Ok, so What the Heck is #shump?

Wow, looking at this thread makes me realize just how long I've been around here. I was active when the shmup members were around and posting frequently. An extreme noob in all forms of the field, but active and gam-mak'ing nevertheless.

I kind of miss that activity? IDK it feels like RMN's slowed down content and discussion wise since shmup times. I certainly don't miss the drama (though Heir of King was an amusing moment) but I guess I get what tardis is saying about pushing for improvement artistically? I'm kinda trying to get more active in the critique side of things to actually get that kind of thing started but yeah. Older RMN's activity + critique cycle and current RMN's functionality and events would be incredible, but most people aren't all that vocal, especially in comparison to that time. I feel like the number of very vocal, active creators has dramatically decreased.

I kinda miss IRC, too, but the last time I ventured in there, there was whirlygigs and tumbleweed.

Game creators

Some creators entirely vanish. Game dev isn't an eternally thing for everyone, yo. As a result, taking down those games creates lost-forevers. There's no way to tell at a glance if a game is good or bad from its page, especially if it's pre-page CSS, and some people will want to return to play it.

I know some games are buggy/dead, but if a person leaves the field they are, in fact, NOT obligated to tend to the game. Nor is it the job of this site, or other creators. If an old game isn't working for you and you can't get in contact, move on.

You gonna email the creators of the Atari version of E.T? No, didn't think so.

Revive the Dead

Chibi characters are okay in pixel games, I can live with them even when it doesn't fit the tone, I understand that it's hard to create realistically-proportioned pixel art without making it impossible to tell what's going on. But if you take a chibi character and chibify that, you create a chibularity. Your game had better be nothing but cuteness the entire time to justify it.

I played (and reviewed) the original Cosplay Crisis, and it was about an epidemic virus that changes the nature of reality on a global scale to make people turn into schizophrenic emo mercs. I'm not sure how the chibi-chibi style fits into that.

I'm laughin' (because this is the aspect I'm aiming to recapture, just in a much more condensed form)

They're generator based place-holders. Even if I hadn't started late, a month isn't enough time to make a template and a bunch of characters for it. Not to mention the fact I'm out of commission in terms of art/pixels/animation for a little while yet ;w;

I didn't want to use them either, but I also didn't want to use XP sprites.

The Screenshot Topic Returns

thinking i should reduce the size of the lights. It is supposed to be dark though (I'm building off of the 'original' plot content, which had a horror vibe)

Revive the Dead

I didn't post a before and after, did I?

here we go:

Revive the Dead

I'm gonna give it my best attempt, but it's going to be lacking a good deal of 'nice' graphics-- drawing arm is out of commission for at least another week and a half ;w;

What are you thinking about right now?

*reads thread*

idk man i've been saying this a lot since i realized im asexual but sexual people confuse me

The autoshadows are also weird. Either kill them entirely with a script (i recommend this) or make sure they're drawn to match the way the cliffs would cast shadows.

I assume you still want feedback, so...
I can't entirely remember what the VX dungeon tileset pieces were like, but this map lacks visual interest. The halls are pretty same-y and there's nothing particularly dynamic about the layout. I think the tileset does contain some fallen rocks/debris, and you could add sections with water/growth(like the wall vines)to give the area some variety.

Pumpkin Stats Latte

There are two Starbucks on Swanston street as well, Libby, and the one closer to Melbourne Central seems to be doing pretty well.

Nothing can beat the Rialto Tower's coffee, though. Nothing.
