Best of Blogs #021

My personal is to make sure that every single Songs from Aelsea blog gets on this list.

Hard mode: every blog gets the writing spotlight/achievement.

Please, Stop Writing Happy Endings

This is an absolutely excellent article.

It's easy to invent excuses (“it's just a story!” “it's just a game!”) to escape responsibility so that we can happily write whatever kinds of stories we want

I have to say, I'm pretty sick of hearing these excuses as well. Whenever I sit down to work on whatever concepts I'm putting together, I always ask myself what I want to convey through every aspect of the game as a whole. It wasn't too long ago that I would have happily made something that was "just a story", but... There's a million pieces out there that are just that. I can't find any enjoyment or fulfillment in creating something that doesn't have any meaning anymore, because I started believing that it was both pointless and irresponsible to use art like that.

Glad to see that I'm not alone on the issue.

Though, if I may suggest a small incentive in the form of bonus MS if the blogs make the cut? If anything, the one thing that motivates us is moar mak-score. XD

Yeah, it would be cool to have one that went along with the whole "I choose you, _____!" line of achievements.

RMN Snews - Issue #24

NTC
TVTropes and YouTube are way more important here on the whole.

This reminds me: Whatever happened to that RMN initiative to make TVTropes media pages for our more popular titles? That was a pretty rad idea.

RMN Snews - Issue #23

RMN Snews, wow, that takes me back. Glad to hear that the server fund is still doing well.

Questions:

1. What is your personal TODO list? (projects, initiatives, even personal life stuff like 'get a job' or 'finish school' or 'get fit' if you want to share that)

The list is so very long. I cannot turn off my brain so there is always an endless list of things to do, but for the immediate future its "Improve 2D Art Skills, Learn Animation, Improve 3D Art Skills, Start up my company, and finish Gam Mak College".

2. How many other RM or dev communities are you active in?

None. This the only RM community I give two fucks about.

3. What is your current role at RMN?

Being a disagreeable fuck up that barely contributes anything but complains about everything. My role is to be the voice nobody wants to hear but has to because kentona allowed me back on the site.

4. Are you satisfied with your current participation on RMN?

Yeah I guess. I wish I had some more finished/ongoing interesting projects or something, or could get involved with more events since a lot don't suit me. I've been trying to get in on whatever I can though.

5. Do you feel you are empowered to accomplish what you want to accomplish?

Yes. I reached peace with myself over my own skillset and now I practice pretty free of self doubt or unrealistic expectation. It's pretty good.

6. What are you expecting from me?

Well, more Snews now that this has happened.

7. What aspects of RMN are you disatisfied with or concerned about?(functionality, trends, certain members, leadership, etc...)

Nothing really. RMN is the best it's ever been. No shmup, no NicoB... It's like a paradise compared to what it used to be.

8. If you were running RMN, what would you do? Who would you recruit to help you?

I would probably ban rips and run the site into the ground as fast as possible because holy shit I am bad at wielding power.

9. How long do you think you will be with RMN (in any capacity)?

Until it goes under most likely (although tbh if I had the capability when that was about to happen I'd probably buy it out or something. Idk. But there's no reason to not continue using RMN to advertise any future "true indie" stuff I'm involved in, because it takes 5 minutes to make a game page and it's fucking free advertising and discussion space. I'd have to be a moron to abandon it.

10. Is there anything you wish to say?

Forever's End is shit

RMN FEBRUARY 2015: Misaomblr and Bacon Jam

Wow, thanks for featuring me in the artist spotlight. Wasn't expecting it.

It's cool that there's going to be a monthly podcast now, hopefully you guys can keep up with it. I would definitely like to see some more quest appearances, but outside of the obvious suggestion of Kentona that you've already made I don't know who to recommend.

Dark Souls Changed the Way I Think About Video Games

But sure, from this point, if the process of discovery and satiating curiosity isn't something that appeals or piques your interests, then fair enough.

Those things definitely pique my interest, it's just that to me-an extremely visual person (and no, I don't mean "ultra hi-def real is brown" shit) the world itself seemed nothing more than a generic fantasy cut and paste, so I felt no desire to see what it had to offer. You know what I'm saying? It's like with the Elder Scrolls games- they may seem like a generic fantasy thing to begin with, but you can tell there's something "off" about it, so it's more interesting. Perhaps Dark Souls does that, I don't know because I never played it at length and I never saw any hint of it in videos of the game.

If you disagree with the idea that it brings something new to the medium, then would you mind getting specific about the points I made up there that prove so?

I'm not gonna go trawling through the article to find and quote the exact points, but basically just that you said that the series pushed an entire medium slightly into uncharted ground- but there are plenty of games that either partly or wholly tell their stories through player discovery. There are plenty of games with vicious enemies that cant be reasoned with or understood.

One good example of the former is Oblivion. The quest pits you against Merhunes Dagon, the cult of the Mythic Dawn, and the hordes of Oblivion, but there are plenty of details that the quest line and dialogue itself don't mention about those things. It's up to the player to decide if they want to fully know what they're dealing with, or just play the role of an unassuming hero.

I'm not really gonna go into it to heavily because honestly I'm tired of talking about it, we just disagree and that's that. I'm not putting any stock into it.

The one thing that I agree with you about is that cutscenes and player involvement in what would be called a "cutscene" need to be rethought in games, and if Dark Souls does that well then good on it.

Dark Souls Changed the Way I Think About Video Games

I disagree because even after reading the article I just couldn't see it that way that EE did. Also I don't think I need to be called cowardly AND stupid just because I made a jokey post about the topic.

I did play a bit of Dark Souls, and I wasn't enthralled. The game has a high entry level of difficulty and pretty much does nothing to assure me that sticking with it would be worth my time. The material I was presented with was uninteresting.

To me, saying something like the above quoted
I believe that Dark Souls has made some contribution in bringing video games towards something more than what they’ve been doing in the last couple decades.

requires incredible amounts of support. Because you're stacking the game up with the innovators of the last few decades, and saying that it brought more to the entire medium than those games did.

So like, you're saying that this game was on (or above) the likes of Half-Life, Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario 64, etc. If you really think that it was a game changer then you're free to think that, but I disagree.

Basically my point is that I don't see it as having introduced really anything at all to the medium. I see it as a standard fare action-adventure series with the difficulty stuck on impossible.
