It makes sense. They haven't made a fun game in ~15 years, so might as well go back to what worked for them.

This seems pretty cutesy, for 60$ it's not really terrible either, although I doubt that I'd drop that much on it personally. I'm definitely on board with Hexatona in that it'd be interesting to see an official retron type thing come from either Sega or Nintendo in the future. Having an expandable games list would be neat as well, but being a plug-n-play console it seems pretty out of the question.
I'm just imagining sitting it on top of a normal NES. The NES pyramid.

Add an autotile (dirt, long grass, pebbles) to break up the grass and add a bit of jumble to the periphery (where pathing isn't an issue) and you should be fine.
Yeah, there's a considerable difference between negative space and nothing. It doesn't need to just be a flat grass tile if you use colours and objects appropriately.
