in early access on steam based on something else I wrote, and I've shown them the page for The Cerebral Symphony as an example of my game writing.

I wonder if anyone else who played TCS and enjoyed it would like to leave it a review to pull up my average score? halibabica's slightly mean review, which seemed to judge it against the standards of professional games rather than something made by a hobbyist working one hour a week, dragged it down a bit.

raikenjenova? Zadok?

I've been away from the scene for a while. Which maker will best help me make a game like this?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'll definitely test out the trial versions of VXace and MZ, however at the moment I'm leaning towards official 2k3 since I know 2k3 so well and it gives me an easy route to snes aesthetic + side view battles (sped up with DynRPG) and Easyrpg could be used to play it on multiple systems.

Whichever I go for, I think my biggest headache is going to be getting snes-style non-copyrighted resources. I have used the Charas generator and done minor sprite edits lots in the past, so:

Do VXace / MZ have character generators?

And how easy is it to import 2k3 sprites into VXace?

And please could someone remind me which 2k3 chipsets are non-copyrighted other than the RTP? I know obviously rips aren't. Are mac and blue fair game for everybody?
