[Revive the Dead] Game Discussion

The complete lack of Final Fantasy references was unexpected. I was confused that the guy I met didn't mimic Barret's dialogue from the Mako Reactor.

There are Final Fantasy references, they are just very minor to the point you kind of have to squint a little.

Kumo's starting magic (Ice and Bolt) is the same as Cloud's initial materia, and has the same skill names
Kumo's name has been kept intact, and thus still translates (roughly) to Cloud Strife
Levi's new last name is a bit more complex to follow etymology-wise, but Renos is one of the Latin names for the river Rhine, which is one of the major rivers running through France. Another is the Loire.

I'm deliberately keeping them subtle. I don't want it to be too entirely obvious because this isn't a fangame anymore ^^;

(battles do need an overhaul)

after my traumatizing experience with the insanely long cosplay crisis i have decided to never ever play another ff fan game again
…What about Final Fantasy Blackmoon Prophecy or Final Fantasy Discovery? Besides, Cosplay Crisis wasn’t that long of a game…

...Anyways, review is up and pending!

(Hopefully you won’t kill me.)

will I have a reason to kill you, Addit? Hmmm?

ReCrisis

Hi, I wanted to review this (extremely strong start) but I couldn't get more than ten mins in before I reached a point where I kept dying and couldn't do anything about it.

It was at the point where you have to turn you torch off to sneak through, but when it was off I couldn't see anything and the monsters kept catching me and killing me anyway.

Did I miss something? I'd really like to keep playing.

Honestly bad game design on my part. I kinda didn't consider that some people's screens may be darker/the enemies too hard to make out.

Depending on your level they ARE killable (Libby killed all three) and depending on your route through the room you can avoid all the fights...

It's definitely something I'll be fixing up, though. I don't think that room really worked.

...There's a New Game Plus in this demo?

...There's a New Game Plus in my demo????!?!?

while i realize this is due to a mis-communication error new game + in this game is knowing about the last battle and how it comes about

fucking water cooler

What is the biggest RM game?

final tear 3

ReCrisis

Good thing this isn't an FF fangame nor an insanely long traumatizing experience then, huh?

Revive the Dead Feedback

Did you download the new version? I didn't catch that bug til the last minute but I removed it in the RTP independant version. Sorry about that!

And yeah the selection cursor isn't ideal. The HUD is designed for animated battlers so there's a bit of incongruity with the temporary front view system.

I haven't played REevolution (and I can't, either. The download link is gone. Aw...). Will I have needed to to understand the story? Or will it be like Metal Gear Solid 3 where it makes many references to the other games that a newcomer will be thoroughly lost?

ReEvolution references ReCrisis/Cosplay Crisis, not the other way around :)(and not majorly because I was trying to be discrete about its sequel status). ReEvolution is the sequel and takes place roughly 100 years after ReCrisis. You don't need to play anything to play ReCrisis.

[Revive the Dead] Game Discussion

ReCrisis is independent of the other titles. Its existence writes out Cosplay Crisis and makes Crisis/Evolution the true canon.

I really need to play some of these games but I'm pretty sure I can't run 2k3 titles. I'm also working on copious other things at the same time ;w;

I tried fixing this, actually, and I got a bug relating to how the gold window is drawn within one of my non-default scripts. (I guess somebody hardcoded the number-symbol drawing order? :V) It wasn't major enough for me to spend time trying to get a currency indicator working when I could be focusing on bugtesting/other things, so yeah.

Please fix the ATB.

Those are valid points. And I didn't ask you to be sorry for having a personal opinion. I called you out on rushing through and not playing the game properly.

I will probably add a skip cutscene function for later in the game or through repeated runs but at this point? You can save literally anywhere, the demo's main boss has less than 12 words before you engage it, and your determination to skip through the game's plot meant that you died. Twice. Or more.

I do need to add reminders to save that are more explicit than 'this door makes me nervous', I will admit that. However--

the game thinks the story is so important that you should listen to it

Yeah it does. The story is important. Because its a story focused game. I'm not making a Call of Duty title, here. I'm making an RPG. I'm making an episodic RPG that is extremely character focused. The plot is the driving force of this game.

I don't know what you expected opening the first episode of an RPG game but I'm pretty sure world establishment/character relationships/tutorials are a given?

This game has about as much dialogue as the first Reactor bombing mission of Final Fantasy VII. Or the opening sequence of any story-focused game, really.

I'd take your complaint on-board if large cutscenes weren't something I've kept explicitly in mind during the development of this, that I've ruthlessly cut anything that doesn't contribute to the characterization or world building or future plot. I'd take your complaint on-board if I didn't just watch you literally speed-run a game on your first attempt of it. I'd take that critique on-board if it was valid to the genre and you played the game legitimately.

As far as I can see you played the game for the sake of Revive the Dead and not out of any sort of interest, which is fine, but it means I have no reason to consider the complaint about the dialogue legitimate when the game is twenty minutes with it.

And it also means I don't get any sort of feedback when it comes to the actual writing or delivery of the plot, because you had no intention of paying it any mind in the first place.

You are not in anyway obligated to play my game. But if you're going to provide critique like this, give me something to work with as a developer. Please.
