That isn't the actual intro, by the way. This game features numerous scenes from the games adopted into the storyline of this one for nostalgia's sake. The original never had anything like this at all, especially since I was less familiar with FF7 back then.
The simularities with the intro and FF7's intro is not only because of nostalgia; the demo of Final Fantasy VIII was of their exam/ mercenary mission (I used the music intentionally here) and if I'm not mistaken the demo of Final Fantasy VII was the Reactor mission, too.

You can patent gameplay processes. Square have a patent for ATB, for example.
Oh dang. ATB is one of my favourite types of battle system...-.-
Copying existing systems is basically what I rely on because not only can't I code, I also have difficulty coming up with something new.
