Older RPG Maker 2000/2003 games?
I've been away from the scene for a while. Which maker will best help me make a game like this?
Hi folks,
So I've been away from rpgmaker for a while, concentrating in my spare hobby time on writing, but lately I've gotten the itch again.
In my imagination I want to make a game that
1. has a SNES aesthetic (FFVI-y)
2. has 3rd person, side-view battles
3. I could try to sell one day, and so uses default or uncopyrighted resources
4. could be played on many platforms (i.e. PC but also mac, Android etc.)
Footnote 1: I have no talent at spriting or composing and not enough money to pay spriters or composers so I would need to be using default RTP, open source stuff and/or generators.
Footnote 2: I am also not proficient at difficult coding, which is why I use rpgmaker in the first place.
I know that if I ever made this game it would probably never get finished and/or never make any money, but a guy can still dream, and investigate.
My question: Which rpgmaker will most help me to put this kind of game together?
While I've been away a bunch of new ones have appeared--MV, MZ... Heck, when I was still in the scene I never even tried VXace. I'm most proficient in 2k3.
I guess it looks like it would be between sticking with 2k3 or going with VXace?
What do people think?
Thanks in advance for any helpful responses.

What's the closest RMN has ever got to FFVI and Chrono Trigger?
So predictably I've already played almost all of the recs, but thanks for making them all the same. Discovered some gems that I knew of but didn't know how much they matched the criteria I was looking for!
This seems like it doesn't fit my criteria at all? I never had the patience to finish this (i.e. wait around for the big event). It would be awesome if someone did an LP of it. I've found the fanfic it's based on--I'm going to read it sometime to find out what happens!
Yeah so I've got a few hours into Theia before and it doesn't really do it for me. I'm not sure what it is. It might be that it's in translation but the story doesn't really grab me and I find the systems kind of overbearing. I might try it again sometime though--or watch an LP.
We have a winner! Of course I know about Blackmoon Prophecy, and tried out the first one back in the day but never got very far of it, I think because I prefer FFVI to FFIV. But I didn't realise quite how much Blackmoon Prophecy 2 is like FFVI. This is going to keep me busy for a while. Thanks!

The closest one I can think of is Theia: The Crimson Eclipse, it's such a really good game that nails almost every aspect of a great JRPG!

Blackmoon Prophecyand Blackmoon Prophecy II are close to FF4 and FF6, respectively. They've both got everything you listed as criteria.

What's the closest RMN has ever got to FFVI and Chrono Trigger?
Which finished RMN games are most similar to Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger?
In my life I find myself just wanting to play those games over and over again. What's the closest we've ever got to these in the RMN scene?
By 'like these games' I mean:
-Complete
-Story/narrative led, with great dialogue (i.e. not the DQ approach)
-Strong characters and an ensemble cast
-A fantasy or steampunk setting, or at least starting in one
-SNES aesthetic
The closest I remember getting to this were The Way and Forever's End (though the latter not complete).
What else would people recommend?

I know Nico is pretty much only on YT and Twitch now, but I wonder if he has any more of this game stashed away some place...
Or if he will ever get around to finishing this one which is much more interesting than his videos of playing other people's games!
A BLURRED LINE v2.1
The Cerebral Symphony Review
Ok, well fair enough.
Thanks Halibabica.
You know what happened with this game? I started it when I was 15 and worked really hard on the first two chapters.
Then I went to college, got married, got a job, started having kids, and the challenge became just to finish the game at all--that was my goal, rather than for it to all hold together in a super serious way!
You know what I learned? Making a game is a LOT of work. It's really hard for one person. All the old school 2d rpgs I/we love, they had huge production teams behind them for a reason.
So fair enough.
No comment on the character creation system?
I'm glad you enjoyed some of the characters and the character interactions though. Writing is really my strong point. That's why since I finished TCS I'm just focusing on my writing. (Check out my Twitter, or my patreon.com/luketarassenko , or the latest TCS blog!)

Hali's Review Thread (Request Your Game!)
Woohoo! All of a sudden I can watch all the videos! Not sure what happened... Maybe you changed something, or maybe it's because I'm on holiday and it's a router-level filter at home used to protect my daughter etc. that was messing things up! I've got a lot of catching up to do. Thanks so much for doing this, Hali!
